i was thinking danny mccarthy or zeke motta

i can't wait to see what dan mccarthy and motta can do. does anyone have any news on how dan mccarthy is doing.

i'd love to see sergio brown get a shot to start. i've always felt bad that he's remained #2 on the depth chart the kid has all the athletic ability in the world and is a big bundle of energy.

I guess thats good. Hayseed is always out of position and just hasn't played well. Good to see a talented younger guy get a shot. Hell, I wouldn't mind seeing Blanton play some Safety, he hasn't been able to cover, but hes done a pretty solid job of tackling for the most part.

i agree dangeruss on sergio--- i was also entertaining the idea of he and harrison swithching roles--- lets face it-- they have to do something -- harrison needs a long offseason in the weight room-- and the film room---i hope charlie and staff realize this is a must change and not a maybe change!---- aloha go irish

Are you saying Harrison hasn't been coached up, or just isn't very good?

i think it is a case of talent or strength on the tackling irishman---i mean he hits guys head on like they should go flying and instead he gets runover---his technique looks sound tackling they are good hits-- they just dont get the runner down__LOL__on coverage, i cant say what the problem is-- hell its all over what i expected to be a sparkling secondary--harrison seems to be the weakest link-- but far from the only problem-- just not sure playing him last year at LB helped him at all-----so weight room for tackling and for shedding blocks-- he just isnt strong enough and is the easiest secondary player to block-- when his position should make him the hardest!--- thats not good for us-- and for coverage-- you tell me-- last year the secondary seemed right on recievers in good position most of the time--- this year NOT!--- some blend of scheme and coaching i guess--- you tell me and the staff plz!!!--- aloha go irish!

I think our DB's cover scared, partly due to coaching and technique and they play poorly in coverage. Most of the missed tackles are out of position scenerios where they are looking down and reaching. The initial hit may be ok, but the body is not behind the hit. I have said it over and over again. The team plays slow in almost every position on Defense.

The DL doens't help with no pressure so it is a two edged sword. These guys are just not that good. GAry Gray could not be beat at the AA game and practices. He gets injured and this is what we have. #2, forget about him.

You have to have the one Five star DLman from a big time HS program every couple of years. Getting the 4 and or 5 stars from smaller schools, doesn't get it and it is obvious.

everson griffin, trattou, hunter, Austin.

Games are differentiated on the OL and the DL. When it came down to nuts and bolts, the DL got beat up and our OL got punished.

If you think Harrison has been out of position I assure you Sergio is not the answer - this is why he has not won the job - he is one of the best athletes on the team.

so basically we're saying that players are going to compete in practice this week and the best one will start? isn't that the way it always is or should be?

I think that this is spot on. We don't lack athleticism, just coaching and/or instincts. I don't understand how that is the case with Corwin being a former CB and CB coach.

As to the pass rush, I don't think that you can leave these guys on an island with any form of blitzing (at least the way that we blitz). If we are going to blitz, they need to start incorporating some unpredictability in the blitz packages. Everytime we blitz, we seem to telegraph where it is coming from. That makes it much easier to pick up (IMO).

well irishmen you seem to want to throw out the baby with the bath water-- its one thing to be giving jamoris a good shot at harrisons spot-- its another to just throw the entire backfield-- and the DLINE-- out lock stock and barrel!--lol-- i mean-- hunter-austin--trattou-- griffen--- why not throw in gerald mccoy too!----- if you remember we tried hard-- and even got commits from some of these guys-- you cant hold a freakin gun to their head!------we are simply not FLORIDA OR USC and will never be them, thank god-- on the downside of that its very very hard to get alot of these top guys, often from urban areas-- to come and study in sleepy town USA---- i'm sure we will keep trying-- but you have to be realistic about recruiting in the 21st century!

I can't be sure about this, but it seems that when we line up our 4 down, they are tightly grouped with very little spread in the formation. At one point in the game, I noticed that the SC players wer spread wide across the line. It occurs to me that this gave them options in the attack. Much more room to operate and made our O-Line defend more territory. When we blitz, we send our backs right into the pack with no effect. No gaps to shoot.

Just an observation.

Harrison Smith has been a HUGE dissappointment. He seems to whiff more then anybody. Honestly,

he did better at linebacker. I wish he would have stayed there and put on 10 pounds of muscle from

last year.

In the days of Holtz we did not always land the big time defensive tackle......but on many occasions we BUILT them.....Alton Maiden, Renaldo Wynn, Jim Flannagan just to name a few.

We made linebackers out of big safeties and we made defensive linemen out of linebackers.......

another one that comes to mind is CHRIS ZORICH...... Why can't we do this again....

When I first saw Scott Smith I thought he would be a candidate....how about Calabrese????

Do we just not have kids that want to work their tail off like Zorich, or is it coaching?

Charlie landed number of 3-4* DL last year and will clearly be building some guys up. Again this year we have 4 DL committed and are looking for more on the inside it appears.

Hopefully we keep the current commits, add another one or two, and are on our way to developing some big, line clogging, DL's.

How can you think it's overdue when you've never seen Jamoris play?
