I need some help with research on a piece I intend to do. Please.

How many times can you name that we got lucky this year? How many times can you name that we got unlucky last year?

To start us off:

This year: obviously, the FG attempt by Pitt in overtime but there were also a couple fumbles by Golson that either went out of bounds, were recovered by him, or, in the case of Stanford, was called a personal foul hit against the D. Can anyone point to any specific instances of fumbles that should have been?

Last year: I'l start off with the fumble by Jonas Gray that was picked up by South Florida and returned 96 yards for a touchdown. Players fumble, but to have it be a 14 point reversal on one play is pretty unlucky.

Well even the fumble against usc last year killed us. We have had a lot of unlucky stuff happen to us especially since the Weis years. To finally have the close games go our way feels awesome. Also puts me in a way better mood because the way we would lose some games would make me pretty angry.

Calling that stanford TD against oregon was lucky for us as well--

We have had alot of GOOD CALLS--GOOD REVIEWS---

So yes lady luck---but ask any poker player--if you play the right way, if your consistent-- luck will reward you .

We showed discipline that you see in the lack of penalties--we tackled hard--we stayed in our positions---all of that helped luck along---

Last year we played messy in many ways and we had ZERO LUCK--we were the ANTI-LUCK------This year we played hard, disciplined & focused from wire to wire and luck came along for the ride.

WE MADE OUR LUCK_--Pitt would never have missed a clutch second overtime FG if we hadn't come from behind like crazy--overcoming a turnover in the endzone--attacking & attacking--90 yard drives--pressure 2 point conversions---WE CAME BACK__PITT CHOKED BECAUSE OF IT----

Luck yes---but Luck we put ourselves in the spot to have.

I expect some more LUCK on january 7--

Did you mean the Stanford-Oregon game? If Oregon had won, we'd still be in this thing, but probably ranked #2 instead of #1. Then again, if Oregon beat Stanford, they would have to play again in the PAC12 Champ game, right?

If stanford doesn't beat oregon and make us #1 in that weekend--who knows what would have happened---would we have played the same game against USC as the #2 team---

We had golson & nix both laying like dead on the field in two games in critical moments--and both guys were like in the movie "heaven can wait" jumped back to life only losing a play.

How about the REES pass to TJ that took us to overtime--TJ was either a little lucky reaching back for that ball or else it was THE CATCH OF THE YEAR--

Manti's pick against Oklahoma---right time at the right place--a little luck or cat like reflexes playing in the solid position?

Damn luck--it can be a life saving friend or a purveyor of death---

What about the HIT BY NOTRE DAME LEGACY ANTHONY BARR ON BARKLEY___Coincidence--Luck--Chance --???

What a season---bama better watch out the irish will be there but so will the notorious "luck of the irish"--

Who knows....maybe a 1 loss Alabama would have passed us if we were number 2

Yep--who knows---I'm more then happy to take that irish luck with us to miami and on into 2013, 14 and as long as lucky Kelly runs the outfit---

Roll Irish---

Here are some random lucky moments from this year.

1. Purdue game, 3rd and 6 conversion from TR to Goodman. At the time, 3rd and 6 seemed like an eternity. Plus, the quick pressure on TR, total 10 yard Hail Mary, nice reaction by Goodman. Rationalize if you want, but that was lucky.

2. Lucky that Hoke was dumb enough to run a halfback pass inside the red zone. Doesn't really count tho, since that is just dumb.

3. The drops by Miami in the opening drive were lucky. Of course, ND wears them down regardless, so it doesn't really matter. But the game has a different feel early with those two drops.

4. The missed FG and PI call in the Pitt game, as noted.

I think we're lucky we had Tommy Rees and I think we're lucky all the QB changes early on. I think the injury bug treated us well for the most part as well.

Pass interference against Pitt, Riddick catch against Stanford these were lucky plays that were well prepared for.

