97domer
How long will it take them to get the #1 sign lit up above Grace Hall? Over the past few weeks, I was telling myself as much as everyone else not to worry about the undefeateds, but I never expected this! 97domer
Also, if anyone on campus could snap me a photo, I'd appreciate it. Let's just plan on that sticking up there a little longer than my Freshman, 1993 season!

nd1989
I think I need to drive down to take a picture of it. It's been a long time.
TexasDomer
I've been lurking on this board for years now, and finally had to join. My first semester, the freshmen in my section at Grace Hall had to light the #1 sign every night when we held that rank.... and it's a very fond memory lighting up the sign for all to see every week that season (except for one week.... darn you, Miami!) It's been a long time, but I've been waiting to see that sign lit again.

corysold
Could someone explain this tradition, for some of us younger fans who haven't experienced it?
nd1989
Could someone explain this tradition, for some of us younger fans who haven't experienced it? It's a #1 sign on top of grace hall that's lit up. I didn't know it was freshman that lit it, but it was on top of grace and it would be lit up at night, whenever we were #1. I thought when I was there it was a banner I think and then it switched later to lights, but I don't remember when. Maybe it was a banner in 88 and then 89 it went to lights, or something like that. smaster
From 1993 been too long Ah, what a wonderful (6-day) memory, Gettysburg. Thanks so much for that. Cory, what you just read is correct: any time Notre Dame is #1 in the polls (previously AP but now presumably BCS), a huge "#1" is lit up on the top of Grace Hall. In November '93, the students of Grace proudly turned it on again. As we all know, that hall's electric bill didn't exactly skyrocket thanks to BC. Now that Grace Hall is the Development building, do administrators and priests need to climb up and light it? I'd love a pic of that. TexasDomer
I'm sure the link won't automatically attach, as I am new, but the Notre Dame Magazine website says this about the #1 sign: "When illuminated, the 8-foot-tall “1” sign perched atop its roof distinguishes Grace from neighboring Flanner tower. The sign, originally placed outside Moreau Seminary after the 1973 championship football season, now remains lit so long as any Irish sports team is ranked No. 1." There is also a photo of it lit on the webpage. http://magazine.nd.edu/news/10011/ Looks like everyone else is waiting for it as well: http://www.wsbt.com/news/wsbt-nd-campus-celebrates-win-waits-for-1-sign-to-illuminate-20121117,0,7902982.story

Jersey Irish
Light it up and be proud! I was among the first residents of Grace Hall in 1970 when it opened as Notre Dame's first high-rise dormitory.
