Their Oline was better than I thought. We still hurried Morris and forced bad throws. I'll take it!

man we did not have one ourselves either! The thing was we could NOT get to the QB with 3 or 4, but we could not afford to blitz this week either and let our corners get abused.

No aggressive defense= no forced turnovers. But the big thing is it still equaled no big plays given up

no big plays given up= no points

no points=no miami win

I'm impressed with the fact we scored 41 with out the aid of a tournover

And Holtz didn't rush his lineman against Miami in the 80's.

BFD. We won.

Go Irish!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Don't get me wrong, Diaco obviously called the game correctly and I do understand only rushing 3 to stop the "large chunks",,

BUT, not 1 sack or turnover? Hmmmm,,,,,,

I'll take it the win though, not bitching, just curious. Hopefully, Miami is just that disciplined and we still beat the crap out of 'em!

I think it motivates and or humbles the defensive line some though. It might also have been the bye week. I like the d-line hungry for Stanford so its all good.

Manti was about to have an easy pick (6?!) but someone tipped it up and over him to a Miami player behind him haha

^This. On many plays ND rushed 3 or 4 while Miami fought them off with 6. Sure no turnovers or sacks but Morris was still harassed into making inaccurate throws. Pretty good pressure for being outnumbered 2-1.

I think that was Fox. Good concentration by the Miami player to make that catch.

Our DLine also tipped at least two if I recall correctly.

It really did boil down to dropping three consistently, and that Morris has more of a clue about whats going on in the pocket than Robinson. A little taller, a little better field vision, and... well, frankly it is easier to negotiate the pocket when you're only worrying about 3 guys coming at you.

Had we decided to blitz these guys a little bit, and in turn bring 4 as our consistent base defense, I'm sure we would have gotten more pressure and sack totals. Might have been beaten over the top more too. I'm not sweating the thought of our defensive front being imposters.

Less pressure, less turnovers. One lead to the other - and I'm okay with it.

Totally agree. Would it be great to get 6 sacks a game? Yes. However, what is even better for a defense is gettting pressure with 3 and 4. No, they didn't always get home, but after the first few drives, Morris rarely had a clean pocket to throw from.

If you can disturb the pocket with 3 or 4 rushing, that makes for a very difficult defense to move the ball on.

Sacks are an overrated statistic. It's all about consistent pressure. If a d-lineman were to get 15 sacks this but very few other pressures, that's a much worse season than 0 sacks and pressure 35% of the time.

This was the case with the Broncos last year, everyone raved about them getting sacks but their consistent pressure was actually 27th best in the league so when they faced anyone with a good passing game they got torched.

Rushing 3 had a lot to do with Duke Johnson. It was a great strategy in my opinion as far as limiting outside running bang-plays.

even though we didn't give up the big play and only allowed 3 points i was a little dissapointed in the defense. no real pressure on the qb, no sacks, no turnovers and there were to many miami wr's running wide open. had ND not gotten so lucky with so many miami wr's dropping passes it may have been a different game. but this was a good test for NDs young secondary against some fast talented players.

Miami's O-line looked better than expected. Seantrel Henderson included.

It was a brilliant and perfectly executed game plan. Step one of war is know thy enemy. Miami is a wildly inconsistent offense capable of making big plays.

So what do you do? Take away the big play, make them go 10 plays to score and watch them implode, which is exactly what happened. It wasn't sexy, but it was the perfect plan. Not every game requires the same defense and a good coordinator knows that.

Eh, I would agree with this assessment if I quit watching the game after the first quarter. But the adjustments Diaco made after the first series completely took away the deep ball. We played textbook bracket coverage, allowing them to have the underneath stuff but ceding nothing longer than 10 yards down field.

This is a Miami pass offense that is still ranked 18th in the nation after the game against us and threw for 1002yds combined in the two games before us. We held them to 201yds passing and 3 points. We held them to 84yds rushing.

This is essentially how we're going to play U$C. Stanford wrote the book and then Cal published it, you rush 3 or 4 and then bracket Lee/Woods. I don't care how good Marqise Lee is, if we can afford to sit our safeties 15yards deep and bump him at the line, we can shut him down. He's not Calvin Johnson.

What I liked about this, is we adjusted. Last year, when there was a new wrinkle, we didn't know how to adjust. Now, even the Freshman out there, know how to adjust. They're well coached and it's good to see.
