Kona still has another year & was starting to begin the year & Springman can also play NT. I wouldn't be surprised if they tried Jarron Jones there too.

Any chance Sheldon Day can grow into the role as well?

I agree. He has a lot of siblings to take care of. From what he's mentioned in the past, his family's financial situation is precarious if not dire.

 

A motivated Nix is a Wilfork clone and Wilfork is probably second best DT behind Ngata.

Been wondering about this too ... I don't know where they rate Nix on draft boards but NT is becoming a hot commodity in the nfl I personally think he's the most important defensive player other than teo we definitely need to go hard after that position in '14

I worry about Nix leaving after this year not waiting another one because his stock is on the rise. Personally, I would love to get one more year out of him and he would be wise to look at that with a really strong class of DT's out there for this years draft class. As of now Day looks the best suited body wise to take the role over when he moves on.

Never thought of this.. losing Nix to the draft would be a huge blow. I think jarron jones once he bulks up some more would replace him fine. Springmann has impressed me more than kona this year too. He also can add more weight to his 6'6 frame.

Personally in my opinion I think Nix will stay based on who he is and how he was raised. Clearly big Lou is a great person above all else. He will want that degree 100% completed (which he could technically do this year, I don't know how far along he is). Also with another year he has potential for 1st round (in no mock draft is he even mentioned 1st round this year so far)

I've said this before and it seems clear that BK and co are not going to recruit a replacement for Nix. They clearly prefer a more versatile type of D-lineman.

My gut tells me he stays as well but its not totally inconceivable that he's gonna goto the draft. I think he legit likes school, likes ND and enjoys playing on this team.

Agreed. More Tuitts, less Nixs...

It's hard to find a true nose tackle for the 3-4 position. Probably the single most important position, also, in the 3-4. My guess is that Springmann would step in as the starter. Either way, hope he stays but wouldn't be surprised if he bolts. Would be curious to see where his combine numbers come in at, which pro teams put a ton of stock in.

I don't think you'll ever see Kelly going to straight 6'2"-6'3" guys on the d line Bc he likes the ability to deflect passes and Tuitt and Kap do it

Springmann is coming along just fine and has 4 years of eligibility. He plays every game and plays well. He can get down low enough to play nose, run sideline to sideline and get those big paws up pretty high with his 6' 6'' frame. He is athletic enough to do the spin move and could do well in a foot race with Tuitt. He has been slowed with injuries, especially in the weight room, but will take a big step forward this winter.

 

I love Nix. I hope he comes back. But don't worry about it. We are Notre Dame~~~finally that means something. We are Notre Dame, we reload, we don't rebuild.
