corysold
...the first one you've ever watched, as an invested fan of Notre Dame, where a win results in playing for the national title? It is for me. I was alive in '93 and '88, but was pretty young and a casual fan. I'd guess it was somewhere around '98 or '99 that I really became invested as a fan of ND. So this will be the first time I've ever watched Notre Dame play a game where the end result directly determines if they play for a National Title or not. I'm pretty stoked. nremdn
I was pretty young in '93, but that game still to this day breaks my heart. That game started the torture of being a ND fan for me, but I have never waivered. So I guess this will be my second, another result like '93 may have a permanent mental impact on me LOL. We have all suffered for far too long....
SanDiegoIrish
So this will be the first time I've ever watched Notre Dame play a game where the end result directly determines if they play for a National Title or not. I'm pretty stoked. Same here. I was 10 in '93, so I don't remember anything there. I guess growing up a Cubs and ND fan, I've been brought up to expect disappointment. I'm hoping this year will be different (on the ND side at least) but I'm already so happy with the way this season has gone.
bklyn_irish
yeah, i was 10 in 93 as well. while i grew up going to games, i definitely didn't start really loving ND football until high school. and i didn't become an obsessive message board reading fan until i graduated college and had much more time on my hands... very excited for this game. smaster
Those of you who got turned on to the Irish after 93 are indeed the truest fans. How you can suffer disappointment upon disappointment like that -- without the warm feelings of yesteryear -- is beyond me. I still remember walking into the stadium that November day thinking, "I get to watch the #1 team play today," only to leave with no stomach. Everything changed for ND from that day on...until perhaps NOW!
VCDomer
It was 1977 for me. Watching Bitter Joe Montana in the Cotton Bowl versus Texas. It was an Epic Game. Same year that they donned the green jerseys in a surprise before the U$C game.
cameroncrazy
I wasn't even quite a year old when we lost to BC in 93, but it's amazing to finally see them in the hunt for one. I'm still in disbelief at this whole season.
Franco
yup, same for me...I was 10 in 1993 and I didn't become a fan till I 1996 (First year at Notre Dame High School, Sherman Oaks) so I never really got to see a year like this
SDIrishFan
My first ND memory was the Orange Bowl "Phantom Clip" game against Colorado. That was when I knew I was a fan that I was heart broken after that play. Not exactly to be playing for a national title, but close.
Synoptico
Same here. I was 10 in '93, so I don't remember anything there. I'm hoping this year will be different (on the ND side at least) but I'm already so happy with the way this season has gone. As a Cleveland native, a browns fan (who left when I was in high school), a Cavs Fan (LeBron), and Indians Fan (one out away), I completely agree with this feeling. tj4ndirish
I was 9 in 77, so I wasn't a raging fan then (I guess because I can't throw out major stats and defensive schemes and offensive plays like many of you, I'm still not considered a raging fan). I started working for the State of Ohio in November '93 and boy did I hear it. And thus, began my hate for the Suckeyes (yes, high schoolish again). Rocketsan
'88 for me. 1993 I remember watching in in my university dorm and...today I still can't believe the dream was smashed. Think that's why Saturday is so important...
TDUB
The 88' USC game was one of the first games I remember watching although I was so young it didn't mean much to me at the time. I was in 5th grade for the 93 FSU/BC games, and had become completely obsessed with ND football. I'll never forget the day they lost to B.C.; I had a hockey game so I didn't get to watch the second half. When I came off the ice my dad's face was as white as a ghost when he broke the news to me they lost. I cried the whole ride home. Man it has been a long road back... AtLeastMySisWasIrish
'73 Sugar Bowl beating 'Bama for me. Maybe if it all works out and we play 'Bama in the NC, I can be the DD lucky charm...2 for 2... GO #1 IRISH!
GoldenDome89
I was only 4 in '93 so I don't remember that...but the first ND football memory I can distinctly remember was when ND kicked a game winning FG against Texas, I remember not understanding why but my Dad was going absolutely nuts so I was just running around screaming...I had to have been only 6 or
NYNDIRISH723
I was born in 1989 and have been a die hard fan since Willingham's last year. There was so much excitement when Weis arrived but there were so many gut wrenching awful moments whether they be the 3-9 season, losing to Syracuse in 08, becoming Navy's whipping boy, and the disappointing 6-6 season to close out his tenure. There was some good that came from Kelly's first 2 years such as beating USC, but a lot of bad too like losing to Tulsa and last years turnover fest of a season. So needless to say, this is my first opportunity to see the Irish earn the right to play for a National Championship game. This season has brought me so much joy and excitement, and something tells me that its going to end well. GO IRISH!
MantyIrish
17 yo in 1988 22 yo in 1993 (serving in Navy) Lifelong fan, went to first game in 88 (Miami with my Dad) (Prior to 88, my high school coach came to my school from Moeller when Faust went to ND, we got all kinds of neat access things in the summer, walked on field, sat in assembly room, weight room, tunnel, locker room etc...) Broken hearted after BC game in 93 (was in the Navy and really heard about it from two Boston guys and a Philly guy in my group) I remember where I was when it went down....doing laundry and watching it on the TV there. ugh. Words cannot even describe how I am feeling this week. Man oh man. Go IRISH!!!!! Edited November 20, 2012 by MantyIrish
ColinKSU
It is for me. I'm 27. I don't remember the 1988 title season and I only have foggy memories of 1993. Also, I'm terrified.
hawaiiirish
---This will be at least the SIXTH__ouch__time for me---i say at least because those were all the games we WON in this situation except for 93----there probably were a couple of others that we lost beyond 93 BC---we did have some other one loss seasons but i just can't say i can remember exactly other times--the one loss may have been too early to be a clear national title at stake--- So thats 66---MSU/USC both fall into this category --------73--miami --44-0 in the orange bowl to set up the ARA VS BEAR BRYANT TITLE --------77---the montana --------88---the game before WEST VIRGINA TITLE was USC again --------93--of course that still is upsetting---but this season is soothing that a bit------- aloha's go irish!
