We can quibble for a month about last night, but in the end, it is what it is.

However, given that Manti didn't win, what exactly would a defensive player have to do at this point to win the Heisman?

Basically, it was the perfect storm. Down year for offensive player, known name at Notre Dame, on the #1 team in the nation, leads the #1 scoring defense in the nation, 7 INT's most by a LB in a decade, led the team in tackles, great backstory, the Heisman description fits him to a T and he won every other National Player of the Year award.

I mean, if someone doing all that isn't going to win the Heisman, what would a defensive player have to do to win it? Do you actually think it is even possible at this point?

I though Suh was the best defensive player I'd seen in a long time in college, and he didn't get close to winning it. Then Te'o comes along and has a story book, Disney movie season and even he can't win it, and wasn't even all that close.

I have to think at this point, it is basically impossible for a defensive player to win.

Its not impossible for a defensive player to win the Heisman, they just have to throw, catch, or run for a ton of touchdowns as well as play lights out defense

It can't be done. They need to give another award for the defensive Heisman. Better yet, call it the Manti Te'o award.

maybe dress like scooby-doo for Halloween?

Heisman winners do it doggy style.

If Manti would have picked off pass in endzone against USC and ran it back 99 yards for a touchdown to seal the victory and spot in national title game, he would have won.

And if my aunt had balls...

In my eyes, Te'o did everything he had to do this season to win that trophy.

Question is.. Can anyone ever win the Heisman without crossing the goal line? Probably not.

Was answering the question in the thread.

I'm sorry your aunt has balls.

Thanks for your concern. It's been a tough year for shim.

For a defensive player to win the modern version of the heisman trophy he would literally have to WALK ON WATER!!__:grin:

Thats the reason why there is so little point to being as irritated as many of my pals seem to be about this.

Our team --our coach --and our two captain AAs --have all recieved PLENTY of recongnition on our wonderful season---

Now lets get the BIG ENCHILADA and call it all HISTORY!!--

aloha's

I think Te'o would have had to score a touchdown or have two or three more take aways.

I just wish preventing TDs was as highly regarded as scoring them.

This is not a new issue but one that has been around since the days of leather helmets. There is a reason that there are two awards specifically for best defensive player (Bronko Nagurski and Chuck Bednarik awards) and none for best offensive player.

We could've sold out for another Heisman and had Manti run a couple 2nd & Goal TD's. That would've been cool, but at what cost? He's a defender, through and through. Good luck to Johnny FBall, but I think Manti will be a better contributor to this world as a whole.

Understatement of the year 2012.

Getting a good set of knee pads and visiting a lot of the voters' houses comes to mind. Plus some Maalox......

It's the apples-to-oranges challenge...

The majority of voters do not respect, or know how to fairly compare, apples (D) to oranges (O).

For a D-player to win in this environment... here's my formula now

1. All that Manti did +

2. be from SEC +

3. have a highlight reel "Heisman moment" like a pick-6 to win the game... +

4. peak late in the season (game 9 or later), exposing a national champion contender and/or leading heisman candidate.

So... i blame USC... they should have been in the top 15 with Barkley leading the ship... only to lose to Manti taking one to the house in the 3rd quarter and then not letting their O get past the 50 again.

It would have to be someone with Manti's stats on the year, as well as character equal to his, with a compelling story off the field. In addition, a minimum of 2-3 touchdowns on defense, either through pick sixes or fumbles for touchdowns, but I'm thinking realistically that number's closer to a half dozen.

So yeah, it's damn near impossible.

You have to score points somehow. The Heisman is an offensive award. I will always look at it with disdain now, unless ND wins it...

unless a defesive player plays part time on offense a pure defender will never win. winning the heisman has no meaning anymore.

For a Defensive Player to win? Easy. Establish an award voted on exclusively by past and present All Americans. Limit the number of votes per team to 5 (AA's from that team can rotate), let teams who have no AA's select one former player to represent them,... and then call that award "the Heisman."
