Ahem....anyone else following this?

Barry Alvarez announced today that he is coming out of retirement and the warm AD office to coach the Badgers in the Rose Bowl. Why?

He has determined that he can not find a suitable replacement now so he wants to focus in the Rose Bowl and will search after!

As stated in an earlier thread...Alvarez knows first hand that D Coordinator at ND to HC at Wisconsin is great path.

My guess is that Diaco is the #1 choice but wants to coach in the National Championship game...so Alvarez is determined to get his man and is willing to wait.

If the Irish win on Jan. 7th I will have no problem with Diaco leaving.

Go Irish!!!

I agree, not going to panic, but I was just telling the guys today that if I was Diaco no way in you no where do I go to Boston College, now Wisconsin, that's another story. They have the formula for success. Lou Holtz offense and if you throw in Diaco defense....look out. Jeeez, maybe I should panic a little.

programs that are in successful times rarely do a nationwide search for successors.

My guess is Barry is 'Interviewing" his coordinators as he coaches with them.

When it comes to Diaco, I think folks are drastically underrating the importance of having some type of head coaching experience when getting a head coaching gig. Will lay even money that Martin leaves before Diaco.

I agree with this. What coaches recently have gone from coordinator to big time coaching gig lately? Muschamp is the only name that comes to the top of my head. I think, should Diaco leave for greener pastures, he goes to a smaller, less competitive school before he gets a major head coaching job like Wisky.

I read that the players asked him to coach the game.. don't really think it has anything to do with Diaco..

Interesting. Initially I was wondering if part of this was Barry just wanting to see he still had it in him to go out and win yet one more ballgame.

But if its offered to him, how does he NOT take it?

Of course it would be really tough to turn that down.

I just think Wisconsin will look to grab a head coach from a lower tier school, like Charlie Strong or the coach from Ball State, San Jose State, or Tulsa before they pursue Diaco.

If he wins, it'd make for an interesting line in his coaching resume:

2004..........

2013: 1 game coached, 1 win, 1 Rose Bowl trophy

Cool experience for the players. Sucks having your coach leave before a BCS game but having a legend like Barry Alvarez step in is a pretty awesome alternative.

And for those you in the Tweet game, check out @BeingBielema, hilarious.

...good news is he's been through 2 interviews (we know of) and wasn't selected for either....maybe he just gets really nervous haha

As great a coordinator as he is, I've heard and read that his people/media skills aren't the greatest.

1) Both the Madison and Milwaukee papers reported Alavarez was considering coaching the team immediately upon news of Bielema leaving. This was due in part of the turmoil and relatively new staff in place and the idea this brings a steady hand at the top for such an important game;

2) It is correct the Captains asked himm to do it which was the "gentle" push he needed;

3) When was the last time a new hire came in and coached his new team for a bowl game? Never??

Alvy coaching the game has little to nothing to do with getting a new hire. Just made the game a lot more interesting to watch though...1st Rose Bowl Hall of Fame Memeber to coach in the game...good for him.

Kelly coached Cincinnatti in their bowl game when he was hired there.

It's because of all star posters like you I was smart enough to add the "??" at the end! Give you credit for being sharp bright and early...did not know that.:tea:

Seriously???

Also saw that Barry interviewed someone in his hotel w/in 5 minutes of hearing the news from Bielema.

I would think Tedford would be on the short list.
