Now that it looks more than likely that Charlie will not be here next year, what are we looking at recruiting-wise for this class. Current commits likely or possible to decommit? Big recruits still on the board who we will miss out on now? Any other possible effects of Charlie leaving?

 

My thoughts:

Current Class

QB- Andrew Hendrix - Stays,very small chance of leaving

QB- Tommy Rees - Stays, no chance of leaving

 

RB- Giovanni Bernard - 50/50, Gio was another big recruit by Weis

RB/FB- Cameron Roberson - 75/25 Stays, I am a little worried he may be concerned about how he will be used by our next regime.

 

WR- Daniel Smith - Stays, no chance of leaving

WR- Bennett Jackson - Stays, small chance of leaving - Not highly recruited but he is a NJ guy that may leave without Weis at the helm.

WR-Tai-ler Jones - 60/40 Stays, Could be an issue of seeing a better opportunity somewhere else.

 

TE- Alex Welch - Stays, very small chance of leaving.

 

OL- Christian Lombard - 80/20 Stays, been with us since the beginning but who knows how this will affect him.

 

LB - Kendall Moore - Stays, small chance of leaving. Seems like an ND guy with or without Weis.

LB - Prince Shembo - Stays, small chance of leaving. Also seems like an ND guy.

 

DL - CHRIS MARTIN - This is REALLY going to hurt. The crown jewel of this class like Teo was last year may be on his way out. Forget the 95% quote he once made about if Weis was gone. I do not like our chances at all. Gone, very small chance of staying.

DL - Blake Leuders - Stays, small chance of leaving.

DL - Justin Utupo - 75/25 Stays. He likes something about ND considering he committed without visiting....Hopefully it wasn't just Weis.

 

DB - Lo Wood - Stays, very small chance of leaving.

DB - Spencer Boyd - Stays, very small chance of leaving.

DB - Chris Badger - Stays, small chance of leaving.

DB - Toney Hurd Jr. - Stays, small chance of leaving.

 

Recruits still on the Board

WR - Kyle Prater - Very unlikely with Weis gone. Our only hope is if he wants to stay close to home and we pick Cooper.

 

OL - Brandon Linder - I don't see it, but it looks like he will be making a decision soon so we won't have to wait long to find out.

OL - Matt James - Our best shot at a top lineman left on the board. Unfortunately Cincy is really making a lot of noise right now.

OL - James Stone - Perhaps our second best chance at getting another top lineman. I have never been able to get a great handle on him, perhaps somebody else may have some insight.

OL - Seantrel Henderson - Our chances are slim and none and slim might be leaving with Charlie. He has always been on our wishlist but I can't see us reeling him in without some sort of miracle.

OL - Arie Kouandjio - Similar to stone but I think a little less likely to sign up.

 

LB - I don't see any significant chance with any remaining linebackers so I am not going to comment on them individually.

 

DL - Bruce Gaston Jr. - I think he is ours to lose and the lose of Weis will have little effect.

DL - Beau Allen - 50/50 I can't say one way or another.

DL - Ego Ferguson - He is giving us a look so I think a lot will depend on how he gets along with the new coach.....If he doesn't commit somewhere else first.

 

DB - Outside of Corey Cooper who I think we get, read linebackers comment above.

 

ATH - Marquis Flowers - He has just surfaced recently as a possibility and I think it is too early to tell.

ATH - Anthony Barr - I think family pressure will get him here even though he might not be completely sold on us.

 

What do you think? Even optimistically I think we lose a couple. Some more offers might have to go out. Anybody have any names of recruits who were close to getting offers that might now?

I think the majority of this is dictated by when Weis would be fired, who the new coach is, and when that coach is hired.

 

Example, rumor has Martin looking at OU. If Weis is fired, but Bob Stoops becomes coach (pure speculation at this point) does that bring Martin back in? I am sure that would go for any recruit who would leave.

Welcome again to DD corysold. I'm glad your actively posting and interested in recruiting. Per Weis as the AD said anything is not based on coaches and would be after the season. I to see Chris Martin as a risk factor now with even what the AD said.

If Kelly comes here does Matt James still have an interest in Cincy? Would his love of Kelly mix with his love of ND?

The reality is noone will have a clue until a coach is hired. Weis will do his best to help us keep the recruits. If we get a Gruden or Stoops, we'll likely keep this class, plus add defense. If we add a Kelly or Urban type, we may lose recruits and pick up others that will actually fit that system. It depends if we stay in a relative prostyle/dropback offense or if we go to something that requires different personnel. We won't know that until we get a new coach.

You really think Weis will try to get the recruits to stay if he's fired? Can you elaborate on that.

Easy. He's an ND grad like the rest of us. We know what loyalty is. He knows what loyalty is. Trust me, whether fired or not, he cares about the program, because he's one of us.

Agree with wave here that CW will do the right thing. I remember Minter being fired and Harrison Smith thinking twice about committing to ND but Minter convinced him to come. Charlie will do better than that.

rumor from where? havent seen it. i think ppl are just speculating b/c Stanford is doing good and ND isnt right now. Lets not forget one of the big things for TJ was that he could EE at ND and he couldnt at Stanford.

I am with you coach. In the beginning of the thread I said optimistically we lose a couple. I am not sure about 7 but I could see as many as 5. People are REALLY underestimating the effect losing Charlie will have.

 

What is the word on Leuders? I have read several articles that give me the feeling Boyd and Hurd did not come to ND just for Charlie....but who knows these days.

Yeah... None of those guys would want to play for Stoops if he came. Man, that guy's a crappy coach... He probably can't recruit out of his own shadow.
