They will be immpressed by a second or third tier guy. I do know if first tier guys will come to Notre Dame

Well, you can pull Urban from that list now.

Top Tier: Successful HC's in College or NFL, preference to college.

Urban

Stoops

Dungy

Cowher

Gruden

Butch Davis

Tubberville

Lower Tier: No Big time HC experience.

Kelly

Patterson

Peterson

Other up and comers.

Strikeout:

Co'ords and other guys with no HC experience.

I would love Charlie Strong but do not see it happening. I would also love Urban Meyer and Bob Stoops, but that won't happen either. Therefore, we will strike out on any of the high quality coaches and Charlie will be back in 2010.

Based on what? Did he say something just now or are you inferring that from his coachspeak yesterday?

I don't know whether or not there has been a chance that UM would consider the ND job this time around, but if there was a chance, nothing he said yesterday positively eliminated it IMO. What else could he say at this point in time even if, hypothetically, he was extremely interested in the job?

This Butch Davis obsession is shockign to me. Why he would be a better candidate than Patterson or Kelly is retarded to me. Tubberville? That's blahhh too. He's basically Davie.

And I don't want an NFL guy. That's the last thing we need, to be the retirement job for a Dungy or Cowler. Stay on TV or become greeters at Walmart.

Butch Davis is 58 & Tommy Tuberville is 55 - as far as I'm concerned, I'd much prefer a new HC that hasn't flipped 50 yet, and with a little more gas in the tank.

I cannot believe some of you are dismissing Meyer as a candidate due to his one sentence response yesterday. Any coach we have offered who is currently employed, especially by a team who is BCS eligible, is not going to claim interest in this job or be willing to discuss the situation. Weis hasn't been fired (publicly). I am sure that, even if the candidates didn't have a problem discussing interest, ND has asked them not to fan the flames since Weis is still technically employed.

Peruse the gator boards when you get a chance. Their posts are cautiously optimistic at best. One of their senior posters (10K+ posts) claimed to have had a 10 minute discussion with Urban's wife where she went on and on about how great it is to be in Florida and how she can't imagine how anyone would think they'd be interested in leaving. Give me a break. You think a coach who is so mum about the situation and being considered for probably one of the most lucrative contracts in the history of college football is not going to tell his wife not to discuss it with fans in a grocery store??? It's "stay positive" banter based on no more information than all of us have had at our disposal. Even the gator fans reference Urban's remarks when he left BG and Utah where he lied through his teeth when discussing his offers. Lord knows if I was in his position, I'd cringe every time a reporter asked me about it. If he decides not to coach here, I promise it will be a decision he makes with a heavy heart.

Does this apply to women as well?

The "some of you" part?

you are like a boyfriend that can't take no for an answer. his final words were, "i want to make that clear"..................

Umm.. seriously? You don't understand why Butch Davis would be a better candidate than those guys? Let's see... he has built the best team in recent memory and did it at a time when Miami was coming off probation. He took over a UNC team that was 27-45 the 6 years before he got there and will always be the 2nd most important sport at the school. This year (his 3rd) they are 8-3 with wins over Miami and Va Tech. How much more would the guy have to do to prove he's good?

the fact that they were coming off probation means that they were a sleeping giant right smack in the middle of the biggest talent pool in the country. uncle fester, who is a bad coach and was eventually fired, took over for him and won a NC while davis was getting his shit kicked in the NFL. So his only real accomplishment was recruiting extremely well at a school that's very easy to recruit for. Are you suggesting he'll be able to recruit the guys he got at miami at ND? If not, I don't see what he would bring to the table or why he'd be a serious candidate.

8-3 in the ACC these days is impressive? What Patterson has done at TCU shits on Davis's recent record and im not even suggesting we target Patterson. I think he should be our 4th/5th choice. Davis should continue to coach UNC to 8-4 years until UNC eventually forgets who they are and decides they need better than that and fire him.

Well, if those words confirm it for you, you should go back and read how "clear" he was about not going to UF.....

echo--- i feel for your disappointment--- i think you reflect a larger sentiment that has been clear on the board over the last two weeks-------there are many who MISTAKENLY believed for most of this season , and actually farther back then that-- that charlie was standing in the way of getting the "GREAT UM"---its an agenda that has been present for quite awhile , based on the premise that when charlie finally screws up bad enough to get fired-- URBAN would fly in aboard the ND jet to RESCUE US from football purgatory!-----------This was based on several factors 1)--- that urban ALMOST WAS HIRED BEFORE--2) that urban stated in his book that ND was still his dream job--3) that urban , named after a pope couldnt really resist the possibility of saving god's football program

i suppose it made some sense -- but it was always a little naive to think he would leave that florida set up to struggle here--- it was over for him and ND 5 years ago-- and yet many have kept that PORCHLIGHT BURNING all this long time--

for them i do feel sympathy--- its like they lost something they had vested an enormous amount of emotion and hope in---- sorta the way i felt when this season went SO SHOCKINGLY SOUTH!-----it may be hard to say goodbye it was for me too----but if you cling too deeply to the URBAN MEYER FANTASY -- there is some risk you transfer your disappointment to whomever the next coach is----- no point in starting off wishing it was urban and not this GUY -- GUY X CAN"T CARRY URBANS JOCK STRAP SO IM DOWN ON HIM--------

my recommendation-- just let urbie go and try and find the best spin to put on the next guy we hire-- afterall we will be stuck with him for another several years-- and starting off disappointed, wow thats not what you want-------- be hopeful for a coach that REALLY WANTS US____------ aloha go irish
