He basically said ND is not good enough to play with Big Twelve and SEC and PAC 12 teams. He said great job but we aren't that good. I like this,it will keep the players grounded i believe. The fact that people say this can only help coach Kelly use it as motivation and not let them get stagnant and look past teams.

Funny thing was he kept saying we couldn't move the ball against an SEC team, referenced Florida as having a dynamic offense and ND as not having an offense.

I looked at the stats thread and we are their offensive superior, statistically...so those were bad metrics to hang his hat on.

We have a terrible offense. Cowherd is a ND hater, but he's right, this team is not a complete team. We have huge glaring weaknesses and if they don't get fixed, a really good team is going to punish us for them. Halfway through the season, the offense looks like a first game offense with a freshman quarterback. I'm not sure which is the greater evil, Golson and his indecision and fumbleitis or Rees and his lack of physical skill. Golson cannot check out of plays or play in the pressure packed situations and it ruins the play more often than not and Rees can check and audible very well but defenses destroy us on his lack of physical skills. I want to see some offense so bad, this team is so close to being elite.

Completely agree with this ^^

we have an inconsistent offense...

it shows flashes of brilliant potential, or staggers just enough to win (which it didn't even do).

Is inconsistent mean "terrible" ... or something to be simply expected given the inexperience at QB? I think the latter.

we're not good enough to play Pac12 teams? Did we not just beat one of the best Pac12 teams?

now you are just using logic... pfft, we dont need that here!

Yes, very well stated.

First off we do not have a terrible offense. That's just a ridiculous comment.

We have a good offense that at times has gone through growing pains with a young QB.

But there has not been one time this year - even with EG - in which we did not put together a drive when we NEEDED to put one together.

Even last week, it was EG who put us in position to tie that game up late before going down with an injury.

The key is, when we've needed to dial it up we have.

There is nothing TERRIBLE about that.

Secondly, we have an exceptional defense. And I mean like an EXCEPTIONAL defense.

Between the two, we are a very, very, VERY good football team.

Why listen to cowherd when the DP show is on at the same time? Way more entertaining

If this offense isn't flirting with terrible than I would hate to see what your definition of a terrible offense is. Our offense is bad, it's ok to admit it. Our rushing game is inconsistent at best, our passing game is inconsistent at best, we fail to sustain long drives against any defense that is average or better, three and outs are way too common, our qb play is at a freshman level (no matter which qb is in), our line play is very average, and they regularly deprive our defense of much needed rest on the sidelines. I'm sorry, but as much as I love ND, I can't call this offense anything close to good. It is the achilles heel of this team and if the offense doesn't get its act together soon it will cost us big.

The defense has come up huge every time we have needed them this season and eventually they won't be able to, that is the reality and it is no fault of the defense. The defense has pulled 80%+ of the weight of this team all season long and it's time the offense started pulling their weight and helping them out. The only reason the games against Purdue, Michigan St., Michigan and Stanford were even semi close was because the offense was horrid. We had the opportunity in every one of those games to go up by multiple scores but the offense regularly failed to perform. Not only has this offense not put the ball into the end zone or through the goal posts, but they have made the defense have to work harder than they should have. No "good" offense puts their defense in such bad positions so often, nothing you can say could ever change that fact.

Please see: 2007 Notre Dame Offense =)

Now THAT offense was terrible...we're slightly below average

our offensive efficiency is actually ranked quite high (when you consider who we have played).

a shining data point is our methodical drive (the percentage of each offense's drives that run 10 or more plays) rankings: #7 in the country.

for those who love quantitative analysis this is a great source:

This + 100000000000000000000000000000000000000

Regardless of if we want to refer to it as bad, awful, terrible, atrocious, complete shit or simply below average...I think we need to agree that the offense will have to be at its best to beat Oklahoma or USC on the road. It really comes down to 2 things, 1) what is the maximum potential for the offense for THIS season? 2) is that good enough to beat Oklahoma, USC and anyone else in the country?

according to the numbers, our offense is actually underrated (because we have played high quality defensive teams)

...while our defense is actually overrated (because we have played crappy offensive teams)

You can say this all ya want, and i understand its a common theme, but the quantitative measures of our offenses efficiency do not support your assertion.

On offense, we perform better against our opponents than other teams who play them do. So while our raw numbers arent high, we still are getting the job done comparatively speaking.

I'm on the west coast so I don't get them live. I'm not sure if they are in the same time slot on east but they are here.

They way the local Fox (DP) affiliate and ESPN (Her) stagger their commercials, I can usually flip from one to other without hearing a horrible AM ad.

I listen to both on the way to work, but prefer Patrick.

P.S. Patrick thought Stanford scored.

Our offense is not terrible.

No it's not terrible but the line has played WELL below any of our worst expectations.

we're not good enough to play Pac12 teams? Did we not just beat one of the best Pac12 teams?

Thats not what he said. He said he doesn't the ND's offense is good enough to beat Bama, Oregon, Oklahoma and USC because the offense will have to score points. Wasn't hating just stating the offense isnt that great, which it isnt.
