More good news when we need it after last night's debacle - J Slaughter is coming back for his 6th year. It was approved. Lock it in and not just speculation.

We will have A Collingsworth and J Slaughter at safety and the rest can fight for playing time.

Great news!

This is good news. Time will tell how he comes back from a tough injury that a lot of times ends careers.

Also, I'm curious why everyone has Collinsworth penciled in as a starter? He saw pretty limited action, and mostly on special teams his freshman year. At this point Farley has light years more experience than he does.

What about Shumate/Max R (as long as that LOI comes in)/CJ Procise fighting for that vacant job?? Maybe Lo moves to the spot Shumate played this year and he moves back to safety.

Badger too???

Glad to hear Slaughter is back, think Collinsworth is a longshot at best to start, after last nights game we need to inject as much speed as possible.

Im ok with slaughter and Dan Fox playing for Kansas next year... Loaded depth charts need to produce upgrades at those positions... You can send Spond with them. I'm sure they are all great guys and I wish them well in all their pursuits, but we are not obligated to play all the seniors

I agree with fox and spond because anzalone, grace and smith could replace them but why Slaughter? He is the one db on our team who could be starting for pretty much any sec team. I've never had a problem since he's started playing minutes for us. Really fast and hits like a truck.

Source? I can't find anything on this.

This is the type of information that you get when you come to DD. The information isn't public yet.

I learned from Broker3D, Chiro, and the best.

Rewatch nd-FSU last year and you're going to feel awful silly saying that about Slaughter. Probably our BEST player on defense in 2011-yes that includes Manti/smith/etc.

And Spond? Are you kidding? Did u watch any of the games this year?

Sorry coach but this isn't your finest work. Knee-jerk reaction to the Bama debacle?

Slaughter is our best player in the secondary only if he is still the Slaughter before he got hurt.

If he's a liability back there, I don't know if I want to take him over a healthy recruit.

Collinsworth was considered to be equal to Zeke Motta in starting opposite of Slaughter before he was injured before the season started. Collinsworth is talented, he should not be overlooked.

I've never been impressed with Collinsworth's size. I know his measurables look decent, but I don't think he's as imposing as the numbers indicate when you see him. He just looks considerably smaller than Slaughter, Motta, or Harrison Smith.

By the time next season starts, Slaughter will be about a whole year removed from his injury. That's a decent period of time in which to recuperate and train. I'd love to have him back. He's a vicious player who hits harder than anyone on the team, including Manti.

RT @BGI_DanMurphy: NCAA denies #Irish DB Jamoris Slaughter's sixth year, source says. #ND can appeal if it wants: http://bit.ly/V3qkGq

That's disappointing for sure! Feel bad for Slaughter. Good luck on the rehab! Next man in.

That's a bummer. Would have liked to have his experience and leadership out there next year.

Strange thread. I would have welcomed back a healthy Slaughter, as it is we have a ton of talent, lots of bodies and some pretty good experience. My favorite safeties would be Redfield and Shumate. Farley will certainly be one of the starters. I would start Shumate next to him and bring Redfield in as the nickle. This is a serious upgrade.

experience and leadership, yes........back pedaling on a previously torn achilles, not so much............

I'm only curious where it was said the first time it was a "lock"

Da coach...

It never was. It was announced that Slaughter hand ND had applied for a 6th year but that was it. I think the original poster misinterpreted that as having been approved b the NCAA before it had actually been heard by the NCAA.

Admittedly, this was close to 7-8 years ago now, so maybe techniques and sports science has closed a gap since then, but Bears S Mike Brown tore his Achilles in '04. Began a long string of injuries, and his play was never quite the same after that.

My point is, I wouldn't be surprised if Slaughter doesn't come back as what he was right away. He might have been able to play on it a year from now, but it may take time to regain confidence in it, and ensure that he doesn't tax other parts of his body trying to compensate for it. While I feel like knee injuries have taken a huge step forward in the surgery/rehab process (just look at what Peterson did this year - even if he is the exception, it's still incredible), the Achilles is one of the trickier, more career threatening injuries out there. Mark Prior is another example of it's tricky nature.

With around 10 scholarship safeties coming in, I'm eager to give some of the younger guys the opportunity, but it's hard not to like Slaughter or feel for the guy. Lucky for him, he's got a free undergraduate degree from Notre Dame, as well as a year's worth of grad school under his belt already. Whether ND appeals or not, best of luck to him!
