Certainly seeing the university stand behind one of its own under duress--WILL NOT HURT RECRUITING---

Manti--gullable or culpable---

Swarbrick makes a persuasive case its gullable---even down to online chatter by the perpetrators celebrating their success---

Swarbrick an impressive fella--- would not mind having him in my corner in a bad spot---

lack of motive as i have been harping on is a tell here---

This clearly also explains that my assumption that there was MORE to the defensive fiasco on jan 7---then bama's oline----no doubt teo and likely much of the defense was aware that something bad was going down that directly translated to the piss poor effort in january.---

ESPN reporting accustaions that Teo was in on the whole thing based on the deadspin article and a freind of the tuiasssopu fella---i would give MORE CREDENCE to swarbricks investigation at this point then a claim of being 80% sure by a freind of the doer.

Tough spot--but may not end up as big a deal as it seemed today.

Taking everything into account after that press conference, this is a lose lose situation regardless of what truth comes out. Of course it would be worse if Te'o was somehow behind this (at this point I think he wasn't), but it is a horrible story if Te'o was simly a victim as well. It's sick to think about how the alleged perpetrators called him while he was attending the college football awards to mock him-can't imagine what was going through if this report is true...

My thoughts exactly. Man can you imagine playing the biggest game of your life after finding out your girlfriend of 3 years and her death are fake????? WTF! Man I feel for ya Manti! Keep your faith the strong will survive!

he will lose in the court of public opinion...........it's a shame........at least he wasn't a bugger.............

After Swarbrick's PC, I am convinced that Manti is guilty of being nieve, and feeding into the media frenzy and embellishing some of the story, knowing that it was THE story of the college football season. I do not however, think he knowingly participated in fooling the college football nation into thinking a non existent girlfriend died of luekemia.

Hopefully he admits to as much, apologizes for getting carried away, and emphasizes that the the loss he felt was real, even if it was for a non existent girlfriend, and he urges people to be more careful going forward. Sound Good!

When is the spring game?;)

So far, this seems spot on with my conclusions at least.

I think the story maybe got the best of Manti and he embellished a few details to partially validate an "internet girlfriend".

But, I've not seen anything that leads me to believe he took part in this hoax in any role other than a victim.

Hiring an investigative firm was smart. Leaving the timing of breaking the story to the family was not.

Agreed, ND needed to be a step ahead of the posse (read BSPN) and should have told the family that they would begin investigation and the best thing to do was put it out there -- even before the BCS game

I agree, but if ND really believes that Manti is a victim, I can see why they thought it was up to him to break the story. If they go to law enforcement, the story becomes public, possibly against the victims wishes. I think they had to be sensitive about this.

No matter what, I feel confident that Swarbrick did what was in the university's best interest, even if it isn't evident at the moment.

Yeah, I go with that. While retaining a certain amount of healthy skepticism.

"Embellishing" -- good word find there.

yes, they could have suggested that. but decision was not NDs to make I presume.

The privacy law is somewhat ambiguous in that it does not work both ways. Consider: the story was a private one that came out and shed a favorable light on one of our players and by extention our whole team. Since our PR dept reported the original story, didn't they have the right, if not the obligation, to correct it?

Is it private information that Lenay did not die or even exist; and, if so, whose privacy is violated there? That would in reality force Manti to respond, but that does not make the fact of her not existing a matter of privacy for Manti. Going into the details of how the hoax was perpetrated would then involve his privacy, but a report of the basic facts does not.

It would seem that there has to be a law against doing what the perpetrators did to Manti, and, of course, it is illegal if it affected the outcome of a game upon which millions of dollars are bet or if there is any evidence that there was a plan to extort or otherwise blackmail the victim.

While I believe Te'o is a true victim here, I find it very difficult to believe that the team didn't know...hell, my friends don't give a rat's ass about Te'o or Notre Dame and I couldn't wait to tell them this craziness...I can't imagine having a real connection to the program and being able to hold back from telling others close to it...

They all likely did NOT know all the details but i think its easy to surmise that the team DID KNOW something was very wrong ,some may have had specifics after dec 26th and the revelation to coaches-,--Teo's attitude if not his shaken confidence would tell the tale.

i am convinced this was a factor in our totally OUT OF CHARACTER performance especially on defense in january.

Local news out here obviously is running this as the LEAD STORY---they are treating him as the victim here.

For those who wanted Notre Dame to release the story sooner...exactly WHEN?

Dec. 26th in advance of the National Title Game? I believe JS 100% - it was unknown at that time if attempts at extortion or blackmail were possible or anything else...

January 8th? The same day that Brian Kelly story broke and the world was consumed with so much speculation that the epic blow out in the MNC game was already forgotten? How exactly would THAT have helped the situation at all?

No, I support the decision to let Manti make an announcement. Its unfortunate that Deadspin learned of this and rushed their hit piece to press in order to garner fame for "breaking" the story.

I also believe JS when he says that he 100% believes Manti and that everything prior to December the 7th was genuine and real reaction on Manti's part. Maybe I am eventually made the greater fool in this one, but I am sticking with JS's judgement and Manti's PROVEN character over the last 4 years.

Think about it guys....how many people were deperately trying to get Tim Tebow to get caught having sex with a woman for no other reason than to tear him down? This smacks of the same motive - frustrated losers dragging down a famous person? Nah, that NEVER happens...far more likely that a hereto for paragon of integrity and virtue was complicit in a massive hoax that would garner him exactly NOTHING!

After Manti's eventual press conference a whole lot of hack "writers" and "reporters" are going to have a lot to atone for...

I agree 100%.

The two players on our defense that had the worst games I saw them play all year were Te'o and Motta. Seniors. Co-captains. Season-long standouts and the emotional center of the team. Whether or not Motta knew what Manti knew that night is worth finding out. I could easily see him confiding in a co-captain...maybe KLM or Motta?

The Manti Te'o that was missing tackles and getting bad angles and looking "slow" was simply not the same player that we had seen throughout the season and throughout his career. I was immediately aghast watching the first quarter of that game and could not believe my eyes. Te'o played like absolute shit in that game.
