...what pieces is ND missing, not so much this season, but moving forward?

Coaching - Check. It can't be understated that Kelly has a team with a freshman QB, a young secondary and inexperience at WR 8-0 against a tough schedule. Diaco has given up 6 1st quarter points this year, and 7 3rd quarter points. That is coaching. Elliott has the secondary playing well. The O-Line is coming along. ND has great coaching right now.

Strength in the trenches - Almost check. ND has an amazing D-Line right now. Nix and Tuitt are among the best in the nation. The depth is their with guys like Day, Kona, Springmann. Bringing in some talented recruits. This should continue to be a strength. O-Line has been playing better. Not sure they are quite elite yet. Need some more depth at all 5 spots. Great recruiting class should start to shore that up.

Linebackers - Check. Between having the best in the nation now, plus the best in the nation coming in, along with a deep class, LB should be elite in the future as well.

Defensive backfield - Too early to say. Though they've played well this year, I'm not ready to say they are ready to stand on their own yet. The young guys back there have shown promise though. A lockdown corner would be the next step. Is that guy on the roster? I don't know. Is he coming? I also don't know. At safety, a ball-hawking, physical safety would take this defense to the next level. Again, don't know if I see that elite Safety on the current roster moving forward. Motta has been good. Farley's played well. But neither jump out to me as gamechangers. Could Redfield be that guy?

Offensive playmakers - Just short of check. We'd seemingly have all the pieces a team would need. Fast WR's. Bigger WR's. Shifty WR. Bigger backs. Shiftier backs. Elite TE's. The only reason I can't go fully check yet is they haven't been fully utilized yet. I think the pieces are all there, but need to see for sure. But between Daniels, Neal, Brown, TJ, Wood, Carlisle, GAIII, Ferguson, plus guys coming in you'd think you can find 3-4 big time playmakers.

QB - Almost check. Arguably the most important piece. Has Golson shown enough to be "the guy". In spurts yes, but he needs to show more consistency obviously. However, if he can't, the #1 QB in his class is next. If he can't, a top 5 spread QB is after him. ND should be set here

So in summary, a few elite DB's, a few proven playmakers on O, the development of the O-Line depth and finishing development at QB to me are really all that stand in the way of ND going from "Wow, that's a great team" to "Umm, I don't know if these guys can be beat."

Kelly's game plan is no big breaks for the other team. No long plays, no turnovers, no allowing fake punts and field goals - which means less blocking and more covering on punt returns.

Officials need to stop people from running down field who are not eligible on punts.

Special teams in general. I know Tausch is hurt, but he wasn't really knocking it dead before his injury either. I like the coverage, we are not giving up big returns on kick offs or punts, but we all want returns, consistant field goals (At least make the freaking chip shots), and some kicks out the back of the end zone against teams with dangerous return men (FWIW).

Also, jury is out on TEs (Post Eifert) and O-line, we will see over the next couple years if our new coaches for those positions are getting it done.

Special teams coach

Proven elite number one receiver

Jumbotron and field turf

I think Davaris Daniels is going to take care of number 2 for you, I see a lot of potential in this kid.

Let me add to my list though:

1. One of the ridiculous highly recruited SEC guys like Jadaveon Clowney, just to have the next Te'oesque recruiting coup.

Well, I believe that a successful football program revolves around depth.

We have it at QB, OL, TE, LB, and DL. It's somewhat lacking/remains to be seen in the secondary and among our WRs.

With the secondary, KeiVarae and Farley are showing they can do big things and we have Kinlaw and Cole Luke coming in (who will be studs), and Devin Butler, who has very solid potential. If Slaughter can come back next year... WOW! At the WR position, we have Corey Robinson, Will Fuller, and James Onwalu coming in. No sure-fire elite guys, but DvD could take that title soon. If we could get Demarcus Robinson, that would be huge for us.

The other issue for a successful program is having elite talent. We have it for sure TE, LB, and DL. I think that, as the season has progressed, we have it at QB also. EG just needs to show he can do it consistently now. I would consider our OL a level below elite, but it's very solid with elite rising players.

Honestly, as long as we keep winning and recruiting well, we are 2 years from being elite and deep at every position on the field. Tip of the hat to the source of the success: the coaches. CBK, Diaco, Elliot, Martin, Longo and Co. have been absolutely marvelous bringing this program back.

Gotta give Bennett Jackson and Nicky Baratti some love too, they have performed well. I would like to see some elite talent as well. I love a coach who can develop under the radar players, but I also like to see Notre Dame knock it out of the park and win some big recruiting battles.

Zeke has been nominated as one of the best safeties this season. I think we are missing the shutdown corner, i like taller linebackers, a QB combination of Tommy and Golson and the really big and fast running back for every down (Eric Dickerson). I also think we are missing one HUGE athlete on the O-line. The cool thing is that we are winning and I think these current guys have something that a lot of our teams have lacked for the last 20 years and that's swagger and testosterone fueled confidence. They crave contact like no other ND team in 20-25 years. I will say that ND is hands down the best tackling team in college football.

Zeke has been impressive this year, I think maybe his talent was overshadowed by Hayseed. Either way he is having a great year and he provides a lot of leadership to the defense, similar to Hayseed. It gives me confidence that when Manti graduates and moves on, someone is going to step up and fill the void, a team full of leaders.

I have to agree with the Jumbotron. WE went to the BYU game and were behind on of the field goals. It seems like both teams were onthe opposite end of the field from us most of the game. We couldn't see a damn thing that was going on. We all talked about how a Jumbo would be great to be able to see what is happening on the field.

I think that there was a recent rule change that allows anyone (even interior linemen) to run down field immediately on punts.

The progress this team has made this year assures me that this team is in good hands for years to come...

Recruiting is at an all time high

Wins are becoming more and more consistent

Academics are still #1

Beating teams we are supposed to beat while rarely getting blown out (2010 Navy and Stanford)

Can't turn on a sports program without recognition

Things are certainly on the right track...Special teams still needs to improve...our receivers just need more experience....other than that this team is legit
