Any truth to the rumor that he's being considered? I know this is all speculation but I was just wondering if anyone has heard/read anything similar...

I respect the heck out TD, especially after reading his latest book: Un Common.

I sure hope not.

I don't really get this statement, seeing as he built one of the most dominant defenses of the decade with Tampa Bay...

If you're referring to his Indy days, that's more a testament to Bill Polian, who built the team around Manning and really couldn't care how they did defensively.

no..............

Are you kidding? He'd be a tremendous hire.

However, he retired from the Colts because coaching was just too much on a day to day level, and his family has, and will remain in the Tampa, FL area. Meaning, there's no way he could be a father, the one thing he wants to do most, while working in South Bend, IN.

It's just not even a consideration for Dungy, I'm sure.

I'm a Colts fan and believe me, Polian was bringing in the guys that Dungy wanted for his system. Small, fast and--for the most part--soft.

If you like teams gashing you for 5 yards a carry because you've got two 260lb DTs then Tony is your man.

Why would he be a tremendous hire?

People here are complaining about Weis's inability to win the big game, wait until they get a load of Tony.

Then how did he build such a dominant defense in Tampa?

And I think him losing big games was moreso because of the man playing Quarterback, and not the head coach.

I really don't care either way -- I don't think he'll come to ND, and while I wouldn't be against hiring him, he wouldn't be my top choice either.

I can't answer that question, but I'd think it probably had something to do with Warren Sapp, Derrik Brooks and Ronde Barber.

Manning deserves his share of the blame, but a better defense would have netted the Colts at least one other Super Bowl I think.

With the way Tony Dungy relates to the 'modern athlete', something tells me he would have the top recruiting class in the country yearly, and would get the most out of his players. Ive never heard one player who had anything bad to say about the guy.

Right on Dread.

Dungy would be a phenomenal hire. Cant see it happening, but i would love that move.

I have not missed a colts game in about ten years, and you sir are 100% wrong...

Is there really a rumor? I know I threw his name out there, but I threw it out there along with Cowher. I was just saying if we were going to take shots at people, why not take shots at Super Bowl winners... So, if the rumor began with me, there's nothing to do with that. If not, though, I don't know what the word on the street is.

I read it on another site Wave and also heard about it from a friend on campus... Probably nothing to it though... I like his mentioning though.

About what?

The Colts ranked 20th against the run in 2003, 24th in 2004, 16th in 2005, 32nd in 2006, and 15th in 2007.

Oh, and if you think I was incorrect about Polian doing Dungy's bidding on draft day . . .

"[John] Czarnecki, the FOX NFL Sunday editorial consultant, on Wednesday posted his five best and worst NFL draft-day decision makers, ranking Belichick — the Patriots’ head coach and personnel decision-maker — No. 1, with Polian next at No. 2. Polian is entering his 12th draft as the Colts’ president.

Here’s how you know Czar knows what he’s doing. This wasn’t just a list of Polian’s best first-round draft selections. He also noted correctly that Polian altered his draft strategy upon the 2002 hiring of Tony Dungy as the head coach, shifting the team’s focus to Dungy’s preference of speed and quickness on defense. The NFL landscape is littered with also-ran teams with bickering between front offices and coaching staffs, but I remember Polian talking extensively immediately about the process of adapting the Colts’ scouting system to what Dungy was running."

I agree, this guy is a classy coach and would be a legend.

Are you a Colts fan?

I love how Dungy has lived off his reputation as a defensive mastermind when he fielded a Defense in Indianapolis that was just as bad as the one we get to watch every Saturday afternoon.

Well lets look at who Dungy had to work with and where all the Colt's money was spent. I am not a Colts fan, but a Dungy fan. Look at the defense in Tampa Bay..... Additionally, Dungy knows how to be a Head Coach. We aren't hiring him for DC but HC.

Look at who Dungy had to work with? You mean the guys that he got Polian to draft? Or Ron Meeks, the DC he brought in at Indy (he's doing real well in Carolina this year, isn't he?)?

Dungy is a great man, I respect the hell out of him and appreciate what he did for the Colts, but I never had the pleasure of watching one of his defenses do anything more than get manhandled (with the exception of last season and the playoffs in 2006-07).

Oh, and he's a really good one for getting outcoached, too. Look at his playoff record.
