I'd have McCoy throwing bombs to Shipley all day. 8-)

Haha I was going to say pound the ball with Mark Ingram and let Rolando McClain handle their RB.

You are opening yourself up to negativity by fishing for answers to a vague and ambiguous line of question...

Who is the best college football team in America?

  • Author

Well considering I am a huge fan of THE Notre Dame Fightin' Irish, that would be the team I am talking about. And being that this is a forum for Notre Dame fans, I would assume that everyone else would feel the same way.

Regardless of how they end the year.............two years ago 3-9, to me they were and are the best football team in America.

I'm sorry that you as "fans" don't share that sentiment.

And for the record, I wasn't fishing. I among a few others on this board believe these kids can go into Pitt Saturday and win this game.

I've read post after post after post you guys suggest they should have done this or done that, now, I've put out in front of you, your chance to tell us how you think the game should be run to come out with a win. I was simply looking for your opinions.

If other's around these kids on the the team talk like some of you, it's no damn wonder they can't get up for a game.

If I wanted answers like I got, i'd have gone to a usc or michigan forum.

But, hey, thanks. Appreciate all the in put from such great bandwa........I mean fans, such as yourselves.

When you start a thread like this you're just asking for it...

What do you want us to say? Play some damn defense? Tackle? Score in the redzone? Run the ball effectively? Make our kicks? Play with some damn (smart) emotion?

This question assumes that the scheme is wrong...and some may agree, but it has more to do with players not doing what I mentioned above... If the players aren't doing what they're told, then what good is a gameplan?

I'm not sure a Lou Holtz gameplan would be any more successful...

DJ, does not your post suggest that the problem is not with coaching? PLEASE, I am not picking a fight here or looking to start beef, I just think that every one of your comments bespeaks execution of a plan as opposed to a failure of the plan itself . . . I am NOT an X's and O's guy but one thing is for sure WHEN we get into the red zone (and we certainly will) a fade to the corner better NOT be a play I see at all in that situation . . . I read somewhere that even the waitress at the IHOP knows we run that play in the red zone - THAT is scheming and we better have some other plans for that eventuality or my TV may be at the curb with my boot print all over it.

Not at all Wilhelm. I definitely think our coaching is suspect. Part of coaching is getting your players to play. Execution, passion, and playing to your ability is something a coach has to be able to do. Our's is not. I agree with a lot of the predictable play-calling but I think what I mentioned is more damning. IMO of course...

I tend to agree with you, DJ, when you have that caliber of player you should be able to game plan to meet their strengths AND get them to execute those plays . . .

Avoiding the "best college football team in America" crap, I would gameplan as such. On defense, stuff the run first and foremost. They are a run + play-action team, so I would be content to turn them into a team that throws it 40 times. To stuff the run, play 2 legit DT's (Ian + Hafis/Cwynar) and play Ethan and KLM on the edges. Have the lb's look run first, esp. Teo. If that doesn't stop it, bring a safety up. Until they lean more on the pass, leave the db's in single coverage with safety help over the top (both if possible, 1 if we need 8 in the box.)

Offense, well, there isn't much point in gameplanning here as we know what Weis will do. Throw it 40+ times unless we are winning by a couple td's.

Congrats, cj. You've been hired as our interim DC for this week's showdown with Pitt.

If I'm the current coach and want to keep my job and win the game, here's what I would do:

Go to the hospital and check in but don't tell anyone why.

As I lay in my bed, players come to visit me.

I purposely look sullen, pale, and can barely speak.

I look to my team and say, Now go out there and win one for the Tuna!

Sorry Charlie...........couldn't resist.

Step 1: I would get the players to venerate at the altar of TJ4NDIrish because he is the true and ultimate fan on high who only watches the Irish and claims they are the best team in the nation. He also baits all of the other fans on a message board who have different opinions than his own in order to show how "bandwagon/fairweather/fake" their fanship is. Did you even goto ND TJ? Is this what you wanted to hear?

Step 2: I would let some of the fiery guys give the pep talk, let the team know how they need to start playing for one another, they need to play as brothers, f everyone else. How if someone hits them in the mouth or cheapshots them, they hit them back twice as hard and f'ing bury the man across from him on every single down. Play like football is fun again, stop being robots, stop thinking so much. Also, this is on primetime so don't look like a bunch of p*ssies, stop being the f'ing good guys, break the other team, backs against the walls, come out fighting and don't stop till after the Gator Bowl.

Step 3: To open the game I would have alot of quick drops and some draws/screens in the playcalling to combat their good pass rush. Tell Jimmy he needs to be better at getting the ball out sooner. Dial up some pass plays that have a quick hit safety valve in the tight end or rb. Minimize the amount of plays called that take awhile to develop. Run the ball down their throats in the redzone. Or at least run some rollouts and play action. Then after the first couple drives....wait for it....wait for it....GASP-I would adjust to what the defense is giving me instead of sitting in the postgame press conference telling reporters that I'm not going to change my approach to the game.

Step 4: Let the defense fly around and have some fun. Mix up blitze packages. Play some more bump man, tell the DBs if they get beat in coverage, everyone is going to know that they f'ed up, that the whole world just watched him get burned by that (insert favored derogatory and belittling slur term here) from Pitt. Tell them to form tackle and gang tackle. Break their spirits.

Step 5: Tausch, you're good, you've shown that, foot-ball-uprights. easy, you got this. Maust/Turk, just kick the friggin ball.

Step 6: Bring alot of kleenex so my nose doesnt drip on aforementioned primetime. Try and look like a human being with emotion, not the offensive genius robot man. Tell young charlie to stay at home (sorry just tired of seeing him on the sidelines constantly. this is a personal jealousy thing more than anything else).

Step 7: Win the game. Nod at Pitt. Venerate Teej. Get ready for UConn.

I think the team needs a shake up. I would put Eric Olsen at Nose Tackle. I make Golden Tate play running back in the red zone and also use him at Corner back on defense. I would make EVERY offensive and. Defensive starter play on special teams and I would also consider using Ethan on the O-line. At this point, we really have nothing to lose and we might be surprised. I also think maybe Goodman at QB in the redzone so we have a shot at the QB running it in.

say a novena.........................

No, that's not what I wanted to hear, I wanted some f*&king enthusiasm for this team. Yeah, I'm disappointed for this team just like everyone else. But, hell, just because they aren't ranked 15 or 10 or 9 I'm not going to jump on the bandwagon to fire the coach. In another post with videos clips of Clausen, Olsen and other players, they own up to their mistakes, "it's the players out there not the coach" I believe one of them said.

Who is to say that this is as far as ND will get with CW. Look at Penn State, FSU 30 40 years with the same freaking coach, no matter the record. Make some changes but hell, doesn't have to be the coach. Stop pounding on the kids, be enthusiastic about this f*(king team.

As I said earlier, if others around the players are as doom and gloom as on here, no wonder they can't be energetic for a game.

I absolutely respect other opinions and appreciate their views, maybe they change mine, maybe they don't. What I was simply doing is asking how some of the football guys on here would approach the game against Pitt. Yes, my opinion about this team matters, it may not matter to you, but it does to me. And if you come on and give personal attacks, unwarranted, then yes, I'm going to take it personal.

No, I don't want you to bow down and take on my opinion, but you can bend over and kiss my a$$. Now, what's the worse that's going to happen to me for saying that.......I'll be booted from the forum. But, guess what, there are other forums.
