Seeing multiple reports of this, apparently a letter sent from Swarbrick to Michigan was obtained by the FOI.

Games will be cancelled in 2015-2017. Michigan is already off schedule in 2018 and 2019 I believe, so there will be at least a 5 year break coming up.

They're scared we break their 3 year streak

I thought this was from Swarbrick to Michigan?

In any case, I think this has to do with the ACC affiliation and having to schedule 2 more ACC games.

Swarbrick is probably going to cut two of our rivalries for a period of time, and then go on to cut another two to accommodate the 2 more ACC games we have to play (read: we already play 3 ACC teams a year). USC and Navy will be the mainstays.

So from 2015 - 2019, Michigan and let's say Stanford will be off the schedule in replacement of adding FSU and Maryland. Then in 2020 - 2025, Michigan and Stanford comes back on, and we leave off Purdue and MSU...

The Big 10 is no longer relevant.

the big ten is a joke...................

I believe we are doing this because with upcoming playoff format the SSkunbears would hurt our S.O.S.;)

Navy, USC, & Stanford are the mainstays, those are not changing.

ya, this is about the ACC deal, but I am sure scUM fans are saying we are scared or something... I like the Michigan game personally. HUGE recruiting rival and HUGE rival on the college landscape. I would much rather get rid of Purdue or MSU. The reason we hate Michigan so much is because this is one of the biggest rivalries in the nation.

the big ten is a joke...................

Exactly, especially if an irrelevant football program can sweep the B1G teams on their schedule... 8-)

Really, I'm ok with this decision. I'm tired of dealing with scUM fans complaining about a) how much Notre Dame sucks and is irrelevant when they beat us, or b) how much Notre Dame sucks and is just lucky when we beat them. We have much better rivalries with other schools that I'd rather see continue than this one.

Navy, USC, & Stanford are the mainstays, those are not changing.

Agree. USC and Stanford staying on the schedule means one West Coast game every year. Can't see that changing.

Navy saved ND during World War II. They will stay on the schedule unless they don't want to play ND any more.

I believe ND has played fewer games versus Michigan than Purdue or Michigan State. Not sorry to see them go.

Wonder who we play more regularly going forward, in-state Purdue or MSU?

Michigan and the B1G teams give us the biggest headaches with scheduling flexibility. I don't see it being any surprise that Michigan was the first to go, they've always been the biggest pain in the ass.

The typical speculation right now is:

5 ACC games

3 vs. Navy, USC, Stanford

1 Shamrock Series (I'm not too sure about this, but I heard that we are looking at venues to continue this series after Arizona St. in Dallas next year)

Rotate MSU, PU, UM (Obviously, everything isn't clear with the Michigan series yet, but it looks like we won't play them again until at least 2020.)

"Other"- It looks like this features games in the Big 12 for the near future.

So, we have 1 game on the west coast each year, 3 games along the east coast with the ACC games/Navy, and, if we continue to schedule Big 12 teams, a game in the South every other year. The Shamrock series continues to move us all over the place, as well. Based on this schedule, it looks like we have all the recruiting hotbeds covered. Not bad, Jack.

First of all, we knew ND wanted some sort of rotational Big 10 schedule coming up. If ND is looking to create a schedule in which there is a true rotation of those three schools, something that they cannot have is a contract that requires three years notice to go non-continuous. The first logical step towards the preferred new schedule is to opt out of that contract with sufficient notice.

Secondly, did JS ever say that ND would certainly not be playing Michigan in those years? He only states that they are opting out of the contract (as far as the excerpts I've seen). In particular:

"While this move is a necessary precaution as we begin the process of meeting our new scheduling commitment to the ACC, please know that Notre Dame very much values its relationship with Michigan and we look forward to working with you to ensure that our great football rivalry can continue."

I guess my take is that I'm a bit concerned, as I like this rivalry, but it's far from set in stone that ND won't play Michigan in these years.

I believe we are doing this because with upcoming playoff format the SSkunbears would hurt our S.O.S.;)

Funny stuff!

Opting out of the Michigan game is like taking the huge last poker pot of the night and telling them they've got no chance of winning their money back anytime soon as we've found a new game.

Makes me wonder if the Michigan series was cancelled just because they could do so without further obligation.

"Our contract with Michigan has an automatic rollover provision -- with a year being added each time a game is played," Notre Dame senior associate athletics director John Heisler said in a statement. "We needed to avoid the automatic addition of additional games until we can get a better understanding of our available inventory in those years -- an understanding that will develop as we implement our five-game scheduling commitment to the Atlantic Coast Conference."

I don't mind losing Michigan.....but Im going to miss the MSU games each year...those games have always been the best IMO and definately not always in ND's favor...not only the games from long ago but recently theyve been awesome...I'll remember those games Clausen and Quinn had against them not to mention the fake FG game forever......not to mention that theyve played like 105 times or something

I honestly don't think the MSU series is gonna be a casualty. While we've played Purdue 83 times to MSU's 79, there is no doubt that the MSU rivalry is infinitely more cherished. It provides us with a bi-yearly marquee game under the lights.
