WR screens

What is going on that after 3 years ND still can't seem to get the timing right on a WR screen?

TJ had two that went for 7-10 yards, but they looked terribly awkward doing it. I see this play all over college football and plenty of times, the WR gets his block and has room to run.

Every time ND runs it, it seems the WR is making a man miss as soon as he catches it, then has to weave his way through traffic just to make 8 yards.

It would appear that is going to be a big part of the playbook this year. I'd like to see some more development in that play.

I thought TJ looked quick, handled the screen well.

Agreed this should be a staple with Neal, Toma, TJ, etc...just glad to see the pass move past the line of scrimmage...we're getting there, slowly..

TJ looked fine, the play just looks awkward when they run it. But you are right, 8 is better than 2.

Speaking of TJ, he had a quiet game. Was he being held back as part of the training wheels approach to the new QB or will his playing time be limited this year?

I keep telling people that this was a very simple offense and very small portion of the offense. The gameplan was working, why change it up? Golson only had like 1 mid-range pass, everything else was very simple.

As for the topic of the thread, I thought the screens to TJ were fine, but Golson had a RB swing pass that he missed by quite a bit. I dont know who was at fault, but it was no where close to Riddick. Of course, I think the very next play, they do the same play on the other side and Riddick goes for like 12 yards.

Anyone else notice how vocal Theo was with EG on that? Like seeing all the communication...don't remember much of that last year.

If I recall, I think EG ROCKETED it just in front of Theo, instead of lobbing it out to him. At least it was a forward pass for EG, though. Not behind the player like Tommy used to do.

I did see that, but I saw Golson being the vocal one. I don't remember who spoke first, but Golson was gesturing to Theo saying like, take off down field instead of running such a flat route.

Yeah, we haven't mentioned TJ and he looked really good. That one missed screen had to be on Golson it was so far off, but he settled down immediately. I like the tunnel screen we ran to Riddick in the spring game. He comes back towards Golson and then the blockers have a wall set up and a tunnel for him to run through. Very effective play.

We need to do the old middle screen that Holtz devised for Rocket. With Devonte Neal that could be fun. Maybe Chris Brown.

Kelly loves screens and he has a plethora of weapons at his disposal for them with this team. Loved what TJ did on his screens. Looked decisive, quick, and shifty. Think Davonte Neal will get his share soon also. They, apparently, really liked the reverse to Neal as they ran it twice in a half. Probably my biggest complaint with playcalling but that's being pretty picky.

I totally disagree. Golson threw it forward for two reasons. There was no defender there so the back as well get started downfield and, two, we are focused on no turnovers and throwing backwards is a turnover waiting to happen.

I was actually impressed by Golson on this incomplete pass. Throw it where it should go and tell the back to go get it like he did on the next play. Golson threw it to the same spot (1 or 2 yards forward pass) and Riddick went and got it.

I agree. I'm pretty positive that I saw the offense run the exact same play numerous times. There was a pass down the sideline to Daniels when the commentators said it looked as if he slowed up on the route. The very next play he caught it for a big gain down the sideline. Looked like the same play. That's just one play from my observation and I'm sure there were more. I haven't had a chance to rewatch the game yet.

Very vanilla in my opinion.
