Safe to say ND is almost back

This is a serious post. I think we can say that ND is almost back. How do I know this?

There is as much discussion as to what ND did wrong as to what they did right after a 40 point win.

I don't mean that as a shot to anyone saying ND did things wrong. Certainly they did and certainly they should be discussed.. I mean that to say that ND is slowly getting to the point where a 40 point win is responded to with, "meh, who's next?"

That is certainly a sign that things are turning around, 4 years ago, ND would have burned down the stadium after a 40 point win, now we are more concerned with the DB's improving.

Certainly a good problem to have.

While the 2012 Fighting Irish have some holes, I 100% agree that the program is heading in the right direction. Kelly is building this team the right way.

Damn Cory. You beat me to my post. I was thinking about the same this after rewatching the game today.

The way Kelly is continually recruiting top players on the o-line and defensive front 7 makes me confident we will keep climbing the cfb ladder. The way SEC teams dominate every year is by manhandling opponents at the line of scrimmage and Kelly has adjusted his recruiting to fit that model. I love the players he has gotten for us already and with a solid season we can keep the incoming class together which could absolutely put us over the top.

Kelly will lead us back to BCS contention, he has my vote.

I have to disagree. Until we win 10 games, win a BCS bowl game, and end the season in the top 10, we are not close to being "back". I do believe we are heading that way but there's a LOT of work to be done. Golson has to establish himself as a top QB in passing and rushing. Our secondary has to be good and our receivers still have to prove themselves.

I guess i have a small problem Cory with the "almost back"---:-?

Personally i cannot join in the almost back mode even though i more then appreciate the thinking that points that way.

I really like this team.

I really like our depth

I really like a new found speed

I think we have a gem of a QB and talent behind him

I love Coach Harry's OLINE and how we have all sophs at #2 and a frosh class of 6 more--just looking like a powerhouse there.

I love our backs

I love our defense front 7 & world class TEs

I see two weak spots --aside from kicking which is still up for review--

Average WRs with young depth that is FAR ABOVE average albeit inexpereinced--but will take some time to fully kick in.

A secondary that has fallen through the cracks--much of that beyond the coaches control---DARBY ( starting at FSU)--TEE( turned into something nobody expected--WOOD ( injured)--Yuri wright-- ( a twitter blabbermouth) etc etc

So yes we have a clear weakness amidst an ABUNDANCE of strength.

So whats my problem with "almost back"??

I just can't go down that road---we are either "trying to get back" or we are back ---almost back sounds like a 15 year mantra----

MY HOPE IS WE MAKE ENOUGH NOISE THIS SEASON ----

THAT WHEN YOU LOOK AT OUR RECRUITING CLASS ADDED TO THE DEPTH & YOUTH OF WHAT WE HAVE NOW___

BY DECEMBER I WANT TO HERE___" WE ARE BACK"

aloha's go irish!

Sure, but that is why I said almost. Certainly there is work to be done.

However, ND ran a vanilla offense, played their starters 2.5 quarters and rolled up 500 yards and 50 points.

Even with his prolific offenses, Weis never scored 50 and never beat a team by 40. The last time I can find ND beat a team by 40 was in 2003 vs. Stanford when the won 57-7.

Now ND has scored 50 points three times in two seasons and has two 40 point wins.

Again, ND is not back yet, but the fact that this board is "meh" to something that hasn't happened since 2003 is pretty promising.

There's certainly reasons to be hopeful, but I think you hit the nail on the head. This team has only beaten an inferior Navy team, that proves nothing at the moment. I think it starts a nice mentality and everyone can put last years woes behind them, but until we put a beat down on Michigan like Bama just did we're nowhere near back.

Some of us must be typing in Greek apparently. There is a difference between being realistic and showing tempered enthusiasm than being a know-it-all Debbie Downer. Guess which one Speedy happens to be...

And for the record, well said Speedy.

This is true, but let's not forget that for 3 quarters last year, ND did put a pretty good beating on a Michigan team that was better than the one Alabama played last night.

Put that AJ McCarron on ND last year and you'd have seen a very similar result.

Now, I am not suggesting that ND is on the same level as Alabama, but I do think they are closer than many think.

Should have been in the chat @ Half-time. We had plenty of D Bags complaining about the team. Wasn't it 27-3 at half time?

In one very real sense we are "almost back".

With the talent , depth , & youth we have on this team---coupled with the lights out recruiting class being built---

We are only one strong season away from not "almost back" but back all the way.

There are 12 opponents awaiting us----If the team is good enough to win 9 out of those 12---we will be a 10 win team--with a top 5 recruiting class , and loaded with returning talent & experience.

9 out of 12---that will nearly guarantee us ANOTHER top recruiting class for 2014 and we are simply off to the races.----

Almost back---one season away---9 wins away---its not some remote possibility, it just needs the 2012 team to be good enough to achieve it.