1. Golson extending the ball to barely get the pylon against Purdue.

2. Goodman's on-handed TD catch against MSU. Gave ND momentum in the game and quieted the crowd.

For all the talk about how lucky we were against Pitt, anyone who watched that game knows we caught some bad breaks as well. After Riddick had his TD called back from a replay review in the first quarter, he clearly got in the next play as he was on top of another player and not really down. For some reason the play was not reviewed, if it had been that was a TD. Then you had Brindza missing a gimme field goal in regulation (no one talks about that miss only Pitt's OT miss) and Wood's fumble going untouched into the end zone. What erks me is when people who didn't even watch the Pitt game talk about how ND should have lost. ND had over 500 yards while Pitt barely had over 300 (with the majority of those coming on just two big plays), and without a couple bad breaks ND would have won the game in regulation going away.

After Riddick had his TD called back from a replay review in the first quarter, he clearly got in the next play as he was on top of another player and not really down. For some reason the play was not reviewed, if it had been that was a TD.

Agree on all points. It was called back on 2nd down I believe, I thought it should've been reviewed as well.

Point of the matter is, you make your luck. Or good teams find it easier to have luck in tough spots.

I think it may have been Michigan game when Tommy came in and threw 12 yard post down the left to goodman to extend the drive was our first good fortune of the year. The Miami receiver dropping two gimme's helped. Tuitt picking up and running that fumble back was good. There were really too many to list this season

A FG got us to overtime. Rees threw the touchdown in Notre Dame's first possession of overtime. The floater in regulation to Riddick might have been bigger ...

The play that got under me the most last year was that, like 2lakes said, we're at the goal line at the beginning of our first game against USF and Crist fumbles, which leads to absolute disaster. Then in our next game, Denard is at the goal line, 3rd and 1, 1st play of the 4th quarter, ND up 24-7. Denard tries to sneak in, fumbles the ball and the ball HITS THE GROUND THEN BOUNCES RIGHT BACK INTO HIS HANDS, whereupon he takes a few steps and scores.

God, that pissed me off!!! I still haven't gotten over that one.

Bounce any other way and the Michigan disaster of 2011 would never have happened. They would get 3 points on the next play, score becomes 24-10. They would never have tried to go in on 4th and 1 even if UM had recovered the ball. The rest is the nightmare of history.

Not sure why you guys are calling this luck...most of the examples above:

The Miami receiver dropping two gimme's helped. Tuitt picking up and running that fumble back was good.

2. Goodman's on-handed TD catch against MSU. Gave ND momentum in the game and quieted the crowd.

The floater in regulation to Riddick might have been bigger ...

think we're lucky we had Tommy Rees and I think we're lucky all the QB changes early on

the examples I just listed aren't examples of luck, that's example of skill, hardwork during practice, poor focus by the other team, and depth (Tommy Rees)

Some were lucky, like the missed FG, but don't you guys recall that Pitt still had another possession to get a TD. They got a FG instead, and our guys got the TD. No one seems to remember that our boys got the winning TD in the 3rd OT to win the game.

Not as many turnovers lucky? Our coaches put 100% focus on ball security and not throwing INTs...that's just good coaching

That is hard work and preparedness.

"Chance favors the prepared"

sure, some of the things were somewhat lucky because you do need the ball to bounce your way a few times, but like Holtz always says "the only one whining about the way the ball bounced is the loser"

Bad luck last year would be Denard's lucky as sh!t bounce at the goal line...

Uggggggggggggggg

The play that got under me the most last year was that, like 2lakes said, we're at the goal line at the beginning of our first game against USF

Looking back, the opener was an omen for a horrible season.

Personally, we had company, and company with kids. I love kids and company but like to focus during the game. My buddies kids were nuts.

The weather, emptying the stadium...the fumble. I missed when the game cut back not knowing it had been switched to the other NBC channel.

It was bad all around but we had a complete reversal this year.

Bad luck last year would be Denard's lucky as sh!t bounce at the goal line...
