...just go ahead and read these stats from last week's game. And yes I'm using last week's game only because it should be a measuring stick for our team...don't really care about how well they played against Nevada or MSU.

DJ, now you know the OL has improved this year....

Β

I think what last week really showed is the lack of a DL. I think the problem that our OL had was very similar to the problem that teams have when they play Navy, and now GT. The biggest proble is that you can't simulate, in this case the USC DL, in practice - much like regular offenses can't simulate the Navy offense. So the first time that our OL say that much speed out of a DL was the game.

Β

Its hard to get OL ready for that speed because our scout team, hell our first team for that matter, can't play at that speed, so the OL aren't prepared for it.

Β

Imagine getting in a batters box and having me throw you batting practice at 40mph for a month straight. Then step into the battersbox in the world series game and have someone throw at you 95 mph - what are your chances of hitting it. - zero.

Β

Its kind of exagerated, but thats what happened to our OL......I'm not trying to make excuses, its just the truth.

Damn - another rabblerouser that thinks Coach Weis has had five years, not the three years commonly attributed to his regime in these parts!:canada:

Actually what stood out to me there was 3.9 yards per carry. Did we really average that on Saturday? If so I say again-why did we abandon the run???? Its not hard to figure out if a team is dropping 7 into coverage there is going to be some space to run the ball.

Β

Like one of my friends said, "when Charlie gets nervous he throws."

Our offense did not lose the game. The defense did. We are a top 10 offense and we continue

to improve after losing Floyd. When the season is over compare the stats to last year and this

team is light years ahead. Tremendous improvement and the offensive line is the main reason. To

think otherwise is ludicrous.

Answering the question "Why did we abandon the run" and "When Charlie gets nervous he throws" are simplifications. If your down 20 points and the clock is running...would you still run which chews the clock up or start throwing? Your best answer is try to get back in the game in the fastest way possible. IMO

AMEN Sir John, you are absolutely correct, and we ran the ball somewhat effectively because

we mix it up. We have a TREMENDOUS offensive mind calling the shots. USC

gave up only 3 touchdowns all year and we score four!!! Think about it.

Jimmy definitely had some reversion in the USC game.

Β

Watching him drop back 1-2-3 then get jumpy and look around rather than make the throw or the throw away was hard to watch.

Β

I can only assume he saw covered receivers and knew enough not to throw, but didnt check down or get rid of it. he didnt trust his protection early in the game, but all in all i think the OL performed quite well.

There is a flaw in your logic. You look at overall last year vs one game this year. Either look at overall or game by game.

Β

In other words, USC this year vs USC last year.

Β

When you look at "improvement" you cannot discredit Nevada or MSU.

I took my notes during the game and the sacks were spread as follows:

Β

Duncan - 3 sacks given up 4 Pressures given up... He was outclassed all day long, and I frankly thought he would have been benched if he didn't step it up midway through the 3rd quarter...

Β

Young - 2 Pressures given up...So for all of the anti-young people on here, please remember when he faced the best Dline in the nation, he held them without a sack, or penalty.

Β

Robinson - 1 sack given up on a missed assignment, not exactly a great day as he was also beaten inside routinely and their defensive tackles were making plays up and down the field.

Β

Ragone - 1 sack given up...why we would put our tight end on Everson Griffen one on one is beyond me...And frankly why we didn't go 2 TE where we could use either of them in the passing game more, was a bit of a surprise to me as well.

Β

As for the other QB pressures... I don't know how they were divided up, but I do know on the final drive that Robinson was beaten inside twice to lead to pressure and incompletions.

Β

I think we all saw the writing on the wall at the beginning of the season, when we acknowledged Duncan as an unproven commodity and that our defensive line didn't have an established pass rusher...So what happened. Those two weaknesses were exposed and led to a loss...

The thing is they literally had four guys rushing and we couldn't stop them. Why was Kyle Rudolf not heard of all game? Because our coaching staff realized what I'm pointing out and left him in for max protect... It was sad to see Jimmy again running for his life that first half (reminiscent of 07) and parts of the second half as well. If we didn't have a world-beater for a QB we probably wouldn't have scored.

Β

I'm not suggesting the offensive line cost us the game because that would be idiotic, but rather that they were not doing their jobs---AGAIN---which forced JC to reach deep in his bag of magic... The OL looked like crap against USC.

You are correct that jimmy was running for his life in the first half, but i honestly think that had more to do with Jimmy's confidence in the pocket than the actual performance of the OL.

Β

SC now has 26 sacks, in 6 games. I would suggest that we held up well considering that the game was in doubt and they didnt call off the dogs, on top of the fact that we pass more than the average team, implying more opportunities to record a sack.

Β

There is a simple reality that even NFL OL's give up sacks to good DL's. Just part of the game, sometimes the DL wins. heck. ND got a couple sacks...

Wasn't USC O line supposed to be ALL world??? So What does that say about the ND front seven? 3 sacks, 8 TFL and held the #22 rushing O to 121 yards about 60 to 70 yards below their average. What I saw watching the game was way too much of our DB's with their backs to the QB chasing the SC WR. If your gunna play the high risk, high reward D you gotta get in the WR's grill every play!!

I think there is definite improvment across the board....The thing with last year's line is we couldn't run on ANYBODY...I give the line a grade C grade during USC...I think Jimmy got flashbacks to last year and got happy feet in the first quarter...but in the second half, he hung in there (while the pocket was closing around him VERY fast) and delivered very accurate, crisp, and clutch passes.

USC's d-line is one of the best in the country, and they play with incredible speed. Expecting our line to completely dominate them is just stupid.

Β

Β

I would have been happy with blocking them.....

Β

Our guys play slow. They don't move off the ball. FuSC DL was in their face when the ball hit Clausens hands.

Β

Only the idiot penalties and Clausen playing like he did kept us even close.

Β

Our Lines can't get out of each others way, let alone take care of a guy like Griffen...

Β

I understand when you're down 20 points you're not in a position to run.

Β

My point is we ran the wildcat once or twice with great success and never went back to it. As the NDN poster pointed out we averaged 3.9 yards per carry. I just think we went away from it too early in the first half and third quarter.

Β

Furthermore, again when they are only rushing 3 or 4, and/or spreading the DL across the line then it makes for better xs and os rushing attack. I just feel we didn't exploit that the same way we didn't exploit it the 2nd half at North Carolina last year when they made the same adjustment.
