SpeedsterX
And I could be totally off my rocker but I believe (hope) that Kelly thought and truly believed that we could win that game with DD, Riddick, Eifert, Koyack etc.. I believe the freshmen, Neal, GAIII and Brown only have a handful of plays for their specific talents and he did not want to show them with Navy or Purdue. I believe that Kelly is holding back some of our very young electric playmakers for the meat of the schedule. The misdirection stuff, the speed stuff, a fast out route by Brown etc. that Don Juan was scratching his head why we weren't using is being saved for the "hard" games. I really think in the back of my mind that these things will be unfolding starting this week. I believe the first 2 games were about teaching and building confidence for Everett. Keep things as simple as possible to have success. Be assured, Kelly has more than just the handful of plays we've seen so far and other than the couple of reverses, we did see, his playbook is like 60 pages if not more. Kelly see's the whole season as a whole. No need to use every trick up his sleeve for (what we thought) was possibly the 2 worst teams we play all season. Kelly also knows what Everett can do and he's made it clear that he'll be our starter from here on out. Why? Because he hopes Golson gets better than average every game? No! It's because he knows what he has and what he's capable of but he's not going to just put that out there prematurely! He only really has to "open" up the playbook for 3-4 games this season and he knows it. That is what I truly believe and I have every intention of seeing things get a lot more interesting from here on out!

FaithInIrish Forever
I think he is saving some dynamic shots too. We have basically only seen Neal on 3 reverses or so on offense Brown has been on the field but not featured yet. I truly believe GAIII's absence was a function of not being able to run the ball against Purdue BUT... with Cierre back GAIIIbecomes a luxury player again, meaning a jet sweep to GAIII is now very possible because he has to share carries at running back, but can still break a 60 yarder for you, so he will get different types of touches. Phillydomer
Speedster, I really hope that you're right, but I'm not entirely sure you are. If you remember, neither Lynch nor Tuitt played last year against Michigan. I know they're D-lineman and it's different from offensive skill players, but I truly think that Kelly believes in the value of experience. That said, I do hope that you're right and I think you may be on to something. How odd was it that KLM, Daniels, Slaughter, Eifert, Day, etc. were pulled for injury and kept out all game, only to be cleared already for this weekend? My sense is that Kelly wants everyone at full strength for MSU and he relied on a lot of second stringers to beat a (slightly) inferior Purdue opponent. I think Kelly likes the "surprise" and he's whiley. He has stuff up his sleeve and I don't trust judging him by past experience. I think he's sneaky and he likes it that way. jarious
Hmm. I was thinking GA3 got little play because ND gave the RB the ball once in the 1st quarter, and rushed with the RB six times in the first half for, like, 4 yards. Given that Theo is the better receiving option out of the backfield and also better at picking up the blitz...just assumed that put GA3 on ice. But I definitely like your theory better. Donjuan
It's actually not that hard to believe if you sit down and think about all the mysterious personnel/play-call choices. And I really do think it's beyond the typical "new gameplan" that every coach implements for the next opponent. In my opinion, Kelly kept so much under wraps that MSU really doesn't have a lot to go on--especially with Golson. It's kind of funny to think about MSU having to put in a gameplan for Tommy Rees and John Goodman. You have to prepare for everything especially when coach Kelly threw everybody out there last week... Trust me, MSU will be ready for Toma on that reverse. cali_domer
I love your theory. If your theory is correct than Kelly was playing on a razor's wire. If we lost that game(Which we could have) he would have been under fire from the Alumni and the fan base for that game. During the whole game I was truly puzzled at the play calling and if I apply your train of thought than it eases my worries a little bit. I hope your theory turns out to be true and the good news is we only have 04 days, 22 hours, 16 minutes to find out if you're correct. Do you or anyone else think that he didn't know the repercussions of putting Tommy in there to ice the game? If that would have backfired on him, ALL HELL WOULD HAVE BROKE LOOSE! He knew the odds and he went for it. Noone and I mean NOONE saw Tommy come in to the game and said, "Oh yea, that makes sense. Tommy is in, we'll definitely win this now!" In retrospect, it makes sense. And I'll add this, minus the turnovers, Tommy is a quick thinker and can read a defense pretty damn good. If the boy could just run and throw long with accuracy, he'd be something more special than he already is. We'll all know this weekend. Hopefully we'll all drop our jaws in surprise. corysold
You'd better be right. If this is the offense we've been waiting for with "his" QB, what was the point?
Phillydomer
You'd better be right. If this is the offense we've been waiting for with "his" QB, what was the point? I think people are a little too hasty to judge the current offense for three major reasons: (1) against Navy we clearly ran a vanilla offense so that we wouldn't reveal our hand and so that Golson could just get comfortable. (2) Against Purdue, BK just had Golson throw all day because there's no way Theo Riddick at 5-10, 200lbs, was going to slice through their monstrous D-line. (3) It was only Golson's second game, and by and large, the skill players on offense are extremely young. They need some time to play together and nail their assignments before Kelly speeds up the tempo and throws in a bunch of twists that make use of D. Neal or Chris Brown or even D Daniels, who's just a redshirt freshman. I sincerely think this offense is frighteningly good by the end of the year, but its players are developing right now and many of them are playing for the very first time. Frankly, I'm excited by the product I've seen. It beats the hell out of Clausen's first year as a starter, and he turned out ok.
OklahomaIrish
Purdue stacked the box all day and we had to throw. This is still a toddler of an offense. Heck, we are just now adding those plays you guys are talking about. Of course we will have some surprises and I agree with Hawaii that one of them should be Chris Brown down town.
