This isn't directly aimed at Kelly, but sort of based on the circumstances.

However, what is a coach supposed to say at a press conference like Kelly was at. He was asked, two days before a title game remember, if he had any interest in the NFL.

His first answer was more or less, yes and no, depends on the time and place, etc. A pretty PC answer. Asked again, he said he had a great job, had no intention of leaving.

So he essentially said he wouldn't close the door on the NFL, but as of then, didn't plan on leaving.

What else is he supposed to say? If he says a definitive yes, he gets killed to bailing two days before the title game. If he says no, he gets killed if he ever decided to go. If he says what he said, he gets killed if he interviews, even though he said he might in the future.

Basically, the only acceptable answer would be, "No, I am 100% with ND, I would never interview with the NFL", then of course, never interview.

However, if it is in his mind at all that he'd like to try one day, what else is he supposed to say?

How about, "I'm flattered by the interest because the NFL is the greatest football league on earth, but right now, my focus is on winning a championship. This team has unfinished business."

Perfect answer!

You misinterpreted the quote. He was insinuating that he wants them to move up the chain and will help them in anyway he can. Otherwise, Diaco wouldn't be on this coaching staff, seeing as how he interviewed for jobs leading up to the NC game....

Right, he doesn't want guys moving/interviewing for lateral jobs, ie OC at ND to OC at Florida. Moving up is stature is what most coaches want to do. Blocking that would not be alright.

By that logic, the NFL is ahead of college, so he isn't violating his own principle.

Philydomer getting more irrational by the second.

The reason I think the nuclear option should not have been exercised is because Kelly and Swarbrick were set to meet after the season ended, and Swarbrick had already stated publicly that raises and extensions were on the table. This is what leads me to believe that Kelly was interested in more than just money -- he's interested in jumping to the NFL and is testing the waters. That's certainly his prerogative, and I'm not going to cry if he chooses to leave. I just think that he has the media savvy of Lebron James, and he's lost a lot of personal equity from those at the university for creating a media storm over it.

PS: Since Gunslinger likes my postscripts, here's another: does anyone remember how coldblooded Kelly was when asked about the possibility of his assistants looking for other positions or interviewing? If I recall, he said that if they plan on doing so they better hope they get the job, insinuating that he didn't want them back. He demands loyalty of his coaches, why shouldn't ND demand at least the tactfulness to handle these things privately?

True, but did he say how big of extension or raise? No. Did he say assistants were included in the raises? Nope. Did he make it clear athletic improvements were on the table? Nope.

So, you could be right and this is all about Kelly getting what is good for Kelly.

But, it could also be about Kelly getting what is good for ND, and having to go this route to get it. We just don't know.

What damage has really been done? ND lost one kid, who clearly had to have been thinking of leaving anyway. Otherwise, the title game is mostly no longer being discussed, while ND shows it has a coach the NFL might want.

Not totally terrible in the end.

The only storm he created was the ridiculous, irrational reactions of silly fans like Phillydomer

The rest of us accept this as standard procedure for successful, high-quality college coaches and deal with it accordingly.

BadaBing, you've been making nothing but ad hominem attacks for a while now. I take it as a compliment to the strength of my argument that you can't retort rationally.

Bottom line: I have loyalty to Notre Dame as a Catholic institution of higher learning. Football comes second. That means, BadaBing, that unlike you, I will not support oversigning, nor will I support coaches' attempts to hold the university hostage. I understand this is standard operating procedure at the likes of Oklahoma and Alabama. But there's a reason why we root for Notre Dame: because it does things the right way.

You'd be the first guy calling to throw him out on the street if he was 7-5 every year while graduating 100 percent of his kids.

Spare me the holier than tho act

Kelly was trying to do what he thought best for the program and himself in the long term. Would you sacrifice a single 4* LB recruit if it meant locking Diaco into a big contract and keeping him on the payroll for a few more years? Did you see what happen to RGIII's knee on that shitty ass grass they play on in DC? Kelly wants a better playing surface, he wants a jumbotron, both of which will help to lure recruits and help the performance on the field.

I understand you sentiments, I do. But when it comes to money...you do what you must. Kelly will be coaching here for 3-5 more years at least. There is a difference between what Notre Dame stands for on the field and in the classroom, and a man trying to provide for his family and his staff. Can't you see that?

Dear Sweet Jonathan and his band of dewy-eyed dreamers are vexed. Most vexed, indeed. Just look at their puffy eyes and tear-stained cheeks. See the bruises beginning to bloom atop their scraped knuckles? From pounding out their frustration on their knees, you see.

“Why? Why is Kelly such a big, fat, classless meanie? He lied! He lied to the kids! He lied to THE WORLD! I should have known. I should have known when he recruited that scoundrel, Yuri Wright. He’s just not a Notre Dame man.”

Feel better? Why don't you get up off the floor. There, that's better. I think there’s some tissues on the table (So sorry they're not the kind infused with aloe). Why don't you grab a few and dab the snot from your quivering lips.

Now, this might be difficult for you to understand, but I think it's high time someone told you the truth. Enough with the lies, you know? Enough with the sneaking around and hiding behind the bushes like a stinker. Let's get it out there in broad daylight for everyone to see:

Notre Dame is not a university. It’s just a business.

And the only reason we as fans are finally seeing tangible, robust improvements with the football team is because the program is finally being run like one.

You milksops would do well to cotton on to that fact—and that utilizing the media is the single greatest negotiating tactic available to humanity. Your illusions are darling, but they’re seriously retarding your development as a rational human being . . .

awesome post, phony.

he reminds me of the food critic in Pixar's Ratatouille.

You might want to cut some slack here. People are clearly suffering from PISD...

That's Post Irrelevant Stress Disorder...

This can make just about any DDer go crazy.

Am I weird that when ever I see or here the word "Critic" the first and only thing that pops into mind is John Lovitz?
