I feel little disturbed saying this but, "YES!"

Maybe this is why the USC team was an hour late to the dinner with bowl opponent Georgia Tech. Quite late in the game for an official decommitment. Even if he's not Irish, at this point, I'd be surprised if he ends up at USC. Great to hear though and sure hope we land him. Heard he's a flat out stud.

Great news!! My favorite uncommitted recruit that we are in the mix with. A perfect time to get a quality athletic potential NT with Nix returning. A year to redshirt and develop.

I don't know about Vanderdoes redshirting. Frankly, think he'd be playing by midseason. He's more highly regarded than Nix coming into college and just a straight hass. Kelly has the program to a point now, where superior talent (Vanderdoes is in that class) plays 1st year. Also keep in mind, we have Jay Hayes coming in next year who may also play defensive tackle. Clearly, if Vanderdoes pledges Notre Dame, he is Nix's incumbent. He would be a massive get, no pun intended.

This also changes the situation with Official visits. There was only one open weekend for Vanderdoes to visit ND, but now that all changes. :)

EDIT (from IE): Well, maybe not, he still seems to taking a visit to U$C and making that his last, still intends to visit ND. Supposedly he is considering 4 schools and they are equal or close to each other. U$C, UCLA, ND, and UW.

EDIT: grammar fix...

I agree in most cases, except for the lines. I would not be surprised if Vanderdoes played, Day did but that was partially due to the numbers game.

2013 DL Depth excluding potential incoming recruits.

DE-Tuitt/Jones/Springmann

NT- Nix/Schwenke/Springmann

DE- Day/Hounshell/Utupo

No freshmen defensive linemen would be required to play assuming we stay healthy. We did not have the depth this year that we will next year along the defensive line. Vanderdoes could get in the mix at NT and DE ala Springmann, but only if he earns it. We will not have to force him or any of the other DL recruits into action due to the numbers crunch looking good for 2013.

Wonder what would happen if USC landed Chizik as their defensive coordinator?? I've heard it mentioned...

I think he stays USC or heads to UW but I would NOT count Oregon out even though they aren't being mentioned right now.

I think this puts us in much better shape. IMO we have moved from a long shot to an equal shot. We are the #1 team and our defensive line is the talk of the town , our NT is one of the best known in the country---its obvious we are in the mix now. Its also likely the odds he actually makes his visit have also jumped.

all in all very good news!

aloha's

is it possible that this decision to decommit is related to some desire to take a visit to notre dame? just speculation on my part, but was wondering.

It probably is. The kid is probably thinking, "I'm already visiting X number of schools - why not do this thing seriously and make sure I leave no stone unturned." With the way USC is trying to hold their class together rather than be the aggressors on the trail, I HIGHLY doubt they'd suddenly run out of space for Vanderdoes. I think it's more a tactic than a reflection of where his heart is at.

I've gathered that UCLA is probably in the best position to land him if he doesn't follow Smiling Ed back to USC. Whether he ends up falling in love with Notre Dame on an official visit or simply decides that a school other than USC offers more to him, decommitting is a really good thing for ND. His absence alone from a USC depth chart is a win for the Irish.

Still think he plays. He just strikes me as the type that wouldn't be content with a redshirt and could surpass Sprigmann/Schwenke. I agree it is wiser to redshirt him, but Kelly may have no choice to play him. Let's just get him to sign with ND first. Hearing whispers that Washington may be strongly in the mix now.

I'm thinking that guy who left cal for uw last year sways him there...however the Irish are certainly capable of swaying him

Sorry but I think the redshirt discussion is stupid.

As reported on the other thread he actually decomitted three weeks ago. After his visit, which he confirmed, I think he will be Irish.
