How do you guys think Coach Kelly will attack OU's offense and defense

Featured Replies

We will start Golson. OU has lost one game this year and it was to a mobile quarterback. Golson is going to have to run on the spread option. Kansas State used the back as the lead blocker and was effective. I look for Hendrix in the red zone. Golson can put it up soft for Eifert just like Tommy did against BYU. Riddick and Wood will pound the middle and open up the play action. Maybe, just maybe, this is when Chris Brown gets open deep and we actually hit him. Maybe it was a blessing in disguise that we didn't connect on our three opportunities to him. He got open deep, we just didn't deliver.

We have got to play Notre dame football.. It starts always with winning the line. Like Oklahoma say lets run the QB like KSU did, let hit em in the mouth.

ND football as always been about running that rock, this saturday is not any different. Lets limit the big play with our zone defense give up 3's not seven, play with the fire that is back at ND, rush that passer and return OUR LADY OF VICTORY to Glory...

I would like to see John Goodman get some more playing time. He has made big clutch plays almost every opportunity he has had. Just my opinion, but I feel as tho he has earned it.

Keys to the game for me:

- Play great defense. Pressure the QB with 4 and bring 5 regularly.

- No turnovers.

- Run the ball, with a few QB runs, but EG has to get down

- Utilize screen passes in all areas of the field.

I think that he has been out with injury (back?)

I would like to see a play or two with Hendrix on the field along with Golson for a trick play or even a fake trick play.

Would like to see a Hendrix draw, I like seeing that kid run.

I want to see the high school Golson, confident and poised!!!!!

GO IRISH!!!!

The one advantage we have is we have SO much more Kelly can do with this offense whenever he decides to do it. Utilize Neal, put Brown in in the 4th when the defense is gassed and run 9's, Read option pass, GA3 on a wheel route, and finally surprise them by going for an all out punt return. We are getting better at returns but still not even close to an average punt return unit.

We aren't even close to being a BELOW-AVERAGE punt return unit.

Not quite sure what is below that, but abysmal comes to mind.

I could agree to abysmal if we were trying, but BK isn't. His game plan is to prevent fakes on punt returns and fair catch, and kickoff returns are so rare now due to the 5 yards forward he puts minimal time in to it.

My only criticism of the returns is why are they bringing it out when they catch it one yard in the end zone.

So I would say they are performing according to plan.

I'm actually okay with playing it safe on with the punt returns for now. With the newer spread punt formations everyone is running it is much harder to return punts anyway. Neal just needs to keep catching the ball and we'll be fine.

* Protect the ball at all costs

* Run the ball down their throats

* Give the lion share of the touches to sure handed guys like Riddick and TJ

* Get our playmakers -- Eifert, Wood, GA3 -- involved in a couple plays

* Let Golson loose with some designed sneaks and zone-reads but teach him when to get the heck down (and hold on to that ball, Everett)

* Trust our D

When it comes to our D, I believe they will deliver, and that BYU was a bit of a fluke. Even when they were coming after Russell, we did well. The couple of blown coverages -- 1 for a TD and the other one fortunately very poorly underthrown, the TD's, and the penalties will further motivate these guys to really focus and improve this week.

Look out!

I keep hearing this, but I don't believe it. 48 teams currently average better than 10 yards per punt return. What have they figured out that ND can't?

ND is 114th in punt return average. It isn't like they are even average. There are only 10 teams worse than ND, that can't be only because of a rule change.

Does anyone have any stats from Kelly's punt teams at Cincy? Because it really could just be a philosophy thing. It could be that Kelly is willing to give up those 10 yards in order to be sure that no team will successfully fake a punt against him.

Pre-season there was a report that the top d-lines were some of the biggest. ND ranked 1 and Bama 2. OU was no where to be found

Does anyone have the stats he asks. Ha. What a silly question. Where could you find such a thing?

Oh, right here of course.

In 2009 Cincy was #18 in the nation at 13.00 YPR (ND was actually #19 this season).

In 2008 Cincy was #49 at 9.51 YPR.

In 2007 Cincy was #70 at 8.10 YPR.

In the three years at ND:

2010 - #101 at 4.94 YPR.

2011 - #112 at 3.69 YPR.

2012 - #114 at 2.83 YPR.

So while it got better every year at Cincy, it is getting worse every year at ND. Of course, he didn't have a top 10 defense at Cincy, so that could play a roll.
