Unbelievable mess

Recommended Posts

Everything just seems to be melting down. Whatever happened dosen't matter. Recruits are going to look us and say we are disfunctional. This kind of stuff hurts the whole program. For Charlie to say what he said about his son not going there, and now this puts the icing on the cake. It hurts with coaching prospects also. I have never been to SB, but am a lifelong fan at 40 years old. My dream was to watch them play as I had never seen them in person. I went to the Navy game in Annapolis last year with my 13 year old son who is a Irish fan also. I told him when we left that before he graduatd high school we were going to South Bend once. He said dad, it's going to be just like Rudy's dad when you get to the stadium. "This the best sight these eyes have seen". We talked about doing the 12 hour ride to South Bend by car and making a road trip of it. Doing some bonding, talking ND football before he leaves to go to college. This mess is really putting a damper on things. South Bend is starting to get a bad rap, not what I would expect.

4 games ago in San Antonio we destroyed WSU, had a great time...things were looking up to a BCS bowl...3 games later we have spiraled into this hole we seemingly can't get out of...

wow, how quick things change.

Swarbrick has to make the move immediately after Sunday. I can only imagine the s.hit opposing recruiters are saying to our committed guys right now...

I have a feeling Stanford is absolutely going to destroy us...Harbaugh will go for the jugular.

Correct, I don't know South Bend. Just ND football. Sometimes it's better not to pursue a dream, they tend not to meet expectations alot of the time. I probably will attempt it anyway. My son would never forgive me if we don't don't make the trip.

It will meet your expectations. My father took me to see the Irish in Philly every year against Navy. When he was in his seventies I took him, my son who was about 7 and my daughter who was 11 to SB. Stayed in town, got to walk around Campus the day b4 game day and visit the sites, met Dick Vitale at the hotel. We still talk about that as 1 of our best experiences.

It was talked about enough that my wife said "when do I get to go?". So this year I got her to the USC game and spent Saturday morning touring campus. It doesn't get any better than a day at ND with those you care about.

My trip is just as long as yours as I drove in from Delaware.

JUST DO IT !!!

If you don't make that trip, you'll never forgive yourself. Go, you will not regret it. I would advise that you stay about an hour outside of town as the hotels are outrageous at $200+ a night with a minimum 2 night stay. You can stay in Goshen, 40 miles away for $60 a night. Just an FYI.

Dont worry. This stuff will all blow over in about a week or two. A new coach will be announced and an exciting buzz will surround the team once again. We'll probably even pick up a few new recruits. Notice how Prater is sort of on hold, waiting to see what happens next.

South Bend is a city just like any other city. There are places to be avoided and there are places that are fine. Jimmy getting punched is just a bizarre occurence by some white trash townie presumably but it's not an indictment of the entire town or a sign that ND is going down the toilet. On the contrary, the school as a whole is doing as well as it ever has academically and as soon as Stoops/Kelly gets on campus the team will be fine.

I have taken my family a lot over the past 4 years since it is a 3 hour drive to ND. My kids always get everyone jacked up going in the stadium by skipping and yelling Let's Go Irish. They will do it over a mile and a half into the stadium. They are 4 and 6. We didn't go to the last 3 games because of things that came up but....Sunday we were walking in to Dick's Sporting Goods and my 4 year old daughter starting skipping and chanting Let's Go Irish! The 6 year old joined in and before they hit the door a few people in the parking lot were chanting with them. We're not dead. Just wounded!

Hey man you should definitely go. My dad and I went for the first time back in 98 and all ND fans should go to campus at least once. I have driven to South Bend 3 times from south Mississippi, but never been to a game... Crazy I know..

South Bend is generally a deteriorating hell hole with a few exceptions. Bad schools, high crime, high taxes, bad government. It is competing with Gary in nearly every respect. Notre Dame campus on the other hand is an island of sanity surrounded by a sea of insanity and liberalism. There is nothing comparable to going to watch a game. Electric and pure excitement. Don't miss the opportunity to take your son there Irish 9.

