some news from Irish Eyes.. just a piece of the article

“I talked to Charlie Weis about two weeks ago, I’ll call him to check in and see what’s he’s doing. He’s doing pretty well. I really haven’t talked to the defensive coaches in awhile, since I was up there for the USC game.”

Since the USC game the Notre Dame staff has hosted two junior days. Each event had a number of big-name recruits in attendance. One name that hasn’t appeared on the visitors list is Ben Martin.

“I’m in basketball so it’s pretty hard for me get out for just for a day during the weekend,” Martin explained. “Our games are on Friday night so I try to relax on the weekends and try to stay home.”

Martin will be spending a weekend on campus in April. Not sure if it is for the BG game or not.

I think I would prefer to hear a possible prospect say ND interests him to the point he would rather loose one day of chilling out to attend an activity at the campus

I think Weis would probably prefer that a recruit doesn't call him Charlie, either. I think Coach would probably be prefered.

Martin keeping tabs on Weis like that is a very good sign, regardless of the informality (Weis can address that later). It's one thing to mention that Notre Dame has offered you; it's quite another for the recruit to be so comfortable with Weis that HE calls HIM to check up. Would you stoke the fires of a coach for a team that you had only marginal interest in? I think this bodes very well for us.

I think its us or OSU and from what ive heard, and take this for what it is worth, word out of his high school is he is Irish, now you never know with these things but I would call him a ND lean right now

There is a guy on the board for II and he is saying that Ben Martin is all but Irish. He said he visits scheduled to OSU, ND and Florida and if nothing changes on those trips than he will be Irish. I don't know the guy so I can't provide any credibility to it but thought you would like to hear it. The poster spoke pretty strongly of his source.

Broke I'll have to take that as good news then.

I'll do the same.

Rick Minter has a decent power base in Cincinnati and knows all of those coaches. He was the head coach at UC. I will be shocked if martin goes anywhere else and with his frame I will be shocked if he doesn't move to the DT position.

... I will be shocked if he doesn't move to the DT position.

He's got the height but at 220 that's a lot of pounds to pack on to play inside or do you envision another 260 pound DT?

Realizing he's a HS junior is it reasonable for him to add 25 pounds through a high school weight program to be at say 245 when arriving as a Div 1 freshman?

That's too light for the inside isn't it? To play DT, he'd have to add 60-80 pounds, wouldn't he? That strikes me as more like two years worth of work under Mendoza to reach a DT playing weight.

He may end up on the inside eventually (upperclassman) but if he's to see the field early in his career wouldn't it be a DE where that wingspan could be used a disrupter in passing situations and he could use his speed to beat less mobile OTs?

I had read on article from one of the recruiting services on Trattou speculating that he might end up on the inside in college. He's slower, 10 pounds heavier and a couple inches closer to the ground ("Keep those pads LOW!). He too would have a bunch of weight to add to get to DT playing weight.
