.....this sucks for what I think was the best role model out there these days....looks like he will be answering a whole lot of questions that are gonna suck to answer for the next few months...I feel bad for him I really do....and I respect the person he seems to be and what he stands for enough to believe him until he is proven guilty of using "this" for personal gain

McShay is in Los Angeles for this week's NFLPA bowl, a postseason all-star game with 70-plus scouts in attendance. "It was amazing," McShay said. "You could kind of sense everyone in the stands watching practice starting to read their phones and the story regarding Te'o. And within 20 minutes from the end of practice I had spoken to more than ten NFL scouts, all coming up to me asking if I had more information. ... The initial reaction was very negative. But in the long run, NFL teams have their own security departments. And they're going to get to the bottom of this story. They are relentless in pursuit of truth."

Mods: title should have takes in it....sorry I drink when my role models come out to be "frauds"....gonna be a great first day of semester tomorrow

This is why I think I believe Teo's side of the story. His agent has to know that his potential employers will want to vet their 1st round pick so it doesn't blow up in their face and become a PR nightmare later.

He couldn't hide his involvement if he wanted to.

I 100% believe Te'o and Notre Dame's explanation of this event. This is not a matter of having a "side of the story". The woman Manti Te'o believed he was in an online, but emotional and ongoing relationship with was a hoax. The people who perpetrated the hoax are being unmasked all over the internet tonight and Manti will have to answer idiot questions about it for a very long time...

Truth be told I hope it DOES affect his draft status for selfish reasons....I want to see Manti fall all the way to the Bears in the first round so that he can come take his place in the pantheon of MLB's -- Butkus, Buffone, Singletary, Urlacher, Te'o...the rest of it makes no difference to me - haters gonna hate and when it comes to Notre Dame, when the program is hot and winning, that hate hits white-hot and stays there...

I meant "side of the story" as to what happened to the best of his knowledge. I'm sure there is a lot out there that is still unknown to even Manti.

There's quite a bit of time between now and the draft so it remains to be seen how much this affects his stock. We're less than twelve hours into this bizarre saga and that's very early to be passing judgement, especially since the initial report from Deadspin was biased towards the notion of him being complicit.

If it turns out he was involved to whatever degree, it would obviously be a blemish on his reputation/character but while it may have garnered him more attention than he may have otherwise received, it's not like testing positive for steroids in an attempt to give himself a competitive advantage. It's poor judgement that in the end, harmed mostly himself, although ND might get a PR rap for supporting him unconditionally early on. What else is new when you're under the microscope regardless of how good you are?

If it turns out he was just naive, gullible or blinded by love even if it wasn't truly mutual and he was the victim, it won't affect his stock and how he responds to it may actually enhance it.

If this story lingers for months, than it would likely leave some doubt among NFL front offices and may affect it to some degree. I think NFL teams will wait and see how it plays out along with doing their own digging, especially if they have him rated high on their boards. There are three months left for them to make up their minds.

Depending on the outcome, it may cost him some money but I don't think it will define whether he's successful in the NFL or not. It's not as though this is something that is going to turn him into a seventh round draft pick. JMO.

I'm with both of you on this. BUT, as Bears fans we all know that Cutler and Forte need help on the line which I think is the new Coach's priority.....then someone to replace the aging and great Urlacher. :focus:

Add me to the list of Bear's fans that think the offensive line should take the highest priority. Unfortunately, the o-line is more than just one draft pick away from being fixed. The worst job in the NFL is any quarterback who has to stand behind that o-line.

I realize this thread just got hijacked, but it sure feels refreshing to discuss something other than the Manti story for at least five seconds.

Agree on O-line as priority, but also up there is a TE who doesn't have hands like cinder blocks.....

I'm not sure his stock will really take a hit now. It looks like he wasn't involved in making this up. Also, the NFL has proven they will draft guys in the top ten with drug history or beating up women. Stuff that is much worse.

I don't understand why it would hurt his draft stock at all. What does this entire thing have to do with his on-field performance? Even if he did orchestrate the whole thing, which I highly doubt, what does any of that have to do with how he would play in the NFL? I think people are severely over-reacting to this whole thing. But I guess sports media will jump all over any chance to rip into ND...

Perhaps if he were to bank roll a dog fighting ring in the next couple of months he'll a better pick in the draft?

Both Bill Polian & John Clayton were just on ESPN and both were of the opinion this WILL NOT seriously affect manti's draft status.

They say this is a strnge story that teams will want to have a handle on but that there is no character issue & no criminal issue --manti was the victim in this---so nothing to really damage his draft even though its all unique.

where was Teo expected to be drafted? I would think 1st round at least. where does he get drafted now?

they talked some today on CNN about it. Teo is middle linebacker. they said that middle linebacker is like the QB of the defense, and how other defensive players have to trust the middle linebacker. they wondered whether future teammates would be able to trust Teo after all of this, even if he ends up being 100% innocent.

can teams really take a chance on Teo still in the 1st round? or does he drop to the 2nd? or even 3rd?

if NFL scouts or whatever want to break down Teo's play, maybe they say Teo's play in 2012 was based off this false story for isnpiration. now as far as I remember Teo has always been good, but wasn't 2012 his best season by far? and therefore maybe some will question his 2012 level, and maybe value him based on previous seasons instead?