Okay, it's not nearly that bad. We've got our idiots like every town, but this is over the top.

Back a few years ago when I had kids at home, I requested a copy of the then ISTEP scores from Indy. They sent me a report which was three telephone books thick of every single school sytem in the state of Indiana and how every school and district did on the ISTEP. South Bend was in the bottom 3 in terms of academic performance at nearly all levels, second only to Gary. Yes there are exceptions. Penn district, just outside of South Bend was one of the top in the state but the SBCSC sucks overall. Couple that with rising crime and South Bend is becoming Gary Jr. When you look at many of the neighborhoods that were once great places to live, they have become like slums. When I grew up in SB for just one example, River Park was a great area. From reports I get from people in SB, that place has changed drastically for the worse. There are others as well. I wouldn't want to raise my children in SB when formerly it had a much bettter school system and reputation. SB is one of the worst places in Indiana to raise a family in my view. And they just voted last year to raise taxes in the middle of a recession. Stupid is as stupid does.

All IMHO.

South Bend Indiana is a terrible, terrible place to live. Notre Dame Indiana is one of the most magical places in the world. Trust me, Notre Dame IS an island within the South Bend community. Its like a world apart. Don't let SB deter you from visiting though. Like someone said, there are areas to be avoided and very nice areas as well.

Now time for my South Bend diatribe...

South Bend must be one of the mort unfortunate cities in the United States. They continually bite the hand that feeds them so to speak. Cops are corrupt beyond corrupt (sorry Speedster, I know this is a generalization and you're probably legit). I've had friends ticketed for outrageous incidents such as "noise" violations, "drunk" in public (isn't everyone leaving a bar drunk in public?) and randomly selected from groups of students waiting for cabs only to be arrested. Also my friend was taken to prison, while he was waiting for a cab, drunk yes but not outrageously drunk, the cops took ~$100 in cash which they denied, refused to let him take his anxiety medicine and then held him without charging him for a crime while his dad was there to post bail. It's honestly a f'ing joke. Now in these instances, these kids probably had just cause to be ticketed in the letter of the law. But its hard for us as students to not be outraged when we get noise violations while our friends are being mugged, girls can't walk home even in groups without a male escort for fear of attack, friends are being abducted, held hostage in the trunk of their own car and driven around to SB banks so they could get money out of ATMs, and in my house/first semester alone we had 22 incidences of robbery ranging from loose change in our cars, broken car windows for textbooks (and in some cases nothing) and forced entry for laptops. So anyone who tries to tell me that South Bend "isn't that bad" is honestly out of their minds.

Hey Rockne...come out to the Northeast of town, everything is really nice out there.

South of town is nice too. West of the airport is developing as a nice area also.

I know there are a few nice places in SB. But I wouldn't live there and neither would my family unless it was in an armed, patrolled and gated community. ;-)

Scathing review by someone who spends all of their time within 12 blocks from campus. Biting the hand that feeds? As in SB should kiss ND's ass? It's that arrogance that gets your ass kicked by the locals. See how this goes full circle? SB is no different than any other city in this country dude....trust me, i tend to travel a lot. There are really good parts and there are really bad parts. Problem is it's a small city so you don't have to walk far to reach the crap.

As for your ridiculous assertion about the entire police force being corrupt, you sound like someone that is bitter from an incident or string of incidents. Ever wonder how you happen to be involved in a rash of incidents? I have friends at ND that have never once had an altercation with cops and they go out Thurs through Sunday. I tell you what, go to USC and live off campus in compton and tell me how that compares to SB then get back to me.

I'm just saying you have a big opinion based on a small sample. It is unfortunate that the area south of campus is a run down shit hole. It's been like that for 25 years. ND is spending huge amounts of money to try and correct the problem. As a tax payer...no we are not on the hook to ensure that you can crawl from party to party safely.

Where are you from? Just trying to gauge your expectation level from the area you live.
