Here's hoping Jack tosses him and extra bundle of cash and secures him for another couple years...

...and thank the Lord that Mike Elston is his recruiter...

Let's be real here for a second....BC is a school that is "at best" a spoiler for other teams.....and occasional "not crappy" team. They are not a top tier school, have not been a top tier school (at least not that I can remember...and I am way too lazy to look), and will never be a top tier school (they are not even a top tier school in freaking Boston...).

If Diaco leaves for BC, it will be the biggest mistake of his career. I am not saying this because I want him to stay (which I really really really do)....I am saying this because going to BC is a career ender.

I just don't see BC as a career ender... how many times do you get a destination job or a top tier school as your first HC gig?

Since 97 when O'Brien took over until 2009 when Spaz took the reigns they were 96-53 that isn't complete garbage... from 99-10 they were above .500 overall each season

Mediocre program? Yea sure... but far from a career killer IMO

That "mediocre" program has handed us our fair share of pretty sizeable losses.

BC is a nice job -- not a destination, but not a MAC or Sun Belt team, either. He'll have nice exposure there, would probably get 7-9 wins a year, and establish himself as a dynamic up and comer. It would set him up nicely for a big job when one opens up.

He's a really great fit there, but I hope he sticks around. As a hypothetical, if he takes the job, who would replace him as coordinator?

BC is a crap job and you know it. Given the raises everyone is about to get, he'd likely take a pay cut and he walks into a terrible situation with a terrible roster. You're in a market that sells out one game every two years and doesn't care about you. You're in a division with Florida State and Clemson, who's second string has more talent that your first, they've never won the ACC title and only won their conference twice since joining in 2005. This would make their 5th HC since 2006.

His dream job is Iowa and Ferentz isn't gonna survive another mediocre season.

Ferentz has a 100% buyout on his contract. I saw a writer do a mockup and it would cost Iowa something like $30 million to fire Ferentz and his staff, and then include the 1st year of the new head coach and his staff.

Ferentz will be there awhile.

Ouch, just read up on it.... It's at 75%. If they fired him today, they would be on the hook for $18,846,249. He would make $2,629,704 a year til 2020. This is incredible. Where can I get job security like that? Not even Charlie Weis got that kind of buyout

Coughlin, Tom

Diaco's next job should not be a destination job... and that's why BC is so attractive. It is not an elite program, but it plays a competitive schedule.

Think Chryst at Pitt. Pitt is historically a better program, but it is about the same as BC is today.

BC is the perfect place to learn how to become a HC without the pressure of an elite or destination program. As a HC, you have to understand both sides of the ball... and more importantly, you have to manage relationships among coaches, univ. admins and players.

People need to know where you stand, and where you are going. You are everyone's boss...

You just don't learn this as a Coordinator... ask Charlie.

Kelly could be grooming Diaco to become a HC... giving him broader responsibilities, etc... but at the end of the day, you need to make the real calls, and you don't get that opportunity unless you are a HC.

My feeling is that Diaco would be well-served with another year as "Asst HC" here.. taking notes and developing himself for the HC position. Then he'll be prepared to go.

It's a good thing for your top assistants to go sometimes. If they have your coaching genes / philosophy... they are hopefully developing new coaches too, who may come to mothership as a position coach or coordinator.

It's the coaching tree... Rockne had a profound influence on coaching philosophy --> through Leahy, Lombardi... etc.. cascading to even Bear Bryant.

As for dream jobs, I don't know if Iowa is his dream job anymore... or if it ever was... ND could be though.

ND is also a dream job for Martin, and he's had the HC experience.

When it is time for Kelly to go, it would be nice to know there is a pool of candidates out there who are capable and desiring of coming back to the bend.

Leahy, Frank

I see Akron as a crap job. I see Bowling Green as a crap job.

BC won the ACC Coastal as recently as 2008 and 2009 and were one game away from Orange Bowl berths in both of those years. Boston College has proven that with the right guy in charge, you can win games there. They succeeded when they brought tough, disciplined recruits in, and Diaco would energize kids to at least consider BC. And they were never scoring top 50 players anyways, so it's not like you need to recruit highly regarded players to win there.

You're making it out to be a barren wasteland, and it's not. Diaco would not be taking a pay cut, as he'll probably get $1.5 - 2.0M to coach at Chestnut Hill (and I highly doubt he makes that at ND). I understand they're our rivals, but man, it's not like he's taking over Savannah State if he accepts the job.

5th HC? Are you counting O'Briens last season? and counting Spaz twice?... Jagodzinski got himself fired by interviewing with an NFL team against BC's wishes.

Taking a destination job as your first gig unless you have been overly groomed gets you to Kansas...

BC is a crap job and you know it.

Four of our greatest coaches came from Boston College, Northwestern, Minnesota and Cincinatti, so I mean, I'm not sure what you are trying to say here.

You're acting like this is some final destination for the man.

Cry out loud, Urban left us for Bowling Green and then went to Utah before landing his destination job at Florida.

Nick Saban's first job was a mediocre (at that level) Toledo job before moving onto Michigan State, which at the time hadn't had a winning season in years and were way down on the Bog 10 pecking order AND on probation.

Good coaches usually do well, where ever.

And I highly doubt if Bob gets the BC job that will be his career destination.

I'm sorry but I think you're really over-stating the attractiveness of the BC program here. Yeah, you can win some games but you will always lose the ACC championship to one of the southern teams like Clemson and the Florida teams. Their most successful coach of the last 25 years happens to be a HOF football coach who wins big wherever he goes. You have no natural recruiting base and a questionable fan base, none of which is helped by the teams you play in your conference. Facilities kinda suck too. I have not seen any evidence that ACC membership has elevated that program at all. Hell, O'Brien left BC to take the NCST job! Not a "destination" school at all not to mention it's in the same bloody conference as BC!! That there should tell us all we need to know...

BC can recruit NJ and PA... NJ has good Ball. Don Bosco has a pipeline to BC. Moreover, Diaco is from NJ. Diaco's own star power and charisma will get some kids from the Carolinas... He has standing in the midwest (he's known)... and he should be able to get some kids who are itchy to check out the East Coast.

Build D first... and the O will follow.

Do a few things with Belicheck / Patriots... heads will turn.

He won't make it a national powerhouse, but he could be competitive in the ACC... and definitely go bowling. If Kelly could do it an Cinci... which was NOWHERESVILLE in college football.. Diaco can be competitive at BC (if he were to eventually leave... don't think he'll go now though).

The point is to develop as HC...
