Do you think any of our guys use steroids? I honestly don't think so...The biggest gains I've seen was from Old Man Kappy, but the weight gains from the rest of our guys seem legit

Hmm. Interesting question. I guess it would be naive to say with certainty that no one did, but it doesn't appear ND has too many, if any guys, that have a "steroid body". That isn't to say none of them might be, but I don't see the outward signs you might expect.

There are probably a few guys on our team that take gray area/outright illegal supplements. And to say that you're not seeing anyone on our team that looks the part, well you haven't been looking too closely...Also, Braxton Cave is listed as one of the strongest people in CFB, which will raise a flag immediately (think hes clean, hes been a power lifter his whole life).

Brian Cushing immediately comes to mind...

Well, point me to who you think. When I think "steroids" I think 250-260 pounds of ripped muscle. No to very little fat. There are limits to what most people can do naturally. IE, that Brian Cushing photo. I don't see any guys on our team that look like that.

Typically, you can get very lean, muscular and ripped, or very large, muscular, but with "some" fat onboard, a guy like Cave for example.

Now again, there could be guys who do it, I'm just suggesting I haven't seen many bodies that fit what I would expect with steroids use.

Like you said with Cave, some guys are just really big guys, who are really strong. That doesn't imply steroids. But if Cave was that big with a defined 6-pack and a lot of vascularity on his arms and such, then sure, you could ask the question.

I mean, none of our guys look like this:

(yes, I know at least two of those are fake. That last one is me, am I'm not telling)

And sure enough, Cushing got busted in the league and had to sit a few games.

I have a friend that was an S&C coach at the University of Utah for a couple of seasons but recently got on with the University of Hawaii (kind of followed Norm Chow over there).

I asked him about this very topic a while ago and he gave me some good perspective on it. The guidelines for the supplements that are provided by the university are very stringent--to the point that basic things like protein have to be certified. Basically, if athletes are taking PEDs, they're doing a good job of keeping it under the radar. I'm certain that there are players on the juice, but he couldn't validate that or refute.

He also mentioned a couple of players that he was assigned to while he was a GA that he would have to call every 3 hours to ensure that they were eating and tell them exactly what to eat. In one case a player under his guidance gained about 20 lbs during the off season and this kid was a bean pole coming in.

My personal experience, after I graduated HS and had more time to commit to the gym and nutrition I gained 30 mostly solid pounds over the course of about 6 months. The only things I took were creatine, NO2 and protein with a well balanced diet. It was just a matter of maturation for me as I peaked at about 245 by the time I was 23...

My overall sentiment is that juice is prevalent in collegiate athletics but there are also people that just grow into their "man" bodies during their late teens/early 20's.

Not popular opinion but I view PEDs as part of the evolution of sports...much like equipment evolves (golf clubs, bats, etc...) players also find ways of gaining a competitive advantage and ways to stay ahead of the latest testing methods. With the amounts of money that can be at stake, I can understand why.

More so than college, High School is a pit of HGH and Steroids because they don't have the trainers or diet they end up getting in college...

I too do not think that Cave is a user because it does not seem that he has jumped in strength all that much during his time at ND. He came in at a high level and has built from there but I do not think that his bench max, for example, has increased more than about 20-30 pounds per year. I thought that he came in with a max about 400 pounds and was lifting 520 in December 2011.

Good point...there was no testing in UT while I was playing HS ball but I do know of several kids on my team and others that were juicing.

Again, Niklas has been a big dude his whole life, but this is probably what you have in mind when you're thinking steroid guy.

Not really actually. Troy is big and muscular, but he really isn't "ripped". Again, I'm going off of past experience and looks, mostly in body-building, guys at the local gym type of stuff.

Perhaps the players have different goals and so they don't get that same look.

I could be way off, and as I said, it'd be naive to think no one is doing it.

Not sure why anyone would talk about specific guys w/out any substantiation.

Like this:

(She actually turned down a pro fitness model career because she didn't want to do steroids, but I though the photo fit here)

Because its a discussion board where I was naming some examples of guys who might raise red flags. I also then qualified each as genetic freaks who have been that way since they were in HS.

I'm not sure why anyone would be confused as to why I used those two examples while stating that they were two guys who I thought were clean.

What I loved were the guys at my high school that juiced but never really lifted. They would come into the weight room with their bags of McDonald's fast food and mess around with a few sets of bench and that was about it. They ended being high school studs due to natural ability but washed out in college. If you are going to assume the health risks from steroids, at least work your ass off to get the max benefits from them

Damn 1930's juicers

im sure their are steriods in CFB but it's not hard for these kids to put on serious weight when getting to college. these kids are college athletes because they have the talent but also because the have the bodies that can build muscle and burn fat like a machine. when these kids come out of high school most of them have never been on any type of diet or serious workout plan and once they do they explode. the one player that comes to mind is justin tuck. tuck came to ND as a 6'4 210 lb. lanky OLB and left ND four years later at a muscled up 275 lbs. DE, his weight gains went something like 210-245-265-275.

It is very naive to think that no one on the team is on some form of PED. I honestly would be shocked if the entire team was clean. I don't get why some people think that if you are on steroids you have to have a certain "look." I have known quite a few guys that regularly cycled steroids and worked out religiously and never got as impressive looking as a lot of the guys on ND's team.

Because those guys who know that cycled? They didn't weren't graced with the perfect body frames. Notre Dame is in the business of taking kids with perfect athlete frames. I could put in twice the work that they do and pump myself full of PEDs but it won't matter. I have a runners build, I'd never look as impressive as, for example, Cierre Wood.

If you honestly believe that there are no guys on the Irish football team that take PEDs then there is nothing I can say that will convince you. The guys that play college football are not the only people that were gifted with good genetics. Personally, I would be beyond shocked if the entire team was completely clean. Just my opinon.
