Very well done... This should be read by anyone who is not fully aware of where we stand with numbers and recruits.

I do have one critic though subway. It is Deon Hollins, not Hollis, you spelt it wrong 3 times, so I feel obligated to tell you about it.

Agreed on the senior leadership bit.

I can imagine that it will be very tempting to eat into one of those spots if you're talking about Vandedoes getting blown away on a January 25th OV (lets just imagine that he reschedules, and the visit is back on, for hypothetical's sake). Very tempting to treat this cycle as a full blown "down payment" towards the future if you're Tony Alford and BK sitting down in their recruiting bunker.

That said, I don't think that's in Kelly's DNA to sacrifice now for later, and I think he knows the value of having some greybeards to guide the young puppies. A year ago, most everyone on this board was nervous about Zeke Motta, and looked to Slaughter as the guy in the secondary. Now we've got Mike Mayock talking about Zeke as a 2nd day (read: 2nd-3rd round) draft pick while reflecting on him in terms as the unquestioned leader of the exceedingly young secondary. I don't think that those late bloomer transformations are lost on Kelly (another great example would be Jonas Gray).

I imagine that those three spots will be filled by Folston, Redfield, and a pass rushing OLB rather quickly - and that if we have space for a Vanderdoes, or whichever other OLB is technically on the board, it'll be through attrition (medical announcements, transfers, etc).

Unless Kelly and staff know more about those factors than we do, I also don't see Slaughter coming back. If we land Redfield, that'd be 10 guys at safety without even factoring Jamoris in. I'd love to have him, but there'd be a lot of transfers before long.

That's how confident I am that he will not be at ND ;) Also... My bad guys!

Great points. My personal opinion is that if there is only one spot available, assuming Folston & Redfield commit, is that we should actually pass on AQM and go ALL in with Vanderdoes. Of all the guys I mentioned, I actually have Vanderdoes at the very top.

That's if we have no other wiggle room. A medical hardship still might happen, so there could be 4 spots. We just don't know yet.

I have no idea who we bring back for a fifth year outside of Martin but I would not be surprised if one of the 2 linebackers does not come back. We have to develop some of our depth or the year after will not be pretty. Id we let one go it allows us to break in a player who fills his gap. I would say someone like a Grace if he does not get Teo's spot.. I have no idea what goes on at practice or the coaches inner most thoughts. This would open up one more spot if we would need it and I do not think really we would be termendously weaker as a team in 2013.

Interesting idea. Given how likely it is that Vanderdoes sticks, I wouldn't do that if it's me, but it does open up another interesting idea.

Say we land Folston and Redfield. Say we put the stop sign in front of the OLBs for a shot at Eddie. Say Vanderdoes comes out right before signing day, sees snow on the ground, and says, "Screw that, I'm comin', song girls!" Lets say that by then, its too late to bring in a guy like Juwaan Williams or someone like him.

1 spot left. Do we give that to Tausch? He sat during his junior year because of Ruffer (unless my memory - and his UND profile - fail me), so he saved a year of eligibility. Insurance policy if Brindza pulls a hammy, and maybe we start working with Nick as our punter? I'd love to land an extra top 150 caliber kid, but it could be a blessing in disguise for our much maligned special teams unit.

Awesome breakdown Subway Domer. I love reading your blog, keep up the good work.

Passing on AQM is passing up some Justin Tuck like potential. Vanderdoes is a long shot at best. He is also an immediate impact type of player. If he wants in you make room.

If the main reason you want Carlo back is for leadership at ILB then what will Fox, Moore, and Grace be doing. It's not like Carlo is our only option.

Put me in the 3 to 4 years of AQM and or Vanderdoes with all american potential, in place of 1 year part time starter camp. Especially at a position where there are capable upperclassmen backups.

vanderdoes is a big time recruite for ND and at a position of need, but i agree im not sure i'd put all my eggs in the vanderdoes basket when you got possibly a sure thing in AQM. if it works thats great but if it doesn't you really messed up.

If it wasn't already obvious, I'm very, very high on AQM. Our defense needs a dominant CAT lb to be elite.

All very good points.

I want Calabrese back because you want productive starters back. Just because ND was amazingly healthy in the front 7 this year, it doesn't mean we won't need depth in 2013. As far as developing other players at the position goes, that's what practice and rotations in games are for. What if Fox gets injured? Now you have presumably Grace and Moore with more green behind them... No thanks. Calabrese was too productive this year to pass up.

As far as AQM goes, I agree that the guy has the potential to be a stud. However, ND is pretty stocked right now at OLB and at the CAT in particular. Romeo Okwara has all the makings of a future stud and Jaylon has been told he will be a CAT as well. I want AQM, so don't get me wrong, it's just that I don't think we need him given the current depth.

I realize Vanderdoes is a long shot, but because of USC's number game, I think he is very much in play. This is a guy you go after HARD. Balls to the wall hard. Whatever it takes. The problem now is timing.

I too thought a lot about the Tausch situation, and it remains curious to me. I think I remember hearing something about a back injury but maybe I'm confusing him with B. Walker. At any rate, it would appear that Kelly is willing to risk having just one kicker and punter next year to help at other positions. Perhaps there is a walk on that we don't know about.

Love this conversation y'all.

I get it, but keep in mind that is not exactly the trade-off. It would be 3-4 years of AQM for 1 year of a starter AND 3 years of whoever ND recruits for that roster spot in the 2014 class. So, keeping an extra 5th year for 2013 banks another schollie for the 2014 class. I will buy that you would not be able to find a guy like Vanderdoes in every class, not so sure about AQM.

A quick note on the kicking situation... Notre Dame offered a preferred walk on spot to Pennsylvania All-State kicker, John Chereson.

when that happens is it a situation of the parents being able to afford to pay notre dame's tuition, likely montana's kid, or is it a situation of the player taking out significant loans?

i would think if he is that good, he could get a scholarship somewhere else like pitt, West Virginia, maryland etc.

You keep Carlo and Fox .IMO Carlo will be playing as a two down linebacker in the NFL in two years. You don't just get rid of NFL caliber players if you can hold onto them.

Fox and Carlo are very underrated guys, also have improved alot from the start of the year to the finish. Those two guys will start in the middle next year and if you think otherwise your out of luck. Jaret Grace seems to be the guy to take over after the two but not just yet. Like Subway said you don't throw away talented, productive guys with leadership for a freshman.
