Should be fired.

1.) Poor administration & execution of personal foul penalties having to do with violent hits(inconsistent)

2.) Slapping Bellichick on the wrist for spygate

3.) Bountygate - TBD

4.) NFLPA Lockout -

5.) Officials Lockout

This guy is a f*cking moron. Can his ass.

Clean house in professional sports and shitcan David Stern while you are at it.

He makes Bettman of the NHL look good. Goodell is screwing up this game but my biggest problem with him is how he has pussyfied football with the personal foul calls

yeah because those helmet to helmet hits should be legal.

They are not being paid millions because it's touch...

Isn't participation in youth football in a significant decline thanks to all of the head injury research/findings that are seemingly pouring out from every nook and cranny these days? Fact is, if they don't "pussify" it, there won't be many players to play it in 20-30 years.

the answer is remove the helmets............

You have a very good point. Having played both rugby and football, I can attest to the change in mentality that comes from the the helmet.

Rugby is all about body control and leverage, football is about impact. Removing helmets would be a massive change to the sport as it currently exists, but would make it a much safer game.

That is what they said 20-30 years ago. As long as the NFL is paying millions there will be impoverished youth lining up for the opportunity.

My company has a large constituency in Europe--naturally, they are soccer and rugby fans.

They heckle us from time to time citing the fact that football players where pads. One of the guys has a great retort a few weeks back. He said: "helmets aren't for protection, it's a weapon".

I completely agree with that!

I've heard a suggestion to remove the facemask...that makes sense as well.

This is simply a case of the masses attacking "The Man." I have been content with Goodell so far, Goodell isnt the ref who is calling these terrible calls and the owners (who he works for) are the ones not budging on the ref lockout. It is easy for the masses to attack "The Man" figure these days. It happened in all the lockouts during the offseasons these last couple years and all the commissioners were booed at their respective Drafts.

Buddy of mine used to be a D1 hockey ref.

He swore adding helmets and facemasks made the game much more dangerous.

Wasn't Goodell at a Notre Dame game last season?

Pretty sure he was though can't remember why.

I caught a Gaelic Football game while I was in Ireland for Navy, and that game was easily as exciting if not more so than American football. No helmets, no pads. But we always have to everything faster and more EXTREME!!!

I know that it's useless to try to explain things to you...but the intent of the defensive player is not hit the other on the helmet, it's to stop him. When you have a split second to react and you're trying to hit a moving target, sometimes the helmets will collide.

The hit on Heyward-Bey this past weekend was tough, clean, and legal. The DB did what he was supposed to do, separate the receiver from the ball. That is football. Yet you have some loud mout punk like Keyshawn on espn complaining about a flag or that somehow the real refs could have prevented Heyward Bey from landing in the hospital. As a receiver you know you can take a shot like that from a safety, it's part of the sport.

I completely agree with Miles and the others who have compared this to rugby. You don't see many head to head shots in that sport because the players feel the need to protect themselves. The helmet gives a false sense of security. Also a lot of the injuries take place when teammates collide.

...but the intent of the defensive player is not hit the other on the helmet, it's to stop him.

The best way to stop him from ever coming across the middle again and possibly impact him from making future catches is to give him a hit he will remember. The easiest way to do that is to use your shoulder pads or helmet to hit him in the head. There are MANY defenders that intend to hit an offensive player in the head/helmet to stop them and there are MANY coaches that encourage it.

i didnt play football long, 2 years of rec league and one year jv and it was always a spearing penalty to lead with the helmet no matter what. somewhere along the line these players are learning to lead with the helmet which is BS. i understand there will be instances where it just happens but its pretty obvious when its blatant. if you think that thats ok and part of the game u are a MoRan!

Pretty obvious you didn't play long. Part of the problem is people who don't play making and enforcing these new penalties. I can pick out isolated instances of players taking cheap shots but that's not what I'm talkin about here. Spearing has been a penalty for a long time now. Somehow this has tuned into some kind of helmet to helmet debate when it wasn't my original point....I knew it would be useless.

Leading with the helmet is a good way to not walk again. Happened to the kid who lived across the hall from me freshman year (not at ND). He was paralyzed fro the neck down after trying to make a tackle on a kickoff.

Jon33dn, you bring back fond memories of the game of Rugby. Never quite understood why it was referred to as a "gentlemen's game". Play like animals on the field and sing like perverts at the post game party. Near as I could figure it was because we would add a "sir" on at the end of cussing out the Ref.

Scotia, in the United Kingdom rugby is predominantly played by the middle and upper classes at private schools, whereas soccer is more of a working class game.

“It is clear that one is a gentleman’s game played by hooligans; the other a hooligan’s game played by gentlemen.” Chancellor of Cambridge University
