I think when the season began, we were 6 games from overtaking Michigan in the all time winning percentage category. We have gained 4 games on them and I think we just might get one more. Michigan has to play South Carolina in their bowl game. I think they get beat.

If we beat Alabama, then when we play Michigan next year it will be to move back into first place as the all time winningest team. Nobody would have believed this was possible at the beginning of this year. Let's keep this momentum going. Does anybody have the numbers for the two teams winning percentages. 2Lakes???

Also, I believe we overtook Texas in total wins and now we trail only Michigan.

i thought we were only down by 4 at the beginning of the year, but haven't been able to find that info. that would make us tied, but you might be right. either way - awesome!

Nice website. 23 National titles!!!! Alabama would claim all of them. Or USC.

We should get extra percentages for being a better school.

Guys, I'm a bit obsessed with getting this distinction back. In my lifetime I have seen at least 3 games against Michigan stolen by the refs. The worst was the one against Charlie Weis, but if it helped get him fired, so be it. Nothing against Charlie, I hope he turns it around at Kansas.

It just seems like everything is destiny and orchestrated by the Supreme Power and if it is, well, we win the national title and when we beat Michigan next year, we will be the winningest team of all time.....again!!

Michigan just took their 5th loss of the season. This thing must be getting ever so close. Can anybody look up the numbers to see where we stand in comparison to Michigan's winning percentage. 2Lakes, I bet you could figure it out for us. Maybe we catch them if we beat Bama. I know it is almost there.

As of now, Michigan is 901-315-36 and ND is 864-300-42.

ND is .7422

Michigan is .7409

We can officially claim the all time highest winning percentage.

^ I dont think that is right. Did you count ties or not?

From what I have seen. With Michigan's loss, they are at 73.44% and if ND wins the Title Game, ND will be at 73.43% I dont think we can catch them this year, but next year definitely.

Please look at my link.....I took into account ties. ND took back this title after after UM lost to O$U and ND beat U$C.

I hope you are right but we should have heard something about it. Where's 2Lakes when you need him.

still not calling it official, I have seen different on other ND sites.

I'd say.

Personally, this mark doesn't mean anything to me. If we win 8 games a year and Michigan wins 6 for the next decade, it's not like passing them would mean anything to the current state of ND football.

Recruits don't care about what program has the best win all-time %. If Vanderbilt keeps winning 9-10 games a year, they'll be the hot program and no one will care about their 100-year stretch between nine-win seasons.

I just read on Irish Illustrated that if we beat Stanford and Michigan loses to Ohio State, we take back the title of the winningest team of all time. I was thinking we would get it next year when we beat Michigan but I'm not opposed to getting it tomorrow....

OK. It's 3 a.m. and I can't sleep. Just had a thought. Once the Buckeyes kick Michigans' asss we will probably jump to number one again even before we play. Hope we don't blow it with a loss to the Trees.

Edited to show you can type asss and not have it deleted since I can't spell properly.

Looking forward to celebrating that distinction for a few short hours. ;)

BUT between the hopeful bowl game results and 2014 season (UM in shambles and us in the playoff hunt), we can tie and surpass the skunkbears.

Obviously I'd rather have the most titles in history, and Saban would need to leave Tuscaloosa (along with dozens of other miracles and a dozen years) before we hit that again.

We should get extra percentages for being a better school.

Or for playing a harder schedule.

While we were playing Oklahoma and PAC-12 South Champ ASU, they were battling with the mighty UConn Huskies and Akron Zips....

Temple and Air Force have a combined 3 wins. I wouldn't go down that road, man.

It makes me wonder, though: has a computer ever spit out teams' historic SOS -- even just based on opponents' records? I would probably be flawed but interesting.

I went and found SOS as of today. I like to use collegefootballpoll.com because it's fast and easy to find....

Anyway, ND SOS is #5. Pretty good right? I thought going down the road of Temple and Air Force would be o.k., but guess what.....Michigan's SOS was #7. Quite surprised.

FYI, Stanford's SOS is #3...probably helped by playing ND. :D

Update: Massey has ND schedule as #29 and UM as #49. :/ Going to search for lifetime SOS, probably only goes back 20 years if it exists at all.
