when tommy reese came in for golson and led ND to a 10-0 halftime lead i started to wonder what happens if golson dosent lock down the qb position by the end of the year. kiel is 6'4 210 lbs. (most likely will be 220-225 lbs. next year) he's got a strong arm, he's got the size you love in a qb and he's moble enough to avoid pressure. im probbly looking way to into the future right now but if golson dosent take control of the offense and reese keeps coming in to bail out the offense does BK open up the qb postion again next year by throwing kiel into the mix?

I actually was going there in my head during the game, but I fully expect Golson to take a giant step forward for the Miami game. Remember he had 4 papers and an exam this week. He is not accustomed to all this pressure. Put him through the fire and he will be battle tested. I have faith in Golson.

One would think he's going to be the guy...

I'm not sure how much Golson would have to show for Kiel to not even get a look, but I imagine it would have to be pretty substantial.

That said, at some point the cycle of having a new QB has to stop, that would make four years in a row.

But number one QB's are number one for a reason, so who the hell knows anymore.

Maybe Kiel will be the passing QB, Golson the change of pace guy and Rees the closer.

The fact that 4 games into the season it is looking like there will be another open quarterback competition with the possibility of another redshirt freshman being the starter is pretty concerning. Not usually the sign of a successful program. For all of Kelly's quarterback developing credentials, we have yet to have even a slightly above average quarterback play in his tenure with Notre Dame. It is up for debate whether that is his fault or just a lot of bad luck getting a stable full of qb's that just can't perform.

Hardly a fair statement just four games into his third year.

And hell, he's made an average at best quarterback, Rees, look very functional...

He's in a tough spot. On one hand he inherited only two guys, neither of which was a good fit for him, or very good, but on the other hand he's had multiple seasons with guys like Hendrix/Golson and hasn't got much out of them.

Granted the Golson era is very early, but four for four with new QB's would be pretty rough.

One would expect Kelly to say that every position is open for the best player to come and claim it...

Kiel will start next year. I could see Golson transferring, but Rees will hang around. Hendrix won't see action again.

Golson isn't fast enough to be a "change of pace" guy. I would imagine Kiel is possibly as fast or faster than Golson anyway, same for Hendrix.

Malik Zaire - he's a guy that is more athletic in that regard.

I have no problem with rotating QB's. If Golson can't rise up and be the starter, then Kiel will get his shot. Regardless of all that, we have Rees batting cleanup if shit goes awry. As long as they keep winning, I don't care if they put Luke Massa in at QB.

Golson deserves a fairer shake and a heckuva lot longer time period to draw any conclusions about him yet. He has us at 4-0 starting. Yes, he made a couple bad mistakes against Michigan, but the kid is going to be fine long term. I will admit, though, that the Miami game is a big one for him, our qb position, and it's future. Needs to have a good one.

Agreed. I'm excited about Kiel, but we can't bury Golson yet -- and I was one of the people on this board warning others that we'd see major growing pains with Everett.

The kid has talent, but we're seeing that at times, the game is moving too fast for him. He'll learn to adjust, and then we'll see what we have. But it's completely unfair to make a final judgment on a 19-year old after his fourth start.

BK is in luck this year. He has an experienced back up to go to. Golson has the tremendous upside potential - Kelly is playing the long game by grooming a talented QB for wins 2 and 3 years from now. Golson needs time to learn. So when BK feels a game might slip away he goes to Rees and gets the wins. Nobody comes in as a freshman and shoots the lights out. I think we stay calm and start Golson against Miami. But Rees must see some significant snaps to stay sharp in case he needs to come in against Stanford.

1st quarter=zaire

2nd quarter=golson

3rd quarter=keil

4th quarter=rees

problem solved :D

No one is making a final judgement. The question posed was, "what if Golson doesn't lock down the spot?". That isn't saying he can't, or won't, but a hypothetical if he doesn't.

No harm in that, Kiel is the number one QB in his class after all, no harm in wanting him on the field.

i didn't expect to see a thread like this just yet...

Kiel could leave, but if he goes that means ND’s QB situation is pretty well set.

I think the Kiel folks wanted him closer to home and to get a good education.

I could be wrong, but I think he’s going to stay. He knew exactly what he was getting into. He could be good enough to supplant Golson or maybe he ends up just having one year in the sun at ND.

A thread like what?

THE WHOLE THREAD IS HYPOTHETICAL!

The OP isn't saying Golson can't do it. He isn't saying Golson won't do it.

He is asking, hypothetically, if Golson doesn't do it, will Kiel get a chance. What is wrong with that?

It's a bye week and we're short on material.

That is a good thing IMO :)

Good God Kelly has messed up this QB situation. Are we absolutely certain Golson wouldn't have adjusted and done as well as Tommy or better?

I am convinced Tommy threw two balls this year that should have been pick 6. Against Purdue, Purdue lost its best CB. He also blindly threw the ball up for grab and Goody came down with it. What if the CB got that and Purdue kicked the winning FG. Against UM, Kelly wanted to run out the clock and run the ball. Tommy is better at getting us into the right formation. But TJ took a ball away from a backup CB that would have been a pick 6 against a starting 1st rate CB. To make matters worse, I am convinced we would have lost the game if Dumbnard would have turned the ball over so much.

Golson was not given the chance to redeem a very poor start. Kelly is treating his starting QB as a backup who comes in mob up duty when the game is not on the line. How do we know Golson will not be a clutch player if he never gets the chance.

I am a big Kelly supporter. He just needs to let someone else handle the quarterbacks. He sucks at it. He is developing a gutless QB. I hate what he is doing.

I love the defense. I am not at all convinced Kelly's QB decisions is the reason we are winning at all.

If we get to USC and Golson has still not been in a "game on the line" situation, Kelly should be shot!!!!
