Gunner Kiel

I will be absolutely shocked if he is wearing an Irish jersey next September. I know people get frustrated when posters try to analyze people from what they see on t.v., however - I'm doing it.

If anyone saw him at the pep rally he looked so disillusioned and uninterested in everything that was happening. Even on the sideline during the game he looked out of place.

Wonder if reality is setting in that he may not be sniffing the field as soon as he'd like...

Which sucks because honestly, any QB at ND should know they can play at any time. He'll be number 2 on the depth chart and would probably get reps even if EG continues to light up the field. BK seems to enjoy having two game-ready QB's. I hope he realizes that and sticks it out.

I didn't see that on the sideline...imo he looks like a Freshman QB. If he is as good as the whispers have been about his play on the scout team he will have a shot...nothing wrong with competition and every spot. The staff has been pretty good with fostering it.

My guess is he sticks around...he will be #3 next year...Tommy Legend will stay as the "closer"...with Hendricks moving on or moving to RB...lol

nah, rocketsan has a point, though I do not agree with his "observations" of the pep rally and gametime. Gunner has to be thinking about his future and how does a coach justify replacing a possible 12-0 starting QB who has 3 years left to play. The difference is that Golson knows his chances of going to the NFL are slim to none, no matter what happens, but Kiel is obviously a prime candidate of going to the NFL. I cant see Gunner staying too long and not building up his stats for the NFL scouts.

This is kind of selfish, but I think it would benefit everyone involved... Gunner transfers to IU, has a stellar career and goes to the NFL. IU is getting better, IU has a good class (for them) coming in. That is kind of my dream right now. As for the #2 for ND, keep Rees as the #2 unless Hendrix does better, redshirt Zaire. Then in 2014. Golson #1 and Zaire #2... Zaire will still have two years to be the starter at Notre Dame.

Its tough watching the QB position with these guys. Everyone cannot be happy because only one QB plays at a time and its not a position that you can substitute regularly. People will transfer at the QB position all the time. As much as I like the kids we have on our roster at the QB position, I highly doubt all 3 of (Golson, Kiel, and Zaire) will graduate from ND, and the cycle will continue if Kelly gets a QB every year, its just a part of college football.

As noted about Hendrix, he is probably ok with riding the pine as he is getting pre-med taken care of at ND. Unless he really thinks he has a shot at going pro, I don't really see him transferring.

I think he sticks around. He might've gotten to play at LSU by now. Golson, by no means, has a lock on that spot. He's streaky and has his problems too. If Kiel sticks it out then he will end up playing. Also, Kiel is the only other guy who has a similar skill set to Golson. I think Kiel is pretty good at reading defenses and have heard he has done very well in scout team. He may have had a test Friday morning and was tired. Who knows but I doubt he bolts.

Well, prepare to be shocked. Next year, Gunner will be number two, get tons of playing time during the year, being allowed to develop as quickly and efficiently as possible with as little pressure as possible. BK would love nothing more than to work Gunner into the rotation slowly, as Gunner offers dimensions to BK's plans in ways that Golson doesn't. Both of them are still very much works in progress and each offers their own specific opportunities that Kelly can develop and exploit.

As I've said before, BK loves to work with more than one qb if he's got the right qbs to work with and for the first time at ND, he's starting to build that stable the way he wants it to be built. Next year should be heaven for him with Golson, Gunner and Zaire in tow.

And, believe me, Golson knows it and supports it, Gunner already knows it and supports it (and Zaire will know it and support it as well in his red shirt year and beyond). Now that BK has given the offense to Martin so that he can focus on the qbs, you can already see what has happened to the changing relationships between the qbs.

The relationship between Golson and Tommy has been transformed into one of big brother and little brother, which has helped both immensely and is of no small significance. That relationship is not going to change, it will only get stronger and deeper. Under Kelly's close guidance, there have been no negative competitive animosities built up between the two. Quite the contrary, after graduation, Tommy is now talking openly about going into coaching because of this experience (I wouldn't be at all surprised if he winds up as a graduate asst coach under Kelly).

As with the rest of the team, Kelly is building a closely knit band of brothers that help and support each other. That is only going to make the Kiel integration easier and more successful (btw, as far as Hendrix is concerned, the writing has been on the wall for him for quite some time. If anyone was going to transfer it would have been Andrew. But he is pre med and is getting a free ride at one of the best institutions in America, loves the school and isn't going anywhere. And it ain't all that bad being low man on the totem pole on the Number One team in the country).

All of which doesn't mean that next year (and beyond) is going to be a merry-go-round with everyone eventually getting a third of the action. At this point and for the foreseeable future, EG is the starting quarterback. Period. At the same time, BK certainly recognizes that everyone needs their own pace, responsibilities and schedule, including Kelly himself and his plans for the development of his spread. And everyone will feel their need and their importance well met as he figures this all out.

Of course, these are highly competitive and competent young kids, so they'll always have their personal share of bumps in the road. But as BK enters his fourth year at the helm, he seems far more able to handle this balance because of the unique ND experiences, responsibilities and workload he's already had to face. And, of course, because of his success.

Undoubtedly, all this presupposes no major injuries to the qbs. But if, god forbid, such a situation strikes, the more developed the qb corps, the easier even that problem is to solve.
