Honestly, I've only seen the highlight clips from the Alabama game, but is he really deserving of all the press and the hype? I've been seeing a ton of press on him throughout the summer (and most recently about him skipping out on the Manning camp)

I really think the hype started with the Alabama game, and I felt that he just caught Bama flat-footed after an emotionally draining game against LSU the week before.

Can any of our analysts comment on this?

good college athlete......makes plays with his athletecism......would get destroyed at the next level......

You asked two different questions in your post so I will answer them both separately.

First question: "Is Johnny Football really THAT Good?"

Answer: Yes he is really THAT good. 3706 passing yards with a 68% completion percentage and 26 TD's vs 9 Int's are really good stats for any collegiate passer over 13 games. Then add in the 1410 yards rushing (7 yard average) with another 21 TD's and it amounts to 5116 total yards and 47 TD's. Did I mention that he did this while playing in the SEC? (rhetorical).

Second question: "Is he deserving of all of the press and they hype?"

Answer: IMO, he must be deserving of the press and the hype as he earned it with his play last year. If he had not played well, there would be no press or hype. He is a dynamic player who won an unprecedented Heisman Trophy as a RS Freshman.

He's good but I definitely don't think he warrented the honor of being the first ever Frosh to win a Heisman... I think he was the product of three things:

1. It was a weak year for skill position players at the traditional powers.

2. He had a good first half against Alabama, as his team held on to beat them in a classic trap-game post LSU hangover.

3. ESPN, and really, the media in general, has been trying very hard to prematurely push young players in order to be the first to get on the next big thing. I really think it started with Lebron James, when they crowned him before he proved anything...

I personally think Johnny Football is going to be a train-wreck this season. Other than the first half of the Alabama game and the Oklahoma game, Johnny wasn't that good against GOOD teams. His performances against Florida and LSU are less than forgettable. You'll see him put up some big numbers this year against more chump teams thoug:

Rice, Sam Houston State, SMU, Arkansas, Ole Miss, Auburn, UTEP, Mizzou

Other than LSU and Alabama, TAMU's schedule is a joke...

I thought he was a lot of hype until I watched him dismantle Oklahoma in the Cotton Bowl. I kept watching and thinking... this kid is doing everything that Golson should be able to do, but has a confidence that is unmatched.

Do I think is physical gifts are that good.. yes

Do I know if he can handle the spotlight.. No, even a more emphatic heck no

Feels like a Michael Vick to me, extremely talented but likely to implode on himself

NFL teams are going to be worried about his commitment to football. Mallett got buried in the draft for far less radical behavior.

Michael Vick is a physical freak.... Johnny doesn't have 1/2 the talent of Vick. Hey may be smarter. Vick had a 20 out of 50 on the wonderlic.

Vick: 73 inches tall, 4.33 40yd dash at nfl combine, 38' vertical, throws a football equivalent to 98mphs with a baseball

Johnny isn't sniffing any of those physical stats, except maybe height.

Ha, four good teams and the rest horrible last year.

Sam Houston State Bearkats...

....with a 'K'.

You pointed out the fact that he did these against the SEC...

first off, the GOOD teams int he SEC, Florida, and LSU, he **** the bed...and caught Alabama on a hangover after the LSU game

The other SEC games? Auburn, Arky, and Mizzou are horrible, Miss St. and Ole Miss were just as bad as Mizzou, and he padded those stats with cupcakes like SMU, SC State, LA Tech (while somewhat good, had a horrible defense) and Sam Houston St.

His strength is he can see deep down the field even while scrambling and he is incredibly accurate. He is Golson with Tommy's ability to read defenses and see past the first two progressions. He's also 6'2"

Also, in all fairness his offensive line shoved Bama around like Bama did us in the NCG. His offensive line knocked out 9 defensive starters against Florida last year and Florida still beat them. I think if Florida had played A&M later they would've gotten beaten really bad by A&M. A&M lost a few starters on the o-line so he may be running for his life this season

Vick screwed up his life pretty good with dogfighting.

This is my point. Some talented guys, Vick, Hernandez, can not handle the fame because it lets them afford to induldge in their bad habits, accuses bad behavior etc.

Johnny after winning the Heisman seems to have continued some bad habits, that almost got him suspended at A&M before last season.

If this continues whatever is talent level he will destroy himself and become a sideshow freak

By the way Manziel is more accurate then Vick will ever be.

Johnny Douchebag

He plays Bama early and LSU late. He's going home in a body bag.

Been saying that the whole time in defense for Manti to win the heisman. His stats were alright but he racked up against some BRUTAL teams. I think the worst team we played is still better than 4 or 5 of those teams. Horrendous schedule and it gets overlooked cause they're in the sec. LSU, Alabama and Florida were the only really tough teams he played. He did nothing against Florida and played terrible against LSU.

Tough crowd.

Correct, I did point out the fact that he played in the SEC. I agree that not all the teams he played were great SEC teams, however he did play in the toughest conference in college football and succeeded.

While the schedule he played was not as tough as others, he was an elite QB last year hands down. To argue otherwise is irresponsible.

Not sure if you all consider Oklahoma to be a good team, but 516 total yards and 4 TDs is pretty noteworthy.

Not sure how many other RS freshman QB's had a year like that regardless of what schedule was played? Didn't he set an SEC record last year for total yards?

I agree I do not project him to amount to much in the NFL, but he is one good college QB and deserves the press as the original question was asked.

Not really...His completion percentage is a product of the system more so than his actual abilities...

That's the other thing about Johnny Football and his Heisman that pisses me off. HE'S A SYSTEM QUARTERBACK! People scoffed at Case Keenum's numbers at Houston, "because it's the system." It's the air raid offense, tons and tons of open receivers because you have 5 guys running every which way on every down...

He plays Bama early and LSU late. He's going home in a body douchebag.

Fixed it for you
