OKCIrish99
Great read. Our defense is going to be awesome next year. Jaylon Smith, Redfield, and Vanderdoes are no jokes at all coming in. II had a great, recent read on Vanderdoes. He's lost about 20 lbs and is very fit. The article compared him favorably to Ndamukong Suh at this point. Enjoy: http://www.sbnation.com/college-football/2013/5/16/4334450/notre-dame-football-2013-season-preview-schedule Also, I don't know why, but I have a feeling Vanderdoes is going to have a wonderful mean streak to him (not as bad as Suh though.) Just get that vibe.
smaster
Thanks, OKC. This guy is obviously excited for ND's potential in 2013, and it rubs off. But holy manufactured statistics! Adjusted score? Adjusted W-L (by which stat we beat Alabama!!!)? PPP+? FC/120 Ratio? And my personal favorite, F/+. I looked further into this, and it's merely a combination of FEI and S&P+. Ah, got it. This guy has been hanging out with the baseball nerds for too long. All that said, he knows ND inside and out and has high hopes for them. Melikey. I really like how he pointed out how many 4-5 stars we have, currently, at rb and wr. Linebackers are loaded also. If this team has a running back step up and a defensive leader (ala 2012 Teo), the sky is the limit. Talent is not an issue.

OKCIrish99
I think we need a break out WR as well. That will be Davaris Daniels my friend. He was very productive as a freshman when healthy. Very athletic and good hands. He won't be Floyd or Tate but still very good. Don't know if we'll ever see another Tate or Floyd. Extremely special players. REMND
That was encouraging. It echoes what many here have said. We should have an excellent defense next year. BK has the program going in the right direction. Production at receiver and RB is where we are most questionable and our success next year may hinge on who steps forward at those positions. As the article points out, we have a bunch of 4 star or more candidates at those positions.
OKCIrish99
My point is ...We need a Floyd or Tate.Uh no we don't. We almost won the national championship last year with a redshirt freshman qb and pretty green receivers. Correct me if I'm wrong, I don't recall Golden Tate or Michael Floyd ever getting that close to winning a title game. Defense and line play win titles not 1 stud wr. Please expand on your assertion that we need a Tate/Floyd type of receiver to win the nc.
Rocketsan
Looking for Nicklas to have a big year. I think he's nearly unstoppable in the red zone if we can get him the ball...
OKCIrish99
Looking for Nicklas to have a big year. I think he's nearly unstoppable in the red zone if we can get him the ball...I hope. He is HUGE. Larger than Rudolph/Eifert. I met Rudolph at spring game 2010, and he was darn big. Niklas is even bigger. I pity defenders trying to cover him or especially tackle him at full speed. I hope "Hercules" explodes this season.

I have said before, I am looking forward to seeing if Niklas grows into a force this year. I think he will. We had another thread on this and some are clearly more in a wait and see mode re Niklas. One thing I do not expect though is YAC from Niklas. I do not think we will get a lot of opportunity to see what he does with a full head of steam running into the secondary after a catch. That is fine because I see him as a huge possession receiver whose size will be very difficult for the opponents secondary to deal with. Niklas just needs to learn how to exploit that. I think Niklas is bigger than Rudolph but their measurables seem to be the same. Both are around 6'7" and 260. Still, most say Niklas is bigger. It must be because his frame could add even more bulk. Some people expected him to become an OT (300+ lbs). I never heard that about Rudolph.
VCDomer
Uh no we don't. We almost won the national championship last year with a redshirt freshman qb and pretty green receivers. Please expand on your assertion that we need a Tate/Floyd type of receiver to win the nc. The argument that we will be fine because we got to the NCG with green receivers is baffling to me. We made it there because of defense a decent running game and a decent passing game (and a few lucky breaks). Not making it to the NCG with a Floyd and Tate is more a reflection of lack of a dominating defense and a consistent running game and QB play during their era. Our running game is a huge question mark right now. Many questions about GA3 being an every down back between the tackles. Mahone? Bryant? Folston? Amir? Cam(lol)? With all those question we need to have a way to move the chains in the passing game and be better in the red zone. We still dont know if Nicklas will be the chain mover and we certainly have the same question about DD and Breezy Brown. I am not convinced in DD or hands of stone Brown yet. I hope that we see the progress we all expect this year. We lose Eiffert who clearly was our end zone threat, chain mover and best receiver. We have TJ who is a great posession receiver and really should be in the slot. Maybe I am alone here, but I have concerns about sustaining drives that dont rely on the legs of EG. That is why we need a stud receiver who can out muscle anyone guarding him (Floyd) or who is versatile enough to play slot and wide and is a threat to take it to the house every time he touches the ball (Tate). Right now we dont have (or seem to have) either. Match that with a new backfield.... a QB who hasnt demonstrated good field vision..... call me concerned. OKCIrish99
VC, thank you for the detailed response. I am not claiming we're going to win the nc or even go again, but I do feel if we get an everydown running back (Bryant, Carlisle, etc.) and a team leader on defense (Jackson, Tuitt, or Nix), this team will be damn good. The schedule is manageable and the lines are awesome. Golson will take the next step as the physical tools are clearly there, and all the reports this spring says he is leading the team and working very hard. Too much talent at rb/wr for them to not work out. TJ/Daniels/Prosise should rock next year. Color me also concerned about Brown's hands but will keep my fingers crossed. Mainly, I am optimistic for 2013 due to the defense/lines and Golson. Also, the continuity and the coaching are looking stellar.
Rockets Revenge
Didn't we have this same argument last year? Everyone was worried there would be a drop off in offensive production because of Floyd's graduation. 2011 5369 yds 3404 pds pass 2085 yds rush 29.2 pts/game 2012 5358 yds 2896 yds pass 2492 yds rush 25.8 pts/game Not much difference in overall yardage. Slight decrease in pts but the defense improved from allowing 20.9 pts/game in 2011 to 12.7 pts/game in 2012. ND has more depth now than 2011 or 2012. I think ND will be fine as long as the defense stays below 15 pts/game.

I think we all felt good about Eiffert and TJ and the veteran backfield. I do agree with your statement about keeping teams below 15 points. I think that is critical.
