congrats to Keivarae Russell and, on behalf of ND fans everywhere, let me apologize for all of our fretting over the CB's that opted out of ND and not giving him his proper dues. You've earned it kid and I'm looking forward to 2-3 more years of your td-saving tackles and prodigal play!

But remember - our secondary is full of bums.

No joke, at the beginning of the year, Motta may have been our best defensive back - by year's end, he might be our "worst". Admittedly, Farley playing with casts on both his hands has affected his play, so maybe not... but you get the point I hope.

The young guys have all made big strides. Not saying they'll all develop into 1st round draft picks, but these guys can play, and a kid like Russell is still figuring things out.

I thought Farley only had the one cast? What happened with the other hand?

Always had two I think. At least he did vs pitt

That really is an accomplishment. Imagine how good e will be next year and the year after. I hope he really wants to be in the secondary cause he is really good at it.

Russel's play this year is a big reason why the D stepped up. We all thought the secondary was doomed with the early injuries. Congrats to Keivarae.

NO EE and he comes in with 30 days of practice and plays BETTER then our long established senior corners from 2011---KEIVARAE IS A WUNDERKIND!---he will become something very special at ND---

Could not agree more...in a season of surprises, Keivarae is one of my most pleasant surprises! His play as a true freshman, making a position change from high school and the fact that he had so little practice time to prepare is an amazing performance.

I can't wait to watch his career develop over the coming years - his, Jackson and Farley.

Seems like yesterday when half the board was talking about how "awful" he was against Navy.

Props to Russell, Motta, B-Jax, and Farley for stepping up their game all year. Everyone doubted what they could do and they made the most of their opportunities.

Could have sworn I read on here a few weeks ago that he was not good at all...

I stand by my statement.... He's just in the right system

It would be alot different if we acually had him play real defense

P.S. Don't get me wrong i still love the job he's done and happy for him that he got recognized..

Props to Elliot too. He seems to be working well within the defensive system with all players.

Could you elaborate on your "real defense" statement?

I know you can't blame one guy for a defense(i'm going to go check his stats now) but didn't W. Virginia's D get thrashed every game? I'm looking at Joseph who was on the first team for WV.

Could you elaborate on your "real defense" statement?

He thinks every corner should play man. We play a lot of zone so he doesn't think we play real d. Sorry but he's wrong with our front seven there is no reason to play man all of the time. He probably hates the Tampa 2. No issues From me I don't like zone much but u have to play your strengths.

Amen to this. The key to this game is if we can keep both safeties deep. If we can do this and stop the run we are going to win the game.

Farley has NFL Strong Safety written all over him. Reminds me a bit of Polamalu. Tough as hell, solid tackler, and a instinctual nose for where the run is going.

as you know I've been a Russell guy as long as anybody. Its pretty "real" when we blitz and he has Robert Woods 1 on 1 or makes a good play on the ball in zone to intercept a ball intended for USC's Marqueese(sp) Lee in the SAME game. His man skills are already good, overtime they may be great, they'll get better, hes a freshman for gosh sake. He and BJax both attack the football.

I come on here and hafta read someone say ND does not play real defense Folks the sooner we realize "Neon, Deion Sanders, Revis Island," are not reality..

the more we can appreciate the 2012 Irish who play football fundamentally sound, with there scheme and for each other.

This is REAL folks,

Could you elaborate on your "real defense" statement?

Well, our corners aren't asked to do a lot. They give huge cushions, they aren't asked to play man much, nor are they asked to do bump and run. While our OLBs are asked to do a lot, our corners... not so much. Their job is typically to funnel their receivers somewhere and/or keep things in front of them.

I guess what I'm getting at is, if there's one position that hasn't been overburdened with different responsibilities, it's corner. What he's done on the fly is certainly noteworthy and unlikely, but he hasn't been asked to shut down a half of a field like Deion Sanders. And considering how our front 7 has performed, it was the right plan all along.
