Reading on some sites that ND is in good position with this kid. 247 has him as going to ND. In their crystal ball predictions. Hope they're right. This kid has the potential to come in and be a beast. Could be as good as GT. Kid is crazy good. Some say that he'd be a very good WR. But a lot say that he can be an ELITE corner..

Someone brought up a really good point on Mike Frank's show a few weeks ago about Cali kids.

Is it even worth the effort we put into recruiting that state? Think about the hilarious number of 4 and 5 star Cali kids over the past decade who have either bombed, transferred, been kicked out, bailed before (or after) signing day or failed to qualify academically from Cali under Charlie and now Kelly.

Jimmy had an OK career here, Lambert had exactly one big game at CB, Dever was a serviceable starter on the OL, Niklas seems poised for big things and that's...it for the past 10 years or so?

Don't judge a book by it cover. Recruit everywhere. I do think some state have kid that have more limited upside because they are max'ed due to heavy training in highschool vs school from other areas - think Texas.

Fauria transfered but made it to the NFL.

Jimmy was great at ND. Every time he came in late in his career he was a threat to score even without the strongest line.

I'd say cierre wood had a good career and George Atkinson may do more yet. But other than that it's shocking to look through the classes and see who did what. Maybe terrail lambert and for one season Anthony vernaglia started. Otherwise you have to go back to 2002 where there were 3 guys who were worth the effort: Rhema McKnight, Derek Landri, and Chris Frome.

And for all the talk of how well we recruit California, most seasons under weis only garnered 1 pull out of there; however, how many big name guys over all didnt live up to expectations or ended up transferring under cw?

Lets not forget - this period also coincided with the pinnacle of USCs football program.

I forgot about Cierre. He had an OK career, but he sure sorta finished his career with a thud. He was an talented guy, but it seemed like he was sort of a head case.

I should also point out that Quick is from Fresno, so he would have a lot to make up for after what his fellow Fresnoans (?) put the program through recently, lol. Something in the water there.

Quick! Can anyone give us a name and a link? 8-)

Let me Google that for you. Never mind, I trust your able fingers.

I heard the same thing on PH and it was a compelling argument. The list of examples went on and on. Even half the guys you all are mentioning had bun marginal success (can't believe people ever mention Lambert anymore). I guess we need to ask: if we get a good career out of, say, one quarter of our CA recruits, is it worth the effort? Tough one to answer.

I think the counter-arguments to the "why bother recruiting CA" theory (which is very compelling, by the way) is as follows:

1. Are you willing to miss on a superstar to avoid the duds? For example, do you negate having ANY chance at a Jimmy Clausen just because Shaq Evans, EV, Dayne Crist, etc. have flamed out?

2. Don't underestimate the impact getting those major players have had on subsequent recruiting classes. For example, Dayne Crist pledged Irish relatively early in his recruitment process. A lot of skill guys (Floyd, Jonas Gray) from that class pledged after, and playing alongside Crist may have had an impact on them. While Crist flamed out, I was glad we had those two guys in past seasons, so are you willing to lose a potential edge in recruiting by ignoring Cali and the highly rated guys who come out of that state?

3. Just way too much talent to skip the state all together. ND has some duds in recent years, but that's why you balance out your class.

Still, it's a really good argument to make at the moment. Lots of CA guys lately who haven't played up to their potential.

Konrad Reuland is in the league but flamed out at ND for some reason. Head scratcher for me since I think he was the #1 rated tight end in the country out of HS.

Found this about Rueland. What I cannot remember is whether or not Rueland was injured at some point, leading to his lack of playing time.

It’s likely that Reuland wasn’t happy at least in part because the former five star recruit was passed on the depth chart by fellow classmate Will Yeatman in the summer and then by freshman Mike Ragone more recently. Reuland was sitting 4th on the depth chart with five star prospect Kyle Rudolph and four star Joseph Fauria already verbally committed to Notre Dame for next year.

What an amazing abundance of talent at one position. Besides Rudolph, transfers Reuland, Yeatman, Fauria all are in the NFL (at least for now).

Using that logic you'd probably have to give up recruiting every state because you're gonna have more OK guys then studs. Heck, should we stay out of florida after sam young being underwhelming, lynch, ferguson, prestwood, rabasa, jackson, allen, and boyd.

So I wouldn't black flag any state or region

I am with you. ND recruits nationwide. So much to offer and so much to gain. Win and they will come.
