tdnd81 2
Not really shocking to me at all. http://irish.nbcsports.com/2013/06/06/kelly-names-rees-starting-quarterback/related/
KellyisNasty 0
Rees is like the backup prom date who you have just in case every other girl says no.
Rocketsan 877
Rees is like the backup prom date who you have just in case every other girl says no. you know you have a chance of scoring with him before the night's over...
dsnack34 0
How good of a QB is Tommy if you take away his propensity for turnovers? If he turns it over 8 times the entire season, can he lead us to the NT game? Do you think he can be the WB to win every game this season if he doesn't have the turnovers? AlabamaDuck 0
Rees named starting QB for the Summer workouts. I wonder who will be named starting QB for the Temple game.

IrishFan33 0
Are we also moving back to a Pro-Style offense.... Rees can't run a spead style offense, it has been proven.... i see alot of 3 and outs all next season..... So when do we start talking about 2014
MyFightingIrish 0
I hate to say it, but Tommy is the best option right now. Hopefully he will have improved a bit and can keep the turnovers to a minimum. If that happens, we still have a shot at 10 wins, IMO. REMND 0
It makes some sense. Maybe there will be less team distraction knowing who the starting QB is projected to be. Plus, the rest of the team is so used to Rees, I am guessing that if they were voting on their preferred starter, it would be Rees. Maybe there is another advantage. The rest of the team knows Rees cannot win games by himself so they might place more responsibility on themselves to improve. The RBs must know that their carries might be more numerous. Katzenboyer 0
It's the right call. Just curious -- if Kelly said that Zaire was the starter for summer, what would the record predictions be? Are we winning 8+ game with a true freshman QB who has never faced a live college defense, comes from a running offense in high school, and who's knock is that he has a lot of work to do on his mechanics before he can lead a college offense? We just lost the QB who took us to the national title game, and people are boo-hoo'ing a possible 8-5 year. Unbelievable. Talk to me about what Hoke does if he loses Gardner, or what Meyer would do if he lost Braxton Miller. Let's keep calm here folks, and not bury the season before it begins. MyFightingIrish 0
Hello 8-5, thank you for taking a year off. touche... but, we need to remember that 2011's record included 2 losses (USF and UM) that were aided by 10 total turnovers. That was an anomaly... the exception, not the rule. That team was 2 plays away from being a 10 win team. I think the rest of the team, especially the defense, is lightyears ahead of 2011. So to my point above, if Tommy avoids the meltdown 5 turnover games, this team should absolutely win 10 games. Especially when you consider the schedule ND plays this year. zemaniak 105
I call two QBs in the backfield, keep opponent guessing which is the decoy play after play Tommy, Malik: learn to catch...or at least block...prefrably both!

OKCIrish99 3
The university officially dismissed this as Rees not officially being named the starter. Kelly simply said "We have Tommy Rees." That is certainly true. I'd be surprised if he doesn't start v. Temple though.

jessemoore97 1,478
It is what it is. I'm not too worried about who's named starter right this minute. Let's see who works their *** off during the summer(who on the team not just QB's) and enters Fall camp ready to go. Rees would be the obvious crutch to lean on while trying to bring along MZ and prepare him as the future. I'm interested in how Kelly and Martin deal with the situation. They obviously know what they have in Rees abilities and the lack of proven playmakers/veterans in the offensive skill positions. How are they going to game plan when D's potentially stuff our inexperienced runners then drop eight into coverage begging Tommy to try and beat them with his arm? I too fear a lot of three and outs(again) or turnovers.
hawaiiirish 62
This was logical---it was inevitable---but I still hope that when we get into fall we will be going with some MIX of the QBs that can give us some flexibility , some unpredictabilaty, some hope for an offense that can more productive then it has been during tommy's last FOUR major oputings. If it is simply REES until he fails---then its going to be rough sledding--with only Tommy I see us losing 2 of the first six---& very possibly 3 of the first seven. So I am going to still hold out hope that by mid-fall we have SOMETHING better then a shrunken playbook that caters to Rees's limitations and a plan for tommy getting 100% of the snaps. A 2011 redux is coming down the pike if we don't give defenses more then Tommy Rees's short passes and hand offs. Let hope Kelly has more then this in his planning. aloha's
