jarious
Will keep a running thread here on freshmen who see the field. As Hawaii noted elsewhere, nine freshmen saw the field against Navy (compared to 7 in last season's opener). For perspective, last season, it was about week 5 when BK stopped bringing in frosh. Week 1 [Navy]: Russell, Ferguson, Day, Shumate, Stanley, Brown, Okwara, Baratti, Neal. Week 2 [Purdue]: Played in 2012 (9) CB Keivarie Russell WR Justin Ferguson DE Sheldon Day CB Elijah Shumate OT Ronnie Stanley WR Chris Brown LB Romeo Okwara S Nick Baratti WR Davonte Neal Has Not Played in 2012 (7) Kiel, J.Jones, Mahone, Harrell, Prosise, Turner, Daly Unavailable/Injured (0)

Those look like the prime candidates from last year's class to redshirt.
jbrown_9999
Anyone see an explanation for why Ronnie Stanley played? I thought the plan was to try to play him only if needed. irishtriplets
Have to admit, I was a little surprised to see Okwara on the field. While the reviews have been positive from the get go, I sure thought he was a redshirt/save-a-year candidate.

Okwara is basically the back up at olb and has really surprised, especially in his pass drops. He is an ideal dog. Stanley surprised me, but how many freshmen are 304 and as athletic as him. Now I want him to get more and more reps. I love this freshman class.

OklahomaIrish
I love ya Okie, but no he isnt... he is the ideal CAT. Jaylon Smith is an ideal DOG Dogs~Cats, Apples~Oranges, you say tomato I say NDhoosier, I believe he is a Dog because of his pass drops and the fact that Danny Spond was injured. Gonna go check the depth chart!
OklahomaIrish
Just checked the depth chart and Okwara is our second team dog backer behind Councell. Ishaq and Shembo are the Cats. So are you saying Okwara is actually better suited for the Cat (attack) position?? We have trouble finding good dogs because of the complexity and the range needed to do pass drops. I am excited about Councell and Okwara and I think Okwara stays a Dog. Now when Jaylon Smith comes on board I don't know what is going to happen. Man what a nice problem. edited to show: speaking of dogs. I had to bury my dog Dominic in the Notre Dame garden in front of the house. He made it through 13 football seasons. He got all excited when we scored and as we were high fiving he would bark and occasionally bite somebody. smaster
Considering Okwara is a future Dlineman (I think) and therefore more inclined to rush the QB, I'm siding with Hoosier here. And for the record, Jaylon Smith is the ideal EVERYTHING -- dog, cat, will, mike, let's even try QB for kicks. I really wonder how they will handle his talents over the next few years. With the talent we are assemblying I think DE would be great for Okwara in the future, but he is 239 right now so I don't see it for at least a couple years and he is going to play soon. jarious
Anyone see an explanation for why Ronnie Stanley played? I thought the plan was to try to play him only if needed. No official explanation, but given the fact that he is in the two-deep (albeit, not the next tackle in) and given Nichols history of injuries, you have to figure that BK is covering his bets and getting the kid some experience now. Not ideal, of course. agree with Colin ~ this may be it for frosh. Figured it would be Prosise before Baratti, but that's why they play. BlackIrish42
Going to be hard to keep Jarron off of the field. Not unless a lot of guys get hurt. Hounsell, Day, Schwenke, Springmann are all ahead of JJ...

NDhoosier
speaking of Amir, hopefully we get an update on him on whether he can play against Purdue. Last week, Kelly was optimistic that he could play against Purdue. I think Jones should have a redshirt year to be honest... But just so you guys are aware, Day didnt play in cleanup duty, he was playing in the 1st Qtr. I believe. He is officially in the rotation on the front line already. I truly believe that KLM and Day will split reps 50/50.....Nix Day and Tuitt on our line makes it completely stationary...no way your moving those three back...I dont care what college OL you have, that's some serious mass to move

Him and Nix lined up together is going to be downright disheartening for opposing team's running games. Mix those two in with Tuitt and we have an SEC quality D line next year and the year after. Now these guys are in the building stages and aren't quite as athletic as Day and Tuitt, but they are going to be a brick wall against the run~~in time. Springman's development was retarded by an injury and I expect him to start shining in spring camp next year. Jones is on a strict diet and weight training and should be about 305 - 310 next year. He needs a lot of coaching but he'll get it. Springman gets down pretty darn good for a guy 6' 6''. Keep em coming in recruiting. We loaded up on the O line so far and one real stud on the D line. Would like at least one more on the D line.
