irish03
I understand Golson is only playing in his 3rd game this weekend and isn't up to speed yet on reading all the defensive looks and I am not placing the blame on him. This just seems to be our offense for the last 2 years with lots of delay of game penalties or burned timeouts. Didn't really see it much in the Navy game against an inferior opponent, but it reared its head in the Purdue game and we saw a lot of plays run with little to no time on the play clock or we had to burn our timeouts. Does experience cure this or do Kelly/Martin need to give one or two options and just run the play?
toddrhodes
I read on here that most of that was because PU was changing their looks on Defense. A young QB can't adlib like a seasoned vet might be able to. I think and hope that will get better with time.
IrishFan33
watching the coaches get the plays in make you wanna hurt yourself.... No other team in college football takes as long as we do to get plays in....
piratey
The stupid hand signals are a bust. Go with a sign like Oregon: http://media.bonnint.net/apimage/ded990dc-3a84-446f-bb4c-566f36d868de.jpg http://cbskmle.files.wordpress.com/2010/10/signal-signs-385x240.jpg?w=385&h=240 http://img202.imageshack.us/img202/4992/scottvanpelt.jpg
stdntDrvr
didn't we use signs like Oregon in Kelly's first year?
IrishItalian15
I agree that we should be more efficient in getting the play call in and running the play. However, the value in having a guy with 4 years left of competition learning the system first hand is going to pay off. My guess is that by midseason all of this will be solved and that Golson and BK will be on the same page.
Miles
I thought I heard/read somewhere that the signs aren't actually plays but are used to help the QB identify coverage and other defensive schemes. If that's Everett's biggest challenge at this point, it might work. Call the play, identify the scheme and let him audible off of that. IrishItalian15
It is also possible that BK is being very cautious with Golson and not wanting to put him into positin to make bad decisions/mistakes until he feels fully comfortable. Or, we are taking our time against Navy/Purdue to snap the ball and could go up-tempo against MSU this weekend as an unexpected change of pace. Who knows, but what I do know is that BK is a genius and micro-manager. He will have this worked out the way he wants it soon. Golson is the man he wants to work it out with. BK smiles at him a lot more than all the past QB's.
irish03
There has got to be a more efficient way to get the play called. Hopefully it will come in due time. I see Kelly getting so frustrated sometimes, but at this point that is on him and not simplifying things enough for our Qbs. Also, is it just me or is NBC fixated with catching the next Kelly blow-up after a penalty or wasted timeout? That camera is always on him. I don't think I saw him once on the CBS game with Navy. SDIrishFan
Another thought...since apparently the defense has the opportunity to sub in and out while the ref stands over the ball, I can see them deliberately slow playing while subbing, costings us a few seconds with the check with me. Thus, causing us to burn timeouts or get delay of game penalties. I thought Martin was supposed to simplify the offense and play calling, what happened to that? I'm still of the opinion that OC and DC get too caught up in the strategy. It's one thing to do it in the pros where it's all about matchups and exploiting one particular weakness. In college, it's more about the Jimmys and the Joes and not the X's and the O's. Call a play, line up, and beat the man you're supposed to beat. If the defense wins, so be it. Get them on the next play.
irish03
It seems to me that Weis and in some cases Kelly are more of X's and O's and strategy. They both seem to do a take what the defense gives you as opposed to dictating what we want to do.

He looks like he might cry... I really like Charlie as a person--just don't think he's cut out to be a head coach. I love Saban's fire! Even when they're up by 28 (scUM game) you mess up he lets you know. I'm a firm believer that the team reflects the coaches personality. I guess when you've won 2 NC(he hadn't won last years yet) you can do whatever the hell you want.

If the offense doesn't make a personnel change....no time alloted for defensive sub. I agree though, we gotta get the freakin plays called sooner, so we can assess the situation and make audibles. Getting to the line with 10 seconds on the clock is too little.
