For a SoCal graduate, he's no homer...

  • 1 month later...

I actually kinda like Pat Haden, even for an SC grad.

I agree, they are the worst. They never get anything right, I sit there like WTF u talkin bout? I swear I could do their jobs easy.

I can't stand them. I want someone who will be excited about ND winning. Tony Roberts sounded as if he was out of his seat when calling a Tim Brown or Rocket TD return. These guys have no emotional attachment to ND. I think ND fans deserve better. Can we organisze something to tell NBC we want someone who is actually a ND fan. I want soemone who the opposing fans bitch that he is too pro ND or even too biased. I sometimes get the feeling these guys are taking great pleasure in ND demise. Every time someone would make a good play against ND, Haden would be gushing about him. He made the QB from Navy out to be an AA.

Are we talking about just the NBC announcers because they are the worst! But if other networks are in this as well, we do have Lou Holtz and no can say he isn't pro ND.

I like Tom Hammond, he has a solid voice for play by play. Haden is decent, fair, and extremely intelligent (lawyer, Rhodes Scholar). But I want to see Theisman up in the booth. I personally think he is a great announcer and a perfect fit being a Notre Dame guy, I don't care if he would be biased.

Yeah that would be a nice fit...

Could you imagine if Lou was in the box? That would be awesome. Ha totally biased even if we were losing by 100... Good ol' Lou

You know everyone always brings that up when we want to put one of our own in the press box, but I say who cares if he's biased.

Numerous teams use their own announcers that are biased. You should hear Sun Sports down here in Florida call their games. Total Bias. But mainly you see it in the professional ranks. I will use one example:

Ken "the Hawk" Harrelson, he calls the White Sox game. I believe that he is very biased, but still has the ability to call a great game.

I think Haden does a great job. Full disclosure: I've met him and got to know him a little. If you did, you'd like him. He's a good man. He also calls a fair and balanced game for ND. I've never understood the lemming-like criticism of him. I think it's more about being in the group than about legitimate criticism.

Β

Hammond is another case I think. I don't know his motives and would not try to impute any to him, but he seems to go out of his way to favor ND's opponent. Maybe he, or the producers, thinks there has to be some sort of devil's advocate in the booth. We see that kind of stuff in more gross fashion in the manufactured "controversy" involving Mark May and Lou.

Β

Bottom line: none of these commentators should be taken seriously.

You don't get it. Many people are watching ND game on national tv because THEY HATE ND. Very few people are watching Florida games, or any other team's games, solely or primarily because they hate that teim and want to see it fail. Those that hate a school like Florida are fans of one of its rivals. Negativity for a team like Florida is strictly rival-based. The ND haters are much more broadly distributed throughout the nation. I don't think the ND hatred is primarily based on religious bigotry anymore, although some of it no doubt is. I think it's mostly about resentment/envy over ND's special status in college football. These negative feelings are only exacerbated because that status has not materially deteriorated in proportion to the deterioration in quality of our football program.

Β

That's why NBC can't have raging homers in the ND broadcast booth. That will completely turn off a significant minority of its regular ND viewers----the ND haters. It's all about audience demographics.

I've also met Haden a few times and have had a chance to speak with him at length.

He's a great guy and I've never had a problem with his work in the booth.

I think more people have a problem with Hammond and somehow lump the two together.

No, our defense did that.

I believe this is the second instance in which you have shown your feelings for the haters. What is your obsession with courting them? And by the way they would still watch, if they did not they would not be able to exercise their hate the way that they love to do. It is the same reason that you see the haters on ND message boards and in the press. Granted, it would give them another reason to hate Notre Dame, but frankly, I do not care. There is a fascination with Notre Dame Football that transcends the person in the broadcast booth, homer or not.
