hawaiiirish
I thought it would be fun to give your five--- The question is most impactful--not necessarily the five best---so many great candidates its easy to give the top ten or 15 --top 5 is tricky-- for me #1)-manti teo--hesiman candidate 100 takles--7 picks--a freaking inspiration to the team--no question here #2)-Louis Nix---just an unbelievable force-the ND version of vince wolfolk--those goaline stands he was the "immovable force"---the major reason you just can't run at us-- #3)-Everett Golson--just a youngster that has alot more to show us -his stats were OK for a rookie--but his IMPACT was simply ENORMOUS IMHO-----His running---His (theo game) against PITT---His accurate passes and deep passes---his mobility to extend and make plays--NO WAY WE WOULD BE UNDEFEAED WITHOUT GOLSON-- #4)--Theo Riddick---1250 yards--steady yards--lots of critical third down runs & catches--the grease for the offense all year #5)---Keivarae Russell---To me it is nothing short of amazing to see this TRUE FROSH play everygame--virtually every down--make hardly any mistakes---make some shrewd penalties---show the instincts of a veteran , shore up the teams BIGGEST VULNERABLITY and turn it into a strength---Not sure we could have made it unscathed without keivarae filling that role --- SO MANY GUYS I WOULD LIKE TO ADD---but this is my feeling on the biggest impacts---whats yours? aloha's go irish! Synoptico
Like you list but would have Tuitt at 5 instead.
NYNDIRISH723
It is so difficult to leave a guy like Eifert off that list. Although he commanded a lot of double teams on a team without a lot of viable threats at receiver, Eifert had another great year. Making a list for a team like this is nearly impossible. We are where we are because everyone contributed in so many ways. Edited November 25, 2012 by NYNDIRISH723
CristTheRedeemer
Te'o - Self-explanatory. Motta - His leadership in the secondary is invaluable. He's been outstanding with Slaughter out. Martin - The rock of our OL. Nix - The most important player on the defense, IMO. Golson - Single-handedly won the game vs. Pittsburgh and has improved in leaps and bounds all season. Strong QB play was what prevented us from making the BCS last year.

I think the offensive line as a five man unit, playing virtually every snap together without any injury, was absolutely critical...no way Golson or Theo have the seasons they do without that type of continuity and performance... That being said I don't think I can single out one specific offensive lineman that has individually had more of an impact than any of the 5 individuals you listed...but if we take the offensive line as a unit (I know, I'm breaking the rules) I think I put them at #
Rattlesnake
1. Te'o 2. Nix 3. Russell 4. EG 5. TE Hate to leave Tuitt, Wood, and Theo off.
artfernisanass
obviously any list like this begins and ends with manti. but i am glad you put both #6's on your list hawaii - and i whole-heartedly agree! Russell showed the savvy (and confidence!) of a true veteran on that goal line stand with those two very shrewd penalties (not to mention the other shrewd penalty on the long ball). what makes this all the more remarkable is that he is 1) a true freshman, and 2) a converted running back! and theo's performance last night...does anything even need to be said?! was there any doubt who would get the game ball from kelly last night?! both of them have been incredibly important - and not just last night - but all year! i think arguments can be made for the other spots, but those three definitely belong in the top 5 most important and impactful players - at least in my book. Rocketsan
In no particular order: - Te'o - Z. Martin - Eifert - Riddick - Brindza
corysold
Wow, it might be tough to stop at 10. 1. Te'o. Pretty easy. 2. Golson. Might be the reason ND wins the title. 3. Eifert. Offense getting good enough to win title as he gets more involved. Not a coincidence. 4. Nix. Te'o isn't Te'o without Big Lou up front. 5. Tuitt. Defense has carried this team and his consistent presence has protected secondary a bit.
yikityyakirish
When I just tried to make my top 5 I finally realized how much talent we have...these were all the guys that deserve at least mention of being an impact player 1) Golson 2) Riddick 3) Wood 4) Atkinson III 5) Eifert 6) Jones 7) Martin Cave 9) Tuitt 10) Nix 11) KLM 12) Shembo 13) Manti 14) Spond 15) Motta 16) Farley 17) Jackson 18) Russell We're too good

Found myself being disappointed with him a few times this season.

corysold
Think I need to swap Brindza for Golson... That is sort of the problem no? All Brindza did is make a game winner, 3-4 game clinchers and 2-3 game extenders in regulation/OT. Pretty important, yet he barely makes the top 5, if at all. Green Goblin
1) Te'o 2) Brindza 3) Golson 4) Tommy Rees 5) Nix 6) Eifert/Riddick/Wood/Russell Not trying to be outrageous with Tommy there but I sincerely believe without him we'd have lost one of Michigan or Purdue since this season is about being undefeated -- his relatively small contribution was huge.
