I'm sure you have all seen this. There is no way Farley keeps Redfield off the field. #10 will go down as the best/ most athletic safety in ND history. Sorry Mr. Smith, Zbikowski and Walton. Thoughts..?

I just do not recall a freshman safety starting from the get go. Russell last year though at corner showed BK will start freshman in the defensive backfield.

Shumate and Farley have been in the program for awhile now and are no athletic slouches. I think they have a big advantage in terms of knowledge of the defense, especially Farley who has the advantage of starting a year and learning from Motta. Still, I have seen a number of people predict Redfield will be starting before the end of the season.

I do not want to create unrealistic expectations for Redfield. Guys like Harrison Smith and Gerome Sapp were highly rated and took awhile to get their reads down. Sapp was voted by sportswriters as the most likely freshman to start. He did not start for three years I believe. It might be the same with Redfield.

Oh, his athleticism is very good but I feel like a plug for a safety who is rarely mentioned whose athleticism was dynamic I thought. That is Sergio Brown. I thought he would be a force early on but it took awhile.

It is amazing how we have seemingly written off Barrati, Collinsworth and Badger from the starting discussion. We have depth. I can see any of them playing. Especially since eye popping athleticism is great at safety but instincts are a huge part of the equation. I think that takes a little time.

My thoughts?

Jeff Burris might disagree. So might Pat Terrell, Dave Duerson, and a number of corners who started as safety, like Bobby Taylor, Tom Carter, and Todd Lyght. Paul Hornung might also disagree.

Having said that, I love the fact that Redfield is coming in, but I want to wait before I annoint him "the best/ most athletic safety in ND history."

I think he is Bobby Taylor-esque

Thank you BlackIrish.... I was about to post the same. Obviously TexasDomer's statement "will go down as the best" is more a reflection of hope and opinion.

Ooops! Something went wrong with the "Quote" function. The "will go down as the best" was the initial poster's hope and opinion. My personal opinion is the language that you put in bold.

And as for BlackIrish's thoughts that Refield is "Bobby Taylor-esque," I would ***love it*** if he turns out to be similar in production to Bobby Taylor. I sincerely hope you are right!

I think he will begin the season in the role that Shumate had last year, but as the season progresses it's going to become evident that he needs to be in the field. I would love a defensive backfield of Russel, Shumate, Redfield and Jackson. That's not to say others wont contribute but that's a pretty athletic back line.

Hell after watching the video im tempted to say put him at reciever.

I was just watching his film the other day and was thinking about that too. If he were to play receiver he'd probably be our top recruit at the position for this year. He's just so tall and athletic, there's no way he doesn't see the field this year.

Given recent developments, I was certain the body of the original post contained something relating to a transfer or other bad development.

How will see the field for sure this year and not just on special teams. But I just can't picture him starting against Temple.
