As you read about all the reasons why things have gone wrong and what needs to be changed there is one thing that comes to mind that hasn't been mentioned or discussed. Every player loves to win thats what the game is all about and we have a lot of players that love to win. The one thing we are missing is a sound nucleus of players who hate to lose. Guys that hate to lose have the true fire in their belly they will fight and scratch for every inch they would rather die then on the field then lose. They will find a way to beat the other guy, they take losing personally and it starts with there personal battle on the field.

Lou Holtz had a knack for finding those types of player and when you have a good nucleus of them its contagious. Guys like Chris Zorich, Ned Bolcar, Tony Rice, Ricky Waters, Stonebreake, Frank Stamms, Andy Heck, Jeff Faine, Tim Grunhard, Marc Edwards

We have a few of these guys but not enough of them.

Besides Jimmy and Golden who are those gus on our roster?

Brian Smith and Manti Te'o.

Let's not forget Floyd, AA, Hughes........these kids want the ball to make a play to help the team win.

Brian Smith and Manti Te'o.

What exactly has Brian Smith shown you to prove that he hates losing? If Brian Smith tackled as well as he barked at the other team he'd be an all american.

lET'S FACE IT Notre dame isn't for everyone, we get some of the smartest young kids in the nation who happen to want an education first, play a little football second , times have changed , we no longer get the big players we use to get . all the other schools now go after the junior college kids, ask your self with few exceptions why are they in Jr college in the first place ? and some that play football and education is secondary, , we don't have many players in the NFL, because most of them are holding meaningful positions in society, just look at SC Miami, Georgia and a few others , i Will stay with the cream of the crop, ed u ma cation first, football second , keep Charlie. go Irish :grin:;)

I haven't seen the list in a few months, but Notre Dame has the 5th or 6th most players currently in the NFL, or close to that. I will try to find the number.

I think his demeanor after the two recent losses were enough to convince me the kid doesn't take kindly to losing.

Yeah, his tackling has been poor, but so has nearly every other player that plays on Defense this season.

I agree with this. You can bark at another team when your defense is good. Ours isn't, and he looks like an idiot every time he's out there yapping.

Is the thread about players that appear to hate to lose or about players who are horrendous shit-talkers?

If you're going to be hard on Brian Smith for talking garbage then you should be hard on Golden Tate for his hands-at-his-waist, head shaking, "get off of me" stance he assumes every time he makes a big play. Last I checked the team was 6-4 and not playing very well.

he'd be plenty good if someone would teach these kids some fundamentals. they have some raw talent, but that is what it is, RAW.............

ahh but thats the rub, golden tate is making big plays. he has earned his shit talking rights and he backs it up game after game. I would agree that Jimmy, Floyd and Golden hate to lose based on the fact that they raise their level of play in order to avoid defeat.

Can't argue that.

Thing is, he's making big plays for a bad football team. Yeah, look at you Golden, you're awesome. Too bad your team blows.

I think this team is far from being a team that blows. Disappointing? yes. Fatally flawed? yes. But the team is a good, above average team with an excellent potentially top 10 offense (save for redzone). That is why this team is so frustrating I think. Everyone can see that the offense is a top 10, once every so often type unit (despite many of its shortcomings) and the defense just couldn't slow down a peewee team for the most part.

Agreed! I don't like hot-dogging regardless of who does it. I'm sick of all of the strutting, trash-talk and taunting. It makes for good show but the cameramen should just ignore it. They do that crap all of the time in the pro's and that's where the college kids get it. They want to be cool. I say put a stop to all of it. It's the worse form of selfish atttention seeking and it's embarassing to watch. Tate does hot-dog too much. Start winning some games and after you make a big play, get back in the huddle and take care of business rather than trying out for the circus.

6-4 at the University of Notre Dame with two of those losses coming to Navy and Pitt is unacceptable. Shameful, actually.

What about a loss to Boise State or TCU or Cincy would those teams be shameful to lose to?.....Navy I will give you although they aren't the Navy of old it is still inexcusable ....pitt on the other hand is a top 10 team. You can't always judge a team on the past.

We wish things were the same as they were when we were on top but reality is they are not. The Boise States, TCU's, Utahs etc....could be considered more of a powerhouse program than ND if you look at the past decade.

Sad yes it is
