IRISH812
Listening to xm 91 college sports (free trial til the 27th btw)....they said Brian Kelly had a good conversation with Hand who is the #1 recruit in the nation next year playing DE. http://247sports.com/Player/DaShawn-Hand-16094 He was supposed to be a VT lean but they have been disappointing this year....looks like we might at least be in play
NDhoosier
The day we get the #1 Dlineman in the land will be the day the world ends... He will end up in the SEC... like they always do. Having said that, its noteworthy because at least the kid is listening to ND.

Lemming was talking the other day that after this incoming class, assuming it stays as is, ND will finally have the depth to start to go HARD after SERIOUS difference-makers or as he called them "#1 draft pick" guys. Holtz did it and he thinks BK and staff can do it. That has been my (very) slight concern with BK and staff so far in that they have not really brought in a Top 5 recruit like Jimmy or Manti yet. I agree with Lemming that they now have a real chance to do so and TRULY compete year-in and year-out for the NC...

Can we please take off our shamrock-colored glasses here? Yes, Tuiit was a great get and appears to be on his way toward a Top 5 draft pick but neither of those guys were ranked like Manti and Jimmy. We NEED those kids cuz Ala., SC, etc are getting them.

I'm confused. Jaylon is top 5 on nearly every service. They 247 composite has him as the #3 overall player in the class every site has him as the #1 OLB. He's ranked higher than Manti was on many services. Rivals had Manti as the #12 player overall and #2 ILB. It has Jaylon #3. The 247 composite has/had Manti at #4, Jaylon is the #3 player by that measure. So Jaylon is actually ranked as a better prospect than Manti at this point. davislove
I heard something about this kid a week or so ago. I glanced at the school he goes to and immediately thought it was the same school we've been raiding the last few cycles. I was on cloud 9 for a few days until I took a second look. Yes, Tuiit was a great get and appears to be on his way toward a Top 5 draft pick but neither of those guys were ranked like Manti and Jimmy. We NEED those kids cuz Ala., SC, etc are getting them. seriously? u don't think Jaylon is a top 5 player coming in? many people who have seen him have said he might be the best OLB prospect to come out in 5-10 years (even Farrell said this and he has no love loss for ND)...that kid is an elite athlete with pass rushing AND coverage skills...every single site has him as a top 5 player w/ the exception of ESPN who has him at #9 so i'm not quite sure what to tell you about him but i guess we just agree to disagree then and while true that Tuitt wasn't rated as high as Jimmy or Manti, i'm not quite sure why that even matters...rankings are fun to talk about but all sites miss on some guys (and yes, they get some guys right like Manti and Jimmy) and it's incredibly clear that they ALL UNDERRATED Tuitt...i could care less if they ranked him #90 (like ESPN did), the kid is producing at a top 5 level and that's far more important than some useless ranking that's no guarantee of college success so in the end, ur argument makes no sense. You say BK hasn't recruited a top elite level guy according to the rankings yet we have a top 5 player in this very class in Jaylon which you refuse to recognize because i guess you don't think he's very good and then we have a guy on our team who wasn't rated top 5 but is producing at a top 5 level but that doesn't matter because he wasn't rated in the top 5 coming out of HS

In the end, while elite players are needed, I think the list really needs to be opened up to the top 10-20 or so, who I would still consider elite. Going by the 247 composite, ND has gotten more top 5 players since 2007 than Alabama has, 3-2. The difference is, Alabama is getting 3-4 top 20 players a year and another 4-5 from 21-100. That is what ND has lacked. They've gotten the top end elite player, Floyd, Te'o, Clausen, but they don't back him up with 4-5 more on the cusp of elite player. Hopefully that is changing as ND has more top 100 type guys this year than most. I'd rather have 5 top 50 guys than 1 top 5 guy and a bunch of non-100's. thiazi
First off I'd like to thank this thread in particular for finally getting me to stop being a lurker and to register. Because there are like 99 absurd, incorrect comments in this one thread. Second, Clowney went to (and is still at) South Carolina, an SEC school. Third, Jaylon Smith is a consensus top 5 player nationally. He's ranked 3rd by Rivals, 9th by ESPN, 5th by 247, and 6th by Scout. How someone could be a regular reader and poster in a Notre Dame recruiting forum and not seem to have any of this - could think Smith was some local nobody or hometown discount type player, rather than a national stud - is beyond me. He's a bigger get than Te'o. Fourth, Kelly has nothing to prove about getting elite players, especially on defense. Apparently several people in this thread (including the same genius who thought Jaylon Smith was a scrub) missed the 2011 recruiting class. Seriously. It really honestly reads like 2011 just never happened. Kelly ALREADY went and got the kind of d-linemen the top SEC schools get. It was a big story at the time. What did you think Tuitt, Lynch and Ishaq WERE? Those were 5-star recruits on multiple services each. Be better than this. Or, if you're going to be ignorant, please let there be other posters who will call the people on their ignorance and make them accountable. You may think you have no influence and it doesn't matter how ignorant you are, but that's not true. Messageboards = media, these days. A nonsense thread like this - by fans who supposedly know their team better than national media would - ends up continuing nonsense narratives about ND can't get the d-linemen to compete with the SEC schools. And it IS nonsense, which you'd know if you paid attention, or bothered to know what you were talking about before you posted about it. If you don't know something, it's fine to just not say anything.

Domer Dude
Rivals Manti #12 Jaylon #3 Scout Manti #6 Jaylon #6 ESPN Manti #2 Jaylon #9 247 Manti #9 Jaylon #5 I love Manti but Jaylon is an elite stud no matter what kind messed up glasses you are wearing. Jaylon will make his mark in his own way - they are both elite (one proven the other not). Manti is once in generation leader as well. SmittyisIrish4ever
Jaylon is clearly a top 5 talent so I'm not sure what that argument was. Kelly has seemed to get a few top 10 guys already with not so good regular season records. I believe ESPN had Neal rated as the #7 overall player and #1 ATH in last year's class. Many thought Gunner to be the top QB in last year's class. Tuitt had a 5* rating, as did Ishaq I believe. Now that Kelly has made this team his, and we're humming right along, I expect us to be in the mix every year for a 1-8 ranked recruiting class that includes a few of the top 20 guys. ESPN does not have Jaylon that high and they did have Manti that high. in fact, I believe ESPN has had the most accurate rankings the last 4 years. Manti was number 2 behind Barkley. Hmm, seems ESPN got that right! Yet you conveniently leave ESPN out. Jaylon is a Top 10 player but he's not the prospect Manti or Jimmy were PERIOD. And 24/7 didn't even exist 4 years ago, did they?? Instead of just being guilty of one mortal debate sin (talking confidently about something you know nothing about), you're now committing a second (failing to admit you were wrong when you have been proven wrong). How about you quit while you're behind?
