With 19 scholarship offers in hand, offensive lineman Matt Romine of Tulsa, Okla., will have his work cut out for him when he tries to cut down to five schools before the start of his senior season. To help push that process forward, Romine will visit both Notre Dame and Michigan later this month.
"It will happen July 27," he said. "I'm going (to Notre Dame) for one day. My mom is going up with me. We're going to fly up on Thursday and then drive up to Michigan on Friday and fly out on Saturday."
Romine has already visited South Bend but wants to see another side of campus.
"I'm just trying to get a different view of it," he said. "Every time I've been up there it's been for the spring game or a game. I just want my mom to see Notre Dame; she's seen some of the schools around here so I want her to see Notre Dame."
The trip to South Bend was supposed to take place earlier in the month but a scheduling conflict with head coach Charlie Weis put the trip on hold.
"On Wednesday I was talking to coach (Mike) Haywood and coach (John) Latina trying to get the visit set up because originally I was supposed to visit on July 20," he said. "But coach Weis called them and said that he was going to be at an engagement in New Jersey that day so they texted me back and asked if I could move it back a week."
Romine met Weis at the Notre Dame spring game back in April and wanted to give his mother a chance to talk with the Irish head coach.
"I would like for my mom to meet coach Weis," he said. "I met him when I went up for the spring game. Just to talk to him is a great honor, but I would like for my mom to meet him."
Following his day in South Bend, Romine will head to Ann Arbor to take a look at what the Wolverines have to offer.
"This will be my first visit to Ann Arbor," he said. "I just want to see what Michigan is all about. I've never been to Michigan, so I just want to see what they have to offer."
While Romine waits for the Midwest tour to arrive, he'll continue working out with his team and personal trainer. He didn't attend any camps this summer but has joined his Union teammates for a team camp.
"We're allowed to have a team camp now here in Oklahoma, so we're taking advantage of that," he said. "We're just trying to learn our new system and get that all polished up. It's coming along really well. It's a little bit different than we're accustomed to but we're coming along really well."
