Been a fan since 1987...can't for the life of me remember a player having an emotional impact on the students/alumni/fan base/media that Manti has had.

Β

Probably have not had a player fight through the adversity that Te'o has faced - losing his grandfather, grandmother and girlfriend all within a year of each other...

My ND heritage isn't as long as yours, but I'd say in their time actually playing, no.

Β

Guys like Rocket have taken on those traits as their legend grows over time, but we're they that big during their time on campus?

Agreed Rocket, I have had a lot of favorites through the years but I don't remember any of them having as big of an impact on the University, the fan base, the team and all of the incoming recruits.

Β

All of the recruits talk about him on a regular basis. I have seen it on Twitter almost daily from Smith, Anzalone, Deeb and even several of the offensive players coming in.

Β

He is truly a leader and has done an outstanding job representing himself and the University.

He's, dare i say it, a god-send

lol, that reminded me of a thread a couple years back where I was bashing Charlie Weis for being awful and Rocket was all like "He got us Manti" and this was my response:

LOL, I totally remember that post...

Β

You were probably right...

Nope, not of this magnitude. But then, what player ever loved ND and its people so much and shows it on a day to day basis?

Zorich, maybe? He was another guy that had to fight through adversity and worked his tail off at ND. I was a kid when he was there and loved him, but not sure what the adult take on him at the time was.

Manti is a wonderful representative of the university and great all around kid. I wish him nothing but happiness and peace of mind knowing that someday he will be reunited with his loved ones in Heaven.

Β

That being said I caution people comparing Manti's grief with any other ND player in recent memory. TJ Jones lost his father last year, and Alex Bullard lost his father as well and left ND to be closer to home after that tragedy. Chris Zorich came from an extremely rough background growing up, and found out after the bowl game his last year that his mother, his rock, had passed away.

Β

I know it wasn't Rocketsan's intent to upset anyone or minimize others personal loss and struggles through life. I just ask in light of all the support for a star player, who's definitely had a lot to deal with, to remember that there are other young men who have had a difficult go with life and tragedy within our ND family.

Moreso, it was Zorich who found his mom lying on the floor...

Β

It wasn't my intention at all. And I think that what's transpired the last few weeks is just the pinnacle of the love people have shown this young man over the last four years...

Give Weis and Brian Polian some credit for this one. If Kelly was the coach at the time... Teo is probably a USC Trojan.

that was my angle in that thread...that Charlie had a lot to do with Te'o being Irish.

And you were right. To try and explain it any other way is just revisionist history. Teo didn't even know much about ND, and those coaches did a great job convincing everyones favorite player to come to ND.

Everett Golson perhaps?

Β

I mean he can throw an INT and some on here will claim he's just trying to keep the game competitive for the fans sake.
