To say ND stole it implies Holtz went to Norman saw the sign and then put one up at ND. Yes they did have theirs first but Holtz didnt get the idea from them. He saw it in some ND papers or photographs and decided to put it up but yes OU had theirs first. Its just to bad nobody outside of Norman cared about theirs. ND made it famous.

There's an article on Yahoo! that mentions that ND stole the PLACT slogan from Oklahoma...I can't click on the link at work (sports are blocked)...anyone heard of this before?

There's a lot of debate on where the slogan originated. Many teams have used it for many years. Oklahoma has claimed it came from them, but the slogan goes back before their time. It's a useless argument for anybody to claim it was theirs. Anybody in their right mind can relate the ACTUAL plaque to ND.

i'd be more inclined to believe that holtz got it from minnesota where he coached just prior to notre dame because there was talk about a minnesota coach using the saying to motivate his players in the 30s. as the minnesota coach, holtz would have probably been exposed to that tradition.

i also think the "champion" in the slogan is due in part to the athletic clothing maker that i think supplied notre dame for much of its clothing when holtz arrived, but i may be wrong on that.

Calling Two Lakes, do you know where Lou found the image for the sign? You always seem to have the historical aspects on lockdown. Did he find it in a book or ND archive? Did Lou ever elaborate ?

I appreciate any info that can help clear up this story.

I believe the guy who did the huge national champions sign that hangs above it did the PLACT sign today. Both are hand painted.
