What exactly is a "true fan"?

I haven't been around a lot the last few days, but I bet they feel like they are more of a fan than most people they talk to or read stuff from on this forum.

We are all passionate on this forum. I don't think I've seen anyone on here that I wouldn't consider a true ND fan.

A non-true ND fan is the guy in broadripple in a ND sweater that commented on my ND football player costume and talked to me about ND football without actually watching the game. I didn't say anything mean to him.. But when I walked away I thought, why and the hell did he go out to a bar on Halloween instead of watch this game?

I don't publicly comment on Bandwagon fans very often, but I do keep tabs silently to myself when someone comes up and talks to me about ND football.

I think you can be less of a fan than most people on this forum and still be a true ND fan. You don't necessarily have to bleed it, but if you don't watch every game that you have a chance to then I'd consider you a bandwagoner.

My 2 cents

Keep seeing reference to being a "true Notre Dame fan". What does that mean exactly?

To some here it is to be blind and clueless when talking about what is really going on with the team compared to the fantasy in their heads. Some of us make comments based on what we actually see or believe will happen on Saturday and get bashed for it. I am glad that we are undefeated and think we are hitting a home run in recruiting but also believe we will get torched by Oregon and Alabama. That doesn't make us a bad team nor does it mean we shouldn't be in a BCS bowl but we have not shown we deserve any real national championship talk. I believe Brian Kelly is the man for the job here and if the players and fans believe in what he is doing then this program can be a regular again in the major bowl talk every year but even though we are doing well this year we have a long way to go.

True fandom is loyally and, with some degree of diligence, following and favoring a team regardless of how good they are, and in turn having an emotional stake in both the outcome and the process of a game based on some preconceived principles of what that team embodies and represents.

For the sake of discussion, I'd like to point out that your "realism" can seem waivering to the "blind and ignorant". Thereby classifying you as not a true fan.

I am not taking a stance either way, but personalities are very dynamic and two people can be right and wrong at the same time.

While I'll agree that most of the "blind and ignorant" are annoying, I enjoy their enthusiasm in moderation.

A true fan comes in all different types & shapes --nice guys, nasty guys, happy guys, melancholy guys, smart guys, stupid guys, guys & gals of every stripe--

But TRUE FANS vs fairweather fans all have one set of characteristics and values that connect them---

They are ND fans season in- season out--they care about the team season in -season out---they may by cheerleaders or chronic critics it doesn't matter a wit---they have JOY when ND wins and they have PAIN when ND loses.

aloha's go irish!

I think you need at least 2,500 posts to be a "true fan".

Anything short of that and you are just a poser.

That's as good an explanation as any.

A true Notre Dame fan treated every game in 2007 the same as every game this season.

Amen to this^^^^! That year was brutal, but I couldn't walk away from the lads no matter how bad it got. For me every season since Lou left, with a couple exceptions like '05-'06, has been tough.

I was in the Rose Bowl for ND's first win that season. After that win ND was 1-5 they lost the next 4.

I would say a true fan is someone that stays with the team threw good and bad.

You love what something stands for. Agree with the ideals, mission and slogans, get sick at the thought of the team losing. Can't stomach the thought of picking against the team. Learn all you can about it. Be your friends source of information.

A loss makes it the worst day of the year, at least until your family gives you a hug.

A true fan sticks with their team through thick and thin, regardless of how well they perform over the course of months or even years. A true fan is allowed moments of doubt, especially when the results over the course of time justify that doubt.

A true fan is allowed moments of negativity when things don't go as expected. A true fan is allowed moments of exuberance when their team's performance exceeds expectations or they prevail when the results were in doubt and all hope seems to have been lost and the outlook was negative.

In the end, a true fan(As it applies to college sports), whether they're a current student, an alumnus or a supporter is someone that will ride with their team through the good and the bad until they're put in the ground.

IMO, a true fan is a fan that watches or tracks every game no matter how the team is doing. They are as proud of a 8-4 team as they are of a 12-0 team. They stand by the college and the team, no matter how well or poorly they are doing.

There is a guy at my work that every week, wears a ND shirt. When I first saw this, I thought, "Cool another brother in arms." I asked him if he was a fan and he tells me, "Not really. I bought it cause my last boss was a ND fan." This is a new job and this tool still wears it every week. I don't know why, but I can't stand this guy since he said that. I hate ND posers. That is another definition of a 'true fan.' Someone that can't stand posers.

I'll add to this.................a fan comes back year after year after year of let down seasons with a renewed sense of this year is the year. GO Cub.....I mean GO IRISH!!!!!!
